My wife and I finally made it back to Colorado in October to stay at the McMahans home. We missed most of the golden Aspens, but there were beautiful trees left for pictures and heck even the dead trees are beautiful in Colorado! :-) We arrived at the home and and just sat in the car for a few minutes in awe of the peaceful surroundings. What a beautiful home with the wind whispering throught the trees and there were deer in the yard next door, I guess we didn't bother them they looked up and went back to eating. After checking out the house, everything was as stated and yes the photos shown on this site are real, we went back outside to sit on the porch thinking we ARE in God's country. As stated in all the other reviews the home is perfect in regards to everything we needed for cooking, cleaning and just lounging around. We used the wood stove each evening to heat the house it was warm through out the night for us . The deer where right at the window in the morning and didn't spook when I opened the door, There are walking areas just about anywhere you want to go in Estes Park and any other areas including the RMNP. The home is minutes to Estes and the food is great everywhere no matter what you eat with plenty of shops with just about anything you could want. There were abundance of elk just lying around in town grazing and people watching, it was amazing to see them so close. We had a great time although it was short, but very relaxing, enjoyable and the McMahans really have a gold mine here for all of us vacationers to enjoy.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at WilderNest from the fresh baked bread to the visting wildlife and close proximity to Estes Park and RMNP - it was a great choice. This was our second time traveling with our young toddler and this property was just right for her. She spent hours looking for rabbits, squirrels and birds in the front yard and loved watching the deer from the kitchen window in the evening. We also loved how close and yet secluded the property was to downtown Estes. It was very convenient for going to the grocery store and eating out, but having a relaxing place to come back to for some down time. The hummingbirds were awesome! The property is very clean and the owners are fantastic people to deal with! With the Colorado wildfire situation, we had many questions and concerns and they were very informative and responsive, helping us to better understand the situation and get the most out of our enjoyable vacation. I am not someone who usually writes reviews, but I do read them and wanted to make sure I posted about our very positive experience with this property and its owners.

Owner response: Thank you Lauren for your compliments and words of appreciation. It is rewarding to us to be able to provide a wonderful experience for our guests. It was kind of an unsettling time with the fires and all, but luckily they had calmed down by the time you arrived. We appreciate your trusting our on-site counsel and by keeping in close contact with you, we all worked through it. We too enjoy the location of WilderNest, hard to believe how quiet it is when sitting on the deck, except for the hummingbirds whirring around.

A"part of the family" is exactly how we feel when we stay at your wonderful cabin! From our first whiff of fresh baked bread as we enter your cozy home until we lock the door as we end our visit, we have been provided every comfort! The property is quiet, the beds are great, and the house warm and inviting--all of which make a restful stay in the Colorado Rockies!! We'll see you next year- God willing --for our 4th or 5th stay!

Owner response: We so enjoy having our returning guests appreciating the experience we have created at WilderNest. Your expression of enjoyment from entering, to having to leave is what we like to hear. We look forward to hearing from you this coming season.

After many trips is which we moved frequently from place to place, my wife and I decided it was time for a vacation where we would simply plop ourselves down and just take in the local people and area. Because of our love for Colorado and the Rockies, we chose Estes Park to be our spot for a full 8 days, After doing some research of "non-hotel" lodging opportunities, we chose Wildernest to be home for our stay and we were not disappointed. Everything fit the bill for a stay that ended up exceeding our expectations. Wildernest is just a short drive to the city, yet far enough away to have all the peace and quiet we desired. We couldn't get over how quiet the neighborhood was and how enjoyably rustic and natural the home site was. We became close friends with "Rocky" the rabbit who would come out each morning and bounce around the yard as we ate our breakfast outside on the deck. (He became such a part of our stay that I now have a picture of him I keep in my home office.) On another occasion we found a mother mule deer and her two yearlings basking in the sun in the front yard, after which time "Mom" munched her way up to within 10 feet of the deck where we quietly sat having an before dinner cocktail. You don't experience the wonder and beauty of nature like this everywhere. Wildernest turned out to be just perfect for our stay as it quickly felt like home to us. We would surely seek to rent this home again if we made another trip to the EP area in the future. It had all the space and amenities we needed, the kitchen was ample-sized and well-stocked with dishes and cookware, the home was very clean with comfortable furnishings and it turned out to be just as described by the owners. We had no disappointments and the owners were terrific to work with. We had just a fabulous time in the Estes Park area and were shocked at just how integrated the Elk are into the community. They feed along the roadsides, are easily seen on the golf courses and have even wandered the streets of downtown! We were there in mid September just as the rut was starting, and we made it a nightly ritual to venture early evening into the National Park to watch their gathering in the meadows........some of nature at its finest. In summary, Estes Park is a fabulous vacation spot and a stay at Widernest will go a long way to making your experience complete. It did it for us as this turned out to be one of our very favorite vacations ever!

Owner response: What can I say? You have pretty much said it all! We love getting these kind of reviews from our guests. This makes us strive even harder to be good hosts and be sure you all are taken care of. Thank you and we hope you will return again soon.

Me and 2 other family members had a great time at Wildernest in July. There was everything we needed - including the wildlife! I would highly recommend this home to anyone wanting a mountain retreat. The owners were very accomodating - it's close to the Park and downtown Estes. I'd love to go back someday!

We had a great time here in Estes Park. The house was great, had everything we needed, and it was close to everything, yet secluded enough for privacy. The beds are very comfortable. We appreciate the no pet/no smoking policy...the house had a pleasant smell and fresh baked bread waiting for us when we arrived. The view from the porch is breathtaking and we saw a lot of cool wildlife right here in the yard, including: a badger, an elk, some baby bunnies, very pretty birds, and ground squirrels. Our 10 year old son loved exploring outside and looking for wildlife. We also have a 2 year old and the house was very kid-friendly. We appreciated the closet full of games and puzzles, which we used. There is also a great library of movies and books for both kids and adults. An all-around great place to stay...and it saved us so much money to be able to cook our own meals instead of eating out all the time. The kitchen had everything we needed. Thank you for a wonderful stay here in the Rockies. We WILL be back and I'm sure we will be staying here at the "Wildernest." LOVE IT!

Owner response: We are happy that you had an enjoyable time. We do try to make sure that our guests have what they need to be comfortable and usually check in to visit not long after arrival. Our phone conversations with you were so pleasant and we felt good about having you stay in our cabin/home. We look forward to your return.

Our family stayed at this cabin on our trip to Estes Park in June (2011). The cabin was perfect. It was so clean & very roomy. Our kids enjoyed watching the videos in the sun room. The beds were very comfy, the kitchen was fully stocked & we enjoyed having a fire in the fire place at night. There was even laundry detergent for the washer & dryer. Dennis & Sylvia were so kind & easy to work with. Sylvia even had fresh bread in the bread maker for us when we got there. The views from the deck are beautiful & we used the gas grill to cook trout that our girls caught at Trout Haven. We would highly recommend this cabin to anyone who is planning a trip to Estes Park!

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Owner response: June is indeed a great time to visit Estes Park and the Rockies, not quite as busy yet. The wildflowers are coming out, the evenings may be cool enough to enjoy the fire in the fireplace. Glad that you found that to be the case, Kristine. We do hope to see you back sometime in the future. Thank you.

We have spent our summer vactions in Estes Park for the past 20 years. Three years ago we found the Wildernest property and have been staying there ever since. It is set in a nice quiet neighborhood close enough to town and the park to drive in a few minutes. We have seen elk, deer, coyotes, bear, badgers, beavers and bobcats in the area. So there is no shortage of wildlife. The home is furnished very well and very comfortable. The kitchen is very well stocked with all the pots pans and cooking utensils that anyone would need. This place is a winner and I would highly recommend it.

Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Owner response: It is always so gratifying to us to have our guests return again and again to the familiar and home-like setting that we want to provide. We try to furnish it with anything that we think we might need, and more, as if we were the guests. Fred and Sharon, we are so glad that you have chosen WilderNest and hope to see you again in the future.

Our 3 week stay here was the most delightful we've had in Estes, due mainly to the comfortableness of your home. One lovely little chipmunk came around almost every morning. One evening 7 deer grazed in the front yard while we were making dinner. (They described many other activities they enjoyed.) Thanks again for your hospitality. We will surely come again.

This was our first VRBO experience and this house set the bar high for future experiences. The house is everything we expected it to be and more. The pictures displayed in the listing are exactly as we found it. The owners take great pride in their property. The house was immaculate. We were greeted with home baked bread and a basket of goodies upon arrival. We spent many days hiking in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Coming home each day to a quiet neighborhood and the peaceful, comfortable surroundings was just what a vacation should be. Everything we could have needed was provided. There was a large collection of books and videos, hiking guides, bird guides (we used that one a lot!), games and Hummingbirds galore. WilderNest was our home away from home for a week and we would return in a heartbeat.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wildernest. Sunday morning 7/13, a bobcat came up the driveway. Around Wildernest we also saw hummingbirds, mule deer, Nuttall's cottontail ground squirrels and chipmunks. On Fish Creek Rd near by, we found a beaver's home with 5 beavers. Saw Big horn sheet twice in the park, spotted some moose .(Listed much other wildlife they saw. Look for this entry in the guest book.) Thanks so much for sharing your home.

The owners of this house will do everything they can to make your stay special. Warm bread with real butter and a goodie basket were waiting for us when we arrived. The house is immaculately clean. There are two bedrooms, a family room with a wood burning stove, a living room with a fireplace, two bathrooms and a large kitchen with everything you can imagine. The location is great, just a few miles from downtown Estes Park. There is a nice view from the back of the property of the continental divide. A nice deck is located at the front of the house. This house is in a nice, quiet residential area. There is a washer and dryer available for your use and a gas grill. There could not be nicer people renting out a vacation rental anywhere in Estes Park. We would highly recommend this place to everyone. I don't think I have ever seen a cleaner house. They have two television sets and a library of tapes for you to watch. Books are also available. Actually I can't imagine that you would need anything that they have not thought of already. You get a lot of space for the money. This place was perfect.

June 21-27, 2007 Thank you for letting us vacation at WilderNest. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Your home lived up to its name as we awoke several mornings to a yard full of elk. Thanks again. We had everything we needed.

September 10-14, 2007 The warm welcome of WilderNest was an immediate balm to the hectic world we left behind. We greatly appreciate your attention to detail and to our comfort. Thank you for sharing this peaceful "Nest" near the "Wilds".

August 8-26, 2007 (These guests already wrote a "positive email", but this is part of the two pages they wrote in the guest book.) What a wonderful time we've had here in Estes Park--this was our 1st time ever to rent a vacation home and you have set the bar very high for our future triips! We've been going nonstop during the day (even with 2 little ones) and WilderNest provided a very comfortable place for us to collapse. We enjoyed our hikes around Bear Lake and to Alberta Falls. Thanks again for the lovely accommodations and the hospitality. I am sure we will be back again!

July 1-8,2007 We had an excellent time! WilderNest was everything (and more) that we could have hoped for. The location, coziness and decor was a perfect way to end our days of hiking in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. It was a perfect vacation. We hope to come back soon!

We Really enjoyed our stay last week. Unfortunately, our stay was cut short due to the illness of one of us. It was a pleasant change to be staying in a home. We hope to return soon. Everything was wonderful! Thanks!!

July 1-14, 2006 We truly enjoyed our 2 week stay here and are so happy we finally chose to stay in one place for our vacation. Your home was so much like being in our own home only we also had the beautiful mountain scenery. We were throughly entertained by the humming birds and feeders in your yard and we had breakfast on the deck almost everyday. We all know we will return and hopefully it will work out for us to spend time here at WilderNest again. It was all we hoped it would be and more.

August 8-12, 2006 What a nice retreat this was! This is one of the most comfortable, peaceful places we have stayed. The location is perfect to take in the mountains and their splendor. On the deck we kept the camera handy for wildlife sightings. On our final day here, a herd of elk "invaded" the neighborhood, and we snapped pictures while they grazed on the neighbor's flowers and tree. It was a magnificent sight to send us off. Thaks for the memorable stay!

August 12-20, 2006 Thank you for helping to make this a wonderful first visit to Rocky Mountain National Park! We were thrilled to walk into WilderNest and see your wonderful home. It had everything we needed, including a booster seat for our 2 year old.
