Because of a misunderstanding on reservation dates, I arrived a day later than expected. However, Helene graciously welcomed me - turned up the thermostat to provide a warm and cozy atmosphere. When I reviewed the property on the website it understated the size of the rooms - it was much bigger than I anticipated. It was very clean - the bathroom was spotless. Rather than leaving the property to eat dinner I asked if Helene would prepare a meal for me - this led to a gourmet meal, dessert and a glass of wine. In the morning coffee and freshly baked bread awaited me. The scenery is breathtaking - not wanting to miss a bit of the scenery I even opened the blinds at night so I could look up at the stars. Even though I live in Missoula - a short distance from Cougar Ranch - it was like embarking on a new adventure. I definitely plan to go again.

Our party of 15 stayed at Cougar Ranch for a long weekend because of a family wedding in Missoula. There were five parents, five twenty year olds and five teenagers. It was a perfect place for all of us. The house was exactly as described, although much bigger than we expected. There was so much room for everyone! A large kitchen with two tables, huge living room upstairs and family room downstairs, plenty of bathrooms for showers and getting ready, and good-sized bedrooms with very comfortable beds. The twenty year olds especially enjoyed the pool table and sitting in the hot tub at night marveling at the view of the stars, Helene was a wonderful host and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay here again when coming to Missoula. Thank you Helene for sharing your home with us!

My boyfriend and I decided to meet in Missoula as a halfway point and came across this B&B. We wanted a romantic, relaxing and quiet getaway and this location proved to be just that. It was very close to the Missoula airport and not a bad drive to downtown. We fished Rock Creek which was about 30 minutes from the ranch. The hot tub was a nice feature after a day of fishing to relax and unwind while enjoying the sunset over the mountain range. The host, Helene, went above and beyond in accommodating us and cooking an amazing breakfast. She had multiple dishes that included homemade breads and chocolate soufflé. She was also very helpful in providing local attraction information as we were not familiar with the area. We highly recommend this place and plan to come back this winter.

The house is in a nice location. The view is beautiful. A good road to Missoula trip about 20 minutes. The description last August was a little different than what we had but the description now is more accurate.

Everything about Cougar Ranch was exactly as described and expected. We rented the home as a central meeting spot for some friends (some coming from Washington, others coming from Eastern Montana) for a 30th birthday party. There was more than enough room for 20 people to sleep comfortably. The master king bedroom and one of the bedrooms in the basement with a queen size bed (the one without the bathroom) have especially comfortable mattresses. The property was well-maintained and our host, Helene, was very helpful in answering questions before and during our stay. There are a couple other homes close by, but for the most part, we didn't even know they were there. I highly recommend this home for large groups. Although we couldn't see all of the surrounding mountains because of forest fires and smoke in the area, the scenery that we could see was breathtaking. I would definitely rent this home again.

Cougar Ranch was a wonderful place for our family vacation. Centrally located, we used this as our home base to visit Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, Bison range, Ft. Missoula, St. Ignatius the Smokejumpers Museum and a family wedding in Missoula. Be sure to eat at the Buck Snort, a great restaurant right down the road. The house was quite large with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for the 10 adults and 1 child who were with us. House was clean; bathrooms were immaculate. Large gathering spaces inside and out. We hosted a post-wedding b-b-q for 30 with no trouble. The hot tub was great; also put the firepit to good use. Helene was wonderful--available by phone for all our needs and questions. Weather was 90 degrees daytime and 58 degrees nighttime. The house was cool all day and night. All 10 adults commented on how comfortable the beds were. Slept great! Sitting on the deck looking at the Bitterroot and Mission mountain ranges early in the morning and at sunset was wonderful for this family from Chicago. We bought a roll of quarters for the washing machine and hung the clothes to dry on the supplied drying rack. Plenty of towels for all of us. Would definitely recommend Cougar Ranch to anyone looking for a place for a large group. Great Montana hospitality--thanks Helene!

We had an overnighter Women's Retreat. It was so nice to have all the open space in the house and the hot tub out back! The big kitchen and main living room allowed our group to have meetings and large groups cooking in the kitchen. We had access to a fire pit and trails to hike and run. The colorful carpet and various bold colors in each room were quite unique lol. Wasn't as modern as we expected.. but We hope to book again! Thanks Cougar Ranch for the cozy, homey Montana Get-A-Way!

This place is exceptional and the photo's don't begin to depict the size and comfort of the ranch. My family reunion was near Missoula so I rented this ranch for some of us to stay in. There were 12 adults and three children who actually slept there but we hosted a couple of gatherings for the entire clan, about 34 of us. There are actually two master bedroom suites and next time I will take the Master bedroom in the lower level (it was cooler down there and the upstairs Master bedroom/bath has a great sunken tub but no shower; however, there are two additional baths with showers on the main floor. The ranch was exceptionally clean and the owner is so nice and ready to meet your needs.

"Four of us (2 couples) rented this beautiful home for two nights and we left thinking the experience was much too short and should be repeated. Cougar Ranch was like a home away from home, with all the comforts of a well-furnished home. I have never been in a house with so many floor to ceiling windows taking advantage of the beautiful scenery, serene peaks, sunsets and sunrises with amazing colors. We also enjoyed the restaurants and a concert of local musicians in Missoula, home of the University of Montana, a city within easy commute that has a lot of cultural activities year-round, it seems. We used to live in Chicago where we didn't enjoy the winters much, but we found the dry Montana cold easier to cope with. A great place to get away from the routine and rediscover the beauties of Nature."

We had a group of 8 stay here for xmas. We were satisfied with the property overall however here are a few little points that I would have liked to have known before we rented. Main floor thermosat locked up low 60's. Asked for it to be turned up and was told we would have to pay more! Fortunatly the temp was mild so we made due. The hot tub had lots of water but the temp was set at 98. We turned it up and it was fine. The kitchen is very dated with older appliances, silverware, cutlery etc. Fridge had some mold. There is some odd pictures around the house that aren't really what you would expect in a MT house with a muslim theme. My war vet relatives that visited were a little disturbed. The laundry room is coin operated. Only one warm shower every half hour. One very small older tube style tv in the bsmt. Septic system backed up last day and offered a rather unpleasent smell. There is a beautiful fireplace however we werent allowed to use becasue of insurance restrictions. Were told we could use fire pit but there was no wood anywhere. Pictures don't show 2 other homes within 200 feet of this one. So if you think your going to be tucked away secluded this isnt entirely the case. Owner was nice and left us alone. We didnt leave feeling ripped off. House served purpose and we had a good time with family. The house is big with lots of seating and is comfortable enough. Sleeping arrangements were comfortable.

Owner response: Twenty years ago, travelers had to make do with hotels and B&B accommodations -- could be lovely, but little privacy. In many countries we now enjoy the opportunity to rent what's often a family's second home. A host opens his/her home and hopes that guests will enjoy it and treasure the opportunity. It's a blow to find travel photos hanging on the walls damaged (because of Muslim theme, possibly,) new toilet plugged and white bath towels used to mop up the overflow. Cougar Ranch vacation rental home is 5000 square feet. The first owner thoughtfully equipped it with two big electric furnaces to provide central heating. They work so well that the thermostat controlling both has to be adjusted 5 degrees below the temperature that's needed. When there are guests, the thermostat is set at 64/65, to provide a constant temperature of 68/69. This is Montana and it's a good idea to bring sweaters in the winter. Conserving energy is an issue with most state residents, and in a house where guests are able to adjust temperature in all the bedrooms and bathrooms, and the bar and family room, the central heating is seen as adequate by most guests. The house also is equipped with 2 large water tanks, so they should provide more than 1 shower every half hour. As for the kitchen being dated, it does not have granite counters and a cappucino machine, but a twin-unit coffe machine, 4 electric burners, 2 electric ovens, one microwave, and a large barbecue on the deck outside the kitchen should keep the average cook happy. There is one small rental home nearby along the creek, and a corral area with miniature horses and barns. The young couple renting this smaller home took it upon themselves to provide a Christmas tree, decorations and snow shoveling for the guest family, but there was no thank you. Traditional Montana hospitality was wasted.

                          Owner info

                          Year Purchased: 1998

About the owner: I kept coming back to western Montana for holidays, and finally I decided it would make more sense to buy property there and start enjoying it full-time. There is so much to discover that I feel like I just arrived. With my younger son getting ready for college, there will be more time for hiking, kayaking and skiing. My new project is to train a young huskie to learn to stay home instead of roaming. Another hobby is cooking gourmet meals for family, friends and guests.

                          Why the Owner Chose Missoula:
This architect's home was on the ranch when I bought it. I built my own home in the forested part of the ranch, and this large house in the meadows is perfect for family reunions, seminars, fishing parties...weddings

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The house is large enough to let people enjoy privacy and quiet. Guests who want to reconnect with a simpler lifestyle may help feed the ponies and goats, hike around, discover the National Bison Range nearby, local art galleries, drive to Glacier Park and Flathead Lake.
