NOW RENTING VACATION-STYLE YEAR-ROUND!!! Our quaint, long-time family beach house has once again been made available as a vacation rental. The surprisingly spacious living area with dining table and breakfast bar is open to the kitchen, making this cottage bright, airy and welcoming...an ideal place for families of 4-6.

Only one block away from Newport's finest stretch of beach and boardwalk, this vacation home is within easy reach of the area's best beachfront and ocean recreation Newport Beach has to offer: great waves for the accomplished surfer, yet gentle shorelines for the youngest sandcastle builder.

This one-story, single-family home is located on the corner of 34th St./Balboa (on the quieter side) so beachgoers need walk only 10 houses to get to the surf; and avoids the inconveniences of having to share common areas such as patios, balconies, walkways and precious garage parking spaces with other tenants as in most duplex vacation rentals. There is a two-car garage, plus an extra parking space behind as well.

Our 2 bedroom/1 bathroom home offers an ample patio in front for sitting in the shade of the umbrella and watching the world go by, plus a second backyard patio for sunning, dining and barbecuing in privacy. Both bedrooms contain large closet space and there are ceiling fans throughout. One bedroom is furnished with two twin beds, while the other contains a queen bed. A queen size air mattress, with linens, is provided for extra sleeping accommodations.

Year Purchased: 1958

My husband and I both had the privilege of growing up on the Newport Beach peninsula - only 20 blocks away from each other! So when we first met in high school, 40 miles inland, and began dating years later, we both shared the dream of one day bringing our own family back to Newport to live in our favorite neighborhood. After 12 years of marriage, that dream came true, and our family began a permanent vacation! Our 4 kids share the wonderful memories of riding bikes down the oceanfront boardwalk to their "school on the beach" everyday, accompanied by the sight of dolphins, and migrating California gray whales. Pretty magical!

Surfing, fishing, boating, and all things ocean, have been a major part of our family's lifestyle. It's hard to vacation elsewhere when we live in the best destination place possible!

We did discover the different kind of ocean beauty of Kauai, Hawaii, in 2005, where we also own a lovely family vacation home and have made it available as a vacation rental as well.

My husband Mike can be found locally surfing a variety of watercraft - shortboard, longboard, stand-up, or mat, just about everyday. My preference is the social connection with other moms stand-up paddling in Newport Harbor.

Our family has been involved with all aspects of managing vacation rentals since 1995, when our own home had a darling studio that we rented to friends. All four of our kids have grown up cleaning rentals as their summer job, and they are still a part of our family's hands-on crew that works year-round maintaining our family's 4 vacation properties on the Newport Peninsula.

We also have an ongoing Christian surf ministry, Surfing Expeditions & Adventures (SEA), that provides youth camps & programs in Baja, Mexico; Kauai, HI; and Southern California...it's another good excuse to stay close to the Pacific Ocean!

It's very gratifying for us to be able to serve other families and guests in our Newport vacation homes!

Why the Owner Chose Balboa Peninsula

My folks purchased the Corner Cabana as a second home in 1958...they were some of the original beach bums of Southern California, and they had courted just a few miles north at Anaheim Landing (now a part of Seal Beach), in the 1930's & '40's. After many years of fond vacation memories for our family, the possibility of augmenting my folks' income in their later years by offering their long-time vacation home as a rental, became a reality. We still maintain a great connection with the neighbors on 34th Street, and truly believe it's one of the best beach locations in Newport, with its close proximity to the ocean and Newport Harbor, as well as shopping, eateries, recreational equipment rentals, and quick freeway access to John Wayne Airport (15 minutes), Disneyland (20 minutes) & Knott's Berry Farm (40 minutes). Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is a 45-60 minute drive.

Both of our families have a long history of vacationing and subsequently owning homes in Newport Beach. My husband and I also spent our own courtship enjoying bike rides along the boardwalk, sailing in the harbor, walking along the shore to our favorite restaurants, or simply watching the sun set behind Catalina Island. So it seemed like a natural fit for us to host other families, friends and guests in our favorite seaside playground where we have so many fond memories!

My folks, now in their 90's, now live just a mile from their Corner Cabana, and every now and then, they are able to visit their favorite spot on 34th Street whenever there is a break between guests. My dad still insists that 34th Street has the best body-surfing waves in the whole world!

The Unique Benefits of this House

One of our greatest pleasures as a family, is to be able to "do life" on foot or a bicycle! Errands to the grocery store, post office, or bank are always more enjoyable walking or biking. And all of our favorite local coffee houses, restaurants, galleries, and movie theaters are within a few blocks and easily accessed on foot or bicycle. Our goal has always been to avoid driving the car anywhere, and it sure makes parking a breeze! Probably our favorite times are when a big south swell hits our coastline, and we grab our bikes to ride to The Point or The Wedge to watch the extreme surfers (and professionals) strut their stuff on 20-30 foot waves! There just aren't very many destinations or cities that can boast accommodating such an easygoing, outdoor lifestyle year-round!

Our Corner Cabana vacation home is situated near the beginning of the Boardwalk on 36th St., which extends several miles south, past the Newport Pier area, which is about 10 blocks away, the Balboa Pier area & Fun Zone, and finally to the Newport Harbor entrance. To the north, the bike path extends several miles to include wonderful rides along the ocean to Huntington Beach, Sunset Beach, Seal Beach and even Long Beach - all fun destinations without ever leaving the coastline!

Because our family grew up here in Newport, and we frequent most of the favorite local establishments on a daily basis, we can confidently make recommendations for local businesses, and likewise enjoy the recommendations from others as vacation home owners/operators. We are well-known in the community and our reputation as good rental hosts is very important to us, especially within the surrounding neighborhood!
