Our redwood cottage is a wonderful house perched on the ledges above Birch Harbor. It has gorgeous views and has plenty of wonderful blueberries for picking. You can watch the tides from the kitchen table and see the humming birds flit past the windows. It is private, the last house on the road, surrounded by trees and has a wrap-around deck for taking in the quintessential views of Maine. It is located 5 minutes from Winter Harbor and the Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia National Park. The property extends down to the water 100 feet away and it is possible to launch small boats, kayaks, or canoes right from the rocks below the house. The large combined living/dining area provides a great place to gather for meals or with friends. Natural tide pools on the shore provide a great temporary home for crabs and starfish before the tide comes back in. There is even a bald eagle that sometimes perches in the trees in front of the house. Well behaved pets are always welcome.

Schoodic Point: Acadia National Park: The cottage is only a few minutes from Schoodic Point, a beautiful part of Acadia National Park. There are picnic areas, a dock where you can fish or look for sand dollars, and hiking trails. Biking is also great around this area. It is far less populated than the Bar Harbor area and is very relaxing.

The cottage waterfront...: The house overlooks Birch Harbor, a small sheltered harbor with a few lobster boats and lots of scenery. Walks along the water are wonderful with the rocks and seaweed making for classic Maine views. The tidal range is about 6-8 feet here so there is always something new to see in the ever-changing landscape. Carry-in boat access is available right from shore - perfect for kayaks or canoes. Boat rental is possible at local businesses if you don't have one. They also rent bicycles. The blueberry picking is excellent on the ledges around the cottage - perfect for muffins or just eating them plain!

Our Family: My aunt originally built this cottage on Birch Harbor back in the mid 1970s. The redwood construction has been perfect for a Maine getaway. She was a snow bird - spending winters in Florida and her summers in Maine at the cottage. She loved the blueberries and would make us fresh muffins whenever we visited as kids. We would take trips down to the lobster pound and buy lobsters off the boat. It was at the cottage that we learned the wonders of the sea by collecting sea creature from the tidal flats and putting them in the tide pool - only to be washed away at the next tide. Her kindness has allowed us to keep visiting the cottage and now to share it with others. I hope you choose to stay at our little retreat and that you will come to love it as we do.

We had a great time at the Redwood Cottage over Memorial Day weekend. The cottage was well-appointed with everything you would need for a restful stay. The views of the harbor are breathtaking from the wrap-around deck. The cottage was clean and in good order when we arrived. There is a full kitchen as well as a washer/dryer available for those who need it. Please understand that this is rustic Maine in all it's glory! If you need wi-fi, cable TV, or a good cell phone connection this cottage is not for you. But, there are enough old-fashioned board games, books, and beautiful scenery to keep you more than occupied. There is also a DVD player in the living area, so if you need some entertainment for the evenings just bring a few movies with you. The Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park is just a few miles down the road and if you are interested in everything that Mount Desert Island provides, it's about a 40 minute drive away. When we were there in late May, the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor was not yet running--but during the summer it runs daily. Overall a great experience and one that I would reccomend to anyone looking for some nice relaxing time on the Maine coast!

I waited to review this home so that I wouldn't be biased. Even after a couple of months I feel the need to rave. With less than a week's notice the cabin was ready for occupancy; clean and neat with everything available that was listed and we needed. If you plan on watching TV you will be disappointed since coverage is spotty, but there are a few movies provided for a "rainy day". We were on the go so the TV was a non-issue. The location was perfect for day trips up and down the coast. A nearby lobster pound more than filled our need for lobster and at a much more reasonable rate than stores or restaurants. I would not hesitate to return--or recommend this to anyone who does not feel the need to be constantly connected to the world.

Owner response: Thank you so much for visiting with us. We were happy to have you and I am glad you had such a good time! We also made some changes this fall that may help the TV issue. We bought a 32" flat screen and a dvd player so hopefully the reception will be a bit better. Also, this winter they are building a new cell tower a couple miles away so cell phone coverage should be excellent. Thanks again and we hope to have you back next year!

This cottage is simply great! You will feel comfortable instantly. The cottage has all the amenities and the surrounding area has a good store, marina and restaurants. Buy and cook your own lobster to enjoy at Dan's cottage . The birdwatching is superb. We loved it! Thanks!

Whenever I go to the cottage I am reminded of why they call Maine vacation land. I am so happy that we could share our little corner of it with you! -Dan

Location was excellent. Directions were easy to follow. Layout and amenities were as advertised and made the place very comfortable to stay in. Everything was very clean and well taken care of. I would recommend this location to just about anyone. All the activities (hiking, biking, shopping, sightseeing, even going to church) were all fun and easily available. Even found wild cranberries and an acid bog with carnivorous plants. Didn't find one restaurant I didn't like. The local specialty food shops were great for picking up things to cook as well. Even found a couple of local farm stands for some really fresh produce. If you go before July you can catch the strawberry stand right up the road, and if you go later in July you have your own lowbush blueberry patch in the front yard. Saw a bald eagle on the cove once and porcupines feeding in the trees just off the front porch.

Four of us stayed at the cottage in late September. It provided marvelous views of the harbor (even an eagle) and a great home base for enjoying area attractions, including Bar Harbor, Mt. Desert Island, Campobello Island, and local wine tasting. Perhaps our favorite "hidden jewel" was the Schoodic Point section of Acadia Nat. Park, which is within reasonable walking distance from the cottage, but better to drive through it. The surf on the rocks was mesmerizing. I'm sure we will try to get back in the future.

This remote cottage with spectacular setting overlooking Birch Harbor will help you unwind. This is a nature lover"s dream. We enjoyed watching the eagles soar overhead and the osprey fishing at low tide. The views from the deck are just wonderful and there was always a beautiful breeze. The clean cottage is nicely set up with lots of extras to cook with. TV and cell phone service was spotty, but who would want to sit inside and watch tv? There is easy access to the Schoodic Point section of Acadia National Park (1 1/2 mi.) which we toured several times. On site caregiver was very nice and helpful. Incredible ocean views and scenery wherever we drove makes it even better!
