Sewanee cottage description
Our winter holiday rates are terrific at Red Oak Hollow.
This week end is Lessons and Carols and if you have tickets for the event and need a place to stay: Call ASAP!
We offer a 2 bedroom cottage, decorated for the holiday and fully equiped on tranquil 30 acre mountain estate. Private and so quiet you can hear the stars twinkle!
Red Oak Hollow estate offers a brand new country style 18 Hole Disc Golf course, (we supply the discs), badminton court, ( we supply the rackets and birdie), horseshoes course, ( we supply the horseshoes), croquet set, catch and release fishing ( we have basic poles and barb-less hooks), canoe (with life preserves) to paddle around one of our three ponds, private walking trail thru our woods ( park bench to stop and rest). All this at no extra cost to you. Not used by the general public, only available for our guests. This is a private estate.
Sewanee is famous for it's great hiking trails, abundant wildflowers and wild life. Red Oak Hollow's unique feature is that our estate is large, private, rural and peaceful and yet so close to the campus. Sewanee and St. Andrew's parents and alumni are generous with their accolades and often say ' I wish I knew about this place earlier....why would I stay anywhere else.' Please read our reviews, you'll see why we are the coveted place to stay for all Sewanee events. Red Oak Hollow is just a short drive to the center of The University of the South campus. Enjoy your day on campus and come back to a tranquil mountain retreat. The garden cottage is part of our 30 acres private estate of hardwood trees, fantastic native and butterfly gardens, ponds stocked with catfish, bass and brim, entertaining wildlife and picture perfect wildflowers.
As owners, we live on the property and maintain the cottage and gardens. If you have a question, need directions, looking for a recommendation for hiking or dining, we are here to help.
The cottage is just shy of 1,000 sq feet, with a large living room, complete kitchen, two bedrooms, and a very large bathroom. Each room of the air conditioned cottage is decorated with a country or mountain inspiration. Why rent a couple of motel rooms, when you can have the comfort of a private home on an estate, for a much better price?
The cottage has two bedrooms, each with traditional quilts. For your maximum sleep comfort, a King size sleep number bed is featured in the 'Wildflower' Master Bedroom. This room is decorated with local wildflower photos and 2 tiffany styled lamps.
The Master Bedroom is connected to the Bathroom. The second “The Fox and Fish' bedroom has a set of bunk beds. For privacy and relaxation, each bedroom has a TV.
The large living room has a dual reclining couch, a reclining chair and an upholstered rocking chair. The 30” TV has premium satellite programming. Current popular magazine are on the end tables. Bird and flower books are in the bookcase. A DVD/CD/VCR player is in the living room, along with movies for both children and adult viewing.
The 'Red Chicken Kitchen' seats four and comes complete with a full size refrigerator, electric stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, a full set of dinnerware, dishes, wine opener, pots and pans. The kitchen has a bay window with a garden view. The kitchen is perfect if you wanted to invite your college student for a home cooked meal. The front porch has a propane barbecue. A full size washing machine and dryer complete your needs.
The bathroom is surprisingly large with dual vanities, a separate shower and large soaking tub.
Red Oak Hollow is very kid friendly. For the very little ones, we have an available high chair and pack and play, suitable for sleeping Stuffed animals are on the bunkbeds. The kids bedroom has a 20 plus Disney film collection with a TV with a video player. For toddlers or small dogs, the back yard is fenced in.
Kids love to fish, especially if they are biting. Bring your poles. Red Oak Hollow only allows Catch and Release, but the sport and tranquility offers ample rewards.
There is a large fire pit with seating down by the ponds. Toast a marshmallow or just enjoy the fire one evening. We supply the kindling and firewood.
As an ambitious Master Gardener, we have created numerous gardens throughout the estate. Our gardens have been considered one of the best displays of native plants on the mountain. A raised bed vegetable garden is in the back yard of the cottage. Go ahead, pick a cherry tomato or snip some sweet basil for your salad.
The flower garden nearest the cottage is the Butterfly Garden, filled with sun drops, butterfly weed, butterfly bush, coneflowers, and pineapple sage. Another garden bed lines the cottage yard, featuring the Southern “Bird Girl”. It is full of Shasta daisies, dahlia, hollyhock and stargazer lilies.
There are two large native gardens, highlighted by spring daffodils, trilliums and the “elusive Cinderella of the wild flower world”, pink lady’s slippers. The flowering trees are plentiful with dogwoods, crepe myrtle, crap apple and red bud.
The “Gnome’s Home Garden” is down inspiration hill and it’s set off by its beauty and privacy. Numerous forest gnomes tend this one particular garden. It has a twin size iron bed filled with a patchwork of annuals. There is a quaint café table setting in this garden to enjoy its crescent shape bed filled with daylily, azalea, roses, mallows and hibiscus.
We have a bluebird trail, with seven blue bird houses, usually occupied. The pond attracts ducks, cranes and our returning pair of Canadian geese. Wildlife is a way of life here.

Such a peaceful retreat near Sewanee. The owners are available for any questions. The gardens are lovely and the accommodations are well equipped. I enjoy cooking when I come to Sewanee and the herb garden was a real treat. I enjoyed my stay very much.

Peaceful retreat for a family
Peaceful retreat for a family
Red Oak Hollow is a wonderful find for families looking for a comfortable stay in the Sewanee area. The property is beautiful, with ample opportunity for star-gazing in the evening and bird-watching during the day. Just a few miles from The University of the South, the property is well-suited for a couple with young children (who will enjoy the bunk-bed). Mesha and Tim are attentive hosts, and available to answer any and all questions about the property or the surrounding area, without being intrusive. Be sure to stroll by the ponds in the morning or in the evening, and take some time to sit in the rocking chairs on the front porch and soak up the serenity of nature. We look forward to our next stay!

Natural Charm, Family and Pet Friendly!
Natural Charm, Family and Pet Friendly!
My family and I stayed at Red Oak Hollow's cottage and were welcomed with warmth. Our accomodations were excellent, the beds clean and comfortable, the tub in the bathroom was huge! (Always a pleaser in my book). We loved roaming the 30+ acre property and the owner took my children fishing (my 5-year-old caught the biggest catfish in the pond, nicknamed "Righty"). The owners had plenty of touring information to provide for us! We spent some time touring/walking the St. Andrews University grounds (gorgeous) and took a family trip to Lake Winnepesaukah amusement park, which was a really fun experience that offered amenities for all age groups. There are lots of hiking trails...we visited Fiery Gizzard trail for an easy/medium hike. Also, we visited a charming little store in Sewanee called Moony's offering natural/organic foods, art and yarn creations. A must see during your visit. Overall it was a lovely experience and I would recommend Red Oak Hollow to anyone looking for a place to stay in or near Sewanee.

Another wonderful visit to Sewanee
Another wonderful visit to Sewanee
We have traveled to Sewanee many, many times for the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. We have stayed in many different places over the years, but this is the place we will always come back to. I have dietary restrictions and the cottage is a great place to prepare my meals with my family. The quality of the kitchen supplies is superior to my own! I love sleeping on beds made with fabulous sheets and bedding. The place is always clean and comfortable. It is a home away from home in every respect plus the grounds are meticulously maintained and lovely to walk. We watched the fish in the lakes. We walked the trail and saw unusual wildlife. We enjoyed our meals on the porch and watched the birds at the feeder. There was a fire pit for those late night conversations. The wood was already prepared and ready to light. Our stay could not have been more serene and peaceful. I will never stay anyplace else. I am a fan for life. I made my reservations early both times and was pleased with the quick and professional response. This is a great value destination. The beds are amazing. The furniture is high end. The attention to detail is appreciated. The owners are very knowledgable about the area and gave us nice suggestions on places to visit. I am so lucky to have found this gem.

My teenaged daughters and I spent a lovely 6 days at Red Oak Hollow. Our accommodations were wonderful: beautifully decorated, sparklingly clean, and über-comfortable with everything a guest could want (extra pillows, blankets, towels, etc.). The grounds and views are gorgeous, and the overall feeling serene and peaceful. There is spectacular hiking in the area, and the campus at Sewanee only a few minutes away. Red Oak Hollows is a GEM. The owners, Mesha and Tim, could not have been more accommodating and kind ~ I feel my daughters and I made new friends. They are truly special.

A Great Stay On The Mountain
A Great Stay On The Mountain
We stayed at the cottage for a week in early June. The accomodations were cozy and comfortable and provided everything we needed. We hiked many of the nearby trails including BuggyTop Cave, Natural Bridge, Fiery Gizzard, and the Savage Gulf Area. Each trail was beautiful. The cottage is also about an hour away from Chattanooga so that made for a nice day drip. It was so great that they welcomed pets into the cottage because our 1 year old rat terrier enjoyed playing ball on the open land and made friends with the owners dogs. Overall, the cottage was clean and relaxing and provided us with the perfect accomodations during our trip to Tennessee. Be sure to check out Mesha's stunning flowers around the cottage!

Four days at Red Oak Hollow
Four days at Red Oak Hollow
I enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the property. The cottage was very well equipped and comfortable. The only problem was that the air conditioning stopped working during my stay, but I didn't tell the owner until I was leaving because the weather became cooler and the cabin was not uncomfortable.

Owner response: Jim, We are so happy that you had a chance to relax at Red Oak Hollow. We work very hard to maintain the beautiful surroundings; the ponds, hiking trail, gardens and the cottage. When you told my hubby about the air conditioner, he had a repairman there by the end of the day, not always an easy accomplishment when you live in the mountains. If you find your self back in Sewanee to continue your research on your book, we would love to have you back.
While visiting Sewanee, my children and I needed a place to overnight. "fishing" is what drew my four little anglers to Red Oak Hollow. The setting is removed, quiet, and serene. After dinner in the roomy, very clean guest cabin, we all headed to the pond. The kids pulled in one big pet catfish after another, and were delighted with them. The owners are a lovely couple, and made a small fire for us to roast marshmallows. Tired, happy, and covered in chocolate and sugar, the kids all slipped into a warm oversized bath. We all slept soundly, but left much too early for home the next morning. The next time we visit, we will stay for more than a day!

A great, relaxing weekend!
A great, relaxing weekend!
My husband and I stayed at Red Oak Hollow while our daughter attended an event at The University of the South and the accommodations couldn't have been better. It was very charmingly decorated, the kitchen was well outfitted, the bed was super comfy, and we really enjoyed the two ponds with the wildlife watching opportunities they supplied. The WiFi and TV services helped us stay connected with the outside world, though we surely didn't need technology to entertain us. The hosts are very gracious and give you ideas for local dining, hiking, and shops, but also respect your privacy so that you can enjoy the beautiful property.

Owner response: Melissa and Gary, It truly was a pleasure to meet you and we are so happy that you enjoyed your week-end of relaxation. It is pretty cool to be down by the ponds, check in with our free WiFi for your email and watch of Blue Heron fish for a large mouth bass for his dinner. Fantastic Family Retreat
Fantastic Family Retreat
This place is a godsend for Sewanee alums travelling with young kids. Mesha had a perfectly clean high chair and portable crib all set up for our baby when we arrived. We had all the amenities a young family could want -- a short hiking trail, two ponds with catfish and bass who like to be fed or caught and released by young fishermen, a well-stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, a separate TV / VCR combo with kid's movies in the bedroom with the bunkbeds, and a huge bathroom with soaking tub for mom to relax after chasing the kids around all day. Tim amd Mesha are wonderful hosts - friendly and welcoming to children as well as adults, and go out of their way to make sure their guests are comfortable. My 8 year old enjoyed our visit so much that he is already begging me to bring him back.

About the owner: We are blessed to be living our passions. The wife is a gifted Tennessee master gardener. The hubby is a seasoned fisherman with a well stocked pond. We live on a mountain within a college community. It doesn't get better than this! We have had guests love our place and their stay here ,so much they have bought their own property in Sewanee, to build their dream home.
Why the Owner Chose Sewanee:
Sewanee is not a city, nor a town, it's a village with historic character. It's on top of a mountain, with a thriving private university and prep school. There is always something cultural to do and the hiking here is world class. We are happy to secure restaurant reservations at some of our favorite places. We have maps and guide books on hand to point out the best hiking trails, with waterfalls and interesting rock formations. The fun and relaxation of fishing is available right on our ponds. Down by the ponds are two park benches with tables, a picnic table, hammock, swinging chair and fire pit.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Red Oak Hollow is our little heaven on earth. Actually, 30 acres is a lot of heaven. We absolutely love the unique community of Sewanee and we are proud of what we have been able to create on our property in 10 short years. Staying at Red Oak Hollow lets you totally unwind. Nap in the hammock, throw a fishing pole in the pond in the late afternoon. Watch the wild ducks in the morning ,swimming in the ponds. Walk the gardens and read the tags that identify the flowers. Snip herbs for your salad from the vegetable garden. Stroll down the private country road that cuts thru our woods and cross the wild flower meadow. Rent a bike and ride thru the village of Sewanee. Hike the Perimeter Trail and see an outstanding biodiversity of plants. Catch the gorgeous views from Morgan's Steep and Green's view. Hike Shake Rag Hollow, an old growth forest and delight in wildflowers of one of the most magicial hikes on the Cumberland Plateau.
