Fantastic location, Romantic, Great for Families!!!

Date of Stay: 12/01/11 Review Submitted: 01/08/12

My wife, 3 children ages 5, 7, and 9, and my father-in-law rented this home in early December to be close to my family who live in Lanikai. The location couldn't have been better. It was a short drive to Lanikai Beach (one of the most beautiful beaches in the world!). The kids enjoyed playing on the beach and in the tide pools in front of the home. They also had a blast seeing the turtles and Turtle Cove which is just a short stroll from the home. I am a realtor in La Jolla, CA and own 2 vacation rentals and represent 12 others. I was very impressed to see the amenities that the owner provided including: masks and snorkels, beach toys, beach chairs, bikes, etc. We had a chance to visit with he and his wife and both were very warm and accommodating. My father-in-law spent a good amount of time sleeping out on the lounge recliners on the grass area in front of the home. This was his first trip to Hawaii and is already making plans to return next year. My wife and I slept with the windows opened so we could hear the waves breaking against the rocks. I would highly recommend this home and plan on returning in the future. Mahalo to the owners for making this a great vacation!

Owner response:Great points, Lanikai and Kailua Beach are two of the nicest beaches in all of Hawaii. Lanikai was rated the best beach by the Travel Channel for all the islands. Turtle Cove is a highlight for many and just 2 blocks away. You can see the turtles swimming around in water that is less than waist deep and at high tides they are always there. I am glad the amenities are appreciated. I purchased the best Snorkels that don’t allow water in and the best Boogie Boards and fins. We have nice beach mats with a blow up pillow and chairs too.

AK & FL miss Hawai'i!

Guest: Missing Kailua! (Ketchikan, Alaska)
Date of Stay: 10/05/11 Review Submitted: 10/18/11

Our stay was incredible! To wake up with waves crashing and to enjoy a cup of Kona coffee right on the beach in our pj's was amazing. The views were breath taking and so close to my favorite beach - Kailua. The home was very welcoming for 4 adults and convieniently located near everything. We enjoyed our stay immensley and will consider staying again if and when we travel back to O'ahu!

Owner response:Glad they enjoyed their stay. This is what this rental is all about, waking up to see the sunrise out of the Ocean while enjoying your coffee or breakfast. It is about being connected to the Ocean the entire time you are in your unit. Kailua and Lanikai are the two nicest beaches on the island, if not all of Hawaii, and we are just minutes from both.

Excellent place for a family!!

This was our first trip to Hawaii, and we picked this rental from VRBO web site. We loved it! Waking up every morning and watching the sun rise. Enjoying the surf crashing on the shore every evening. PERFECT location, since we had a short drive to Kailua and Lanikai beaches. Very close to a Safeway grocery store, and we had everything we needed to cook our breakfast in the unit. The owner was very helpful, recommending things to do and answering any questions we had about local activities. Highly recommend it!!!

Owner response:“Waking up and watching the sunrise.” “Enjoying the surf crashing on the shore”. Close to Safeway and Kailua and Lanikai Beach. These are the highlights of our rental. If you are not interested in waking up every morning to see the sun coming out of the Ocean, you can probably find a better unit in Kailua Town, but for those who love the Ocean, this is as close as you can get to it, and the only option under $750 for families of 3 or more.

Relaxing, interesting, all the amenities

Great scenic location away from the crowds around Waikiki, but close enough to get to the hot spots when we wished. Sea turtles swimming outside our door, interesting tidepools, a secluded cove nearby to snorkle with turtles. Steps away from the beach - we could step outside in the warm morning air and enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the waves crash against the rocks. We really appreciated having everything we could need provided by the hosts. Washer & dryer, stove, fridge, microwave, snorkeling gear, boogie boards, wi-fi, netflix, phone and even a computer. Neighborhood is quiet with stores and restaurants nearby. Beaches in Kailua are fantastic and uncrowded. I would love to stay there again!

Owner response:This review shows if you are looking for the perfect location, you have found it. If you are looking for a rental in perfect condition, you will need to look at other options. We are so close to the Ocean that it is like living on a boat. There are going to be some rust spots and other imperfections.

Not clean

Guest: Dana D. (Denver, CO)
Date of Stay: 01/21/11 Review Submitted: 10/08/11

Hello, I'm sorry to share this with you, but since you asked...We were really disappointed with the unit. the carpet was really worn and stained, the place needed a thorough scrubbing, there was 1/2 inch of dust bunnies on the lamps, ledges, etc.. The worst though was there was mold all over the ceilings on the 2nd floor, on the lampshades, etc. It was not a pleasant place to stay and I was sad to have spent our vacation $ on it. That being said, it's a great location/floor plan etc. It just needs updating, maintenance and a deeeeppp clean. And mold resistant materials installed.

Owner response:Glad you liked the location and floor plan. I hope you enjoyed the Ocean View too. Sorry you felt it was not clean. The carpet has been replaced, the lamps were replaced, and luckily because the ceiling you a refering to is vinyl it was very easy to clean that off and now we clean it regulary to make sure it does not come back. I believe if you could you see it now you would find it cleaned to you liking.

True Hawaiian Experience

Guest: Nathan (Chicago)
Date of Stay: 12/06/10 Review Submitted: 10/10/11

My wife and I stayed here for a few days and really enjoyed it. There are few times in my life that I have been as relaxed as I was here - you simply can't beat falling asleep with all the windows open and the sound of crashing surf leaving you in a state of total relaxation. The house is in a nice, very quiet neighborhood, and it's out of the way from normal tourist traffic. There is provided lawn furniture, so you are able to sit out back and absorb the sun while enjoying the ocean beating tirelessly against the coast. The kitchen is fully provisioned, and there is a TV hooked up with cable or satellite. Additionally, when we were there, there was a laptop hooked up to the internet for use along with wifi. The beds are comfortable; I would have had a hard time sleeping on the futon, but a kid would have no problem at all. Overall, the place was very cozy, and we really enjoyed our time there. IN RESPONSE TO THE PERSON WHO RATED THIS WITH 1 STAR: THIS RENTAL IS *NOT* A RESORT, NOR DID IT EVER CLAIM TO BE. If you wanted a resort, you should have stayed in one - there are many of them on Oahu! If you go into a private residence with such a critical mindset, you're not going to enjoy anything. My advice to you is to lighten up and enjoy life a little more. Yes, there are rusty parts on the house: as Oahu is a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the entire place gets bombarded with salty air, and everything on the entire island is rusty as a consequence. Almost nothing on the island, aside from resorts, is of 5-star quality - in this place, you are taking a step down from exorbitant tourist destinations and slipping into a low-profile, quiet, removed getaway. Yes, there will be some sand around the place, since it's right on the coast and gets salty, sandy air blown at it all day - isn't that why you went to Hawai'i in the first place? Again, I'll reiterate that this is NOT a five-star resort. Here, as with almost every residence in Oahu, there is no central air conditioning; however, the ocean breeze will keep you more than adequately cool. You will not be waited on; but you will love exploring the local cuisine. You will not have a pool and sandy beach right outside your door; however, the exquisite Kailua Beach is only minutes away (and the owners of this house provide you with beach equipment to take). If you are okay with experiencing life as the locals do, by all means rent this place! If you need to be pampered, go stay at a Hilton.

Owner response:We really appreciate this review as sometimes guests feel they are coming to a 5 star resort and are disappointed when they find out we are not a 5 star resort. We have a lot of offer, but when guests have an expectation that everything is going to be perfect and find a few things that are not they get disappointed. So hopefully you will keep this review in mind along with our Cons information I have posted on the homepage of our Website before you book our property. I just want every guest to have a good experience, and if your expectations are in line with what you get than you should be happier.

Kailua--good ocean viewing

Guest: Mimi (Gaffney,S.C.)
Date of Stay: 06/09/10 Review Submitted: 01/03/12

Six of us stayed here on vacation and I loved the ocean and sunset being right at us--I feel like if you don't mind being a little crowded 6 is fine--however 2 couples would have been great for a little more privacy--it was in a great neighborhood for walking and close enough to drive to different great spots fo interest--I would definitely stay here again

Owner response:Thanks for the review and good points. There are two bedrooms which are private but with 6 people in the unit 2 people will need to sleep in the living area which means not so much privacy. If it is kids it is probably not a problem, but with two adults they might not have the privacy they want. Thanks for pointing out the convenience. I have a very popular Google Map I made of our location and markers all over the island of many of the fun things to do. You can get to it from my personal Website which there is a link provided under the Calendar section on this page. We like it here because it is quiet, a small town so not a lot of traffic, yet convenient to all areas of the island including Waikiki, the airport, and the North Shore. I also list travel times to popular destinations on my personal Website.

Outstanding choice for Kailua

Guest: Love Sand Between My Toes! (Santa Cruz)
Date of Stay: 05/24/10 Review Submitted: 10/10/11

My cousin and I visited and loved our stay. This is not a plush luxurious unit which is why it is so affordable but it is a smallish, quaint, beachy shack so to speak with all that on the beach living moisture brings including imperfect paint and not so level floors. The luxury is in its fabulous location on the lava rocky beach with the fabulous ocean spray, water crashing just outside your kitchen/family room. If you're going for plush accomodations go to Waikiki but if you want local, quiet, pristine beaches and an incredible Shrimp Taco Truck without the crowds then Kailua is the spot and this is by far the best deal going!!! Very private away from the main beach area which is just a "few" minutes away. Fabulous "turtle" haven a short 2 block walk if that! The neighborhood is local and quiet. Waikiki is a only a short 23 minute drive but Kailua is truly paradise and this hideaway IS the place to stay for best price and location. My only recommendation to the owners is to change out the family room futon for a couch--comfort in mind...Aloha!

Owner response:This review is really accurate. We are not plush and luxurious. However, we are the only non-studio option that sleeps over 3 and has a direct Ocean View in Kailua. The next Ocean Front option in Kailua for families over 3 starts around $1,000 per night. Our Ocean View is direct, no roofs, no other homes, nothing but the Ocean in front of you in the morning when you wake up. I appreciate the suggestion about the couch and understand it. We tried couches here but the beds that come out of them are metal frames. Because we are right on the Ocean the beds then drip rust continually, staining everything under them. Also because the metal gets so rusty so fast they become hard to pull out. Thanks for the review, glad you enjoyed your stay.

Loved Our Stay!! Wished we were there longer!!!

Date of Stay: 05/18/10 Review Submitted: 10/13/11

We stayed here pre-cruise for four nights, and quickly realized we wished we had more time. This is not a resort, but a home in a lovely, quiet neighborhood RIGHT on the ocean. We do not like big cities or large hotels. Quiet and relaxing is what we look for. This location fit all of our needs perfectly. We had the unit facing the ocean and it was simply nothing short of amazing. I always wished I could live on the water, but it never happened. At least for these few days we got to enjoy waking up to the view and sounds of the ocean. Yes, it can take getting used to the sound of the surf. For those who need absolute quiet to fall asleep, you may want to bring some earplugs. How gorgeous it was though. This was the absolute best view we have ever had on vacation. We found Kailua to be in a perfect location. Pretty much everything we wanted to see was within 20-45 minutes away. The home itself was clean and inviting. The owners lived in the same structure, so they are right on hand if you have questions or needs. We found the kitchen more than adequate, but agree that a dishwasher would be nice. They had beach items to be shared that were in the garage. You could also use the washer and dryer. We had four adults in this unit, ages 22-67. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. I just wished we had more time to actually enjoy the setting. We were on the go so much that we didn't get to spend as much time on the property as we would have liked. However, we made good use of the time we did have and really enjoyed our stay here. It was our first VRBO rental and it was a very postive experience. Since we would have needed two hotel rooms for our group, the pricing was reasonable. With our 22 year old daughter with us, we thought she would want to stay on Waikiki and we were going to try to accommodate her wishes as this was her college graduation present. However, when I showed her the hotels, she asked if we could stay someplace more quiet and scenic. I was thrilled not to have to stay on Waikiki and we all loved this home in Kailua!!! I have to disagree with the reviewer who said the photos were "staged." We found everything looked exactly like it did in the photos. No suprises!!! We would definitely stay here again!!!

Owner response:Glad you loved your stay. For 4 adults this unit is ideal, and the next cheapest Ocean Front option for 4 adults in Kailua is $750 per night and a $500 cleaning fee plus tax, so this is really reasonable if you want to be on the Ocean. Thanks for letting others know it is not a resort. I am trying to convey that message so those who are expecting the resort experience can stay at a resort, but those looking for something as close to the Ocean as possible in Kailua can appreciate our rental. Compared to two hotel rooms in Waikiki, we are a lot quieter. The noise and commotion is the number 1 complaint I hear about Waikiki. Luckily we are just 25 minutes to Waikiki, so you can enjoy that scene when you want, but come back here to rest and sleep. Good point to about the sound of the waves. For those that need absolute silence they won’t have it here. The sound of the waves are always present. Most can get used to it very fast and it becomes like a white noise that covers up any other noise inside or outside the unit. It also depends on how big the waves are. On the big wave days you can also feel the waves lightly shaking the home when you are resting in bed.

Nice area with ocean front

Guest: mdomaz (MI)
Date of Stay: 05/18/10 Review Submitted: 06/10/10

We stayed here in May and enjoyed our time in Kailua. The house is in a very nice residential area. It did take a little getting used to falling asleep with the sound of the waves and the wind. The house has just about everything you would need for time at the beach: Beach chairs, towels, mats, cooler, etc. The house is comfortable with great views of the ocean and sunrise. The kitchen was adequately stocked, although it did not have a dishwasher :( Anything we needed we found, which was great. We liked having the two bathrooms and the computer room. I would stay here again. My biggest regret is that we didn't have more time to actually spend at the house. We were always sightseeing on Oahu. In retrospect, we probably didn't need to pay the premium for an ocean front rental since we spent so little time there. However, since we likely won't be back to Hawaii, it was probably worth it.

Beautiful ocean front setting

Date of Stay: 02/19/10 Review Submitted: 10/08/11

We love Kailua, and have vacationed there and in neighboring Kaneohe for many years. We stayed at this Kailua house for 10 days to celebrate a birthday. It was perfect for two couples, very clean and right on the ocean, but close to grocery store etc. The neighborhood is very nice, and Turtle Cove is a short walk from the house. The south end of beautiful Kailua Beach is approximately five minutes by car, and we walked it daily. Bryn is very helpful, and his description of his rental is accurate. This became our favorite vacation rental on Oahu because it is private and you can see and hear the ocean. It is a short drive to both Kailua town and to Kaneohe, and an easy drive from the airport. We highly recommend this property, and look forward to staying there again as soon as we can.

Owner response:Location, location, location, and price. If you have a family of 3 or more, the other option on the ocean is a house 3 doors down from us, and that starts at $750 per night plus a $500 cleaning fee. Other Ocean Front homes go up in price from there. So here you get the location for under $300 for a family of 3. We are not perfect, but we are a good deal if you would enjoy watching the sun rise out of the Ocean every morning and enjoy the sounds of the crashing waves in the evening.

We spent a week here on March of 2009 & had a wonderful time. The condo had everything we could possibly need. The owners were very nice as were the few neighbors we encountered. We've been on the islands many times & this was one of our most fun trips. I would definitely have returned to this rental except that we have since purchased our own place on the island.

Do not expect what you see in the oceanside unit photo's

Guest: Nonni (Anchorage, Alaska)
Date of Stay: 12/19/08 Review Submitted: 06/18/10

Driving directions were great.Owners were out of town. Upon entering the unit, stair treads had pealing paint, and were rusty. The plastic siding around the door had no molding and was flapping. Workmen appeared twice during our stay to fix the problem. I felt the unit was staged for the pictures, the appearance and its amenities were definitely did not represent what we found. The unit was clean, of poor construction, condition, and maintainence. Low quality furnishings were used. Mold was present in a number of places. Sofa/futon was not comfortable and did not have any bedding to make it up as bed. Kitchen window and sliding door did not lock properly. Steep stair treads were especially narrow and stair rail not safe for young children. Linens in the bedrooms were old and well used, and did not match No mattress pad for the queen bed, no extra sheets or blankets for any of the beds. Closet pole was held up by a rope. Twin bedroom had a leak in the ceiling light fixture and water dripped onto the floor at the foot of the beds. The upstairs bathroom had mold on the shower curtain, walls and ceiling. Pieces of plastic drapery blinds were glued around the bathroom mirror. To access the light switch next to the foot of the shower/tub one had to enter the room, lean over the toilet to turn on the light. Neighbors used the property as access to the water, privacy was lacking. I would never stay at this property again nor recommend it.

Owner response:For some reason this renter wants to put us out of business. Notice they were here 1.5 years ago so I am not even sure why they are now posting this review. The review is non-sense, and notice they never mention us being on the water or the quiet neighborhood or any of the great things about the unit and location. Here is why it is non-sense. The unit was not staged for the photos, what you see is exactly what you get. Outside stair treads had spots of rust. As we are on the Ocean we have some rust spots around screws and nails and we do repaint frequently. The stairs have been upgraded since their stay. The door is now a brand new door from Home Depot pre-hung, and there is nothing flapping around. Our futon is a standard futon purchased from a sleep store, not some discount futon. Because of that the mattress is very thick and it is an excellent futon. Bedding is provided in the closet for it. There is no mold in the unit and it is cleaned thoroughly after each guest. Sliding door and kitchen window now do lock, and all windows and the sliding door have recently been upgraded to very expensive Coastal windows which are especially made for the salt air we have in Hawaii. The price is double the price or regular vinyl windows and sliding doors, but they are worth it so we installed them. The stairs are carpeted, soft, and very easy to go up and down on. The closet poll is not held up by a rope, but we did put a rope there to give it additional support just in case, and it is inside a closed closet so this guest is really looking for issues. Extra sheets and blankets are available in the garage and you can’t miss them as they are all right there when you go to the washer and dryer. Our sheets and towels do match and we replace them regularly so they are not old or used. We have a lot of Aloha here in Hawaii so we do let the neighbors come through our walk way to get to our beach and ocean area. They really appreciate this and I would say perhaps once every 3 days one of them uses it, again it shows how far this guest is stretching to create a negative review. Some of the neighbors like to “talk story” as it is called in Hawaii and guests enjoy meeting local people who have grown up here and can tell them what places they recommend to visit. There is no lack of privacy as I would say on most days there is no one in our backyard ocean area. Only sometimes on weekends do we get the occasional fisherman.

We found the home to be tasteful and quiet and orderly and in a good location. We felt the price was one we could afford as relatively frequent visitors. And we miss the sound of the surf crashing already. Thanks again.

My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hideway Ocean side unit. My 5 year old boys made instant friends with the kids on the col de sac where the house is located. The tidepools out the back door were wonderful for exploring. I enjoyed sleeping and waking to the sound of the surf and moon and sun rise. The location is very convenient to grocery shopping and short drive to some of the best beaches. The kitchen is well supplied, there are plenty of towels, beach gear, etc. A very comfortable place to stay. Aloha!

I am home now and wanted to drop you a note saying thank you. Your rentals were everything and more. The attention to details and the turn key aspect of the house really made the week easy for us. The kitchen was completely stocked with everything we needed to cook. The beds were really comfortable. Having a washer helped keep towels for everyone. We ended up having 10 people which is a large crowd for any house.

We've got a very positive comment from our client, who stayed at your house for 4 nights. Their satisfaction research says your house was ranked as 4 (4 is the best, 1 is the worst) and they mentioned that your house was well cleaned. They also mentioned you are very nice and kind so that they could relax and make themselves at home. Thank you very much for taking care of our client very well. We had a wonderful stay in Kailua - everything was exactly as we had hoped it would be. Hideaway Mountain Side Unit was excellent basic beachside accommodation in a beautiful quiet residential area - it was well equipped with everything we needed, right down to lovell soft beach towels - and we grarefully enjoyed the air-conditioning. The unit is right on the shore, so that we could sit out of an evening and catch our breath. Swimming with the turtles at the local Turtle Cove was really special - particularly after the hurly burly of our one trip to Waikiki - and the availability of boogie boards and extra snorkells was great - allowed us to really make the most of our trips to the wonderful beaches of Oahu. A day-trip to Big Island and its volcano was a day not to be forgotten, as was the trip to The Arizona at Pearl Harbour; and Hanauma Bay was fun, although there are some other equally lovely beaches around the Island and several areas of good snorkelling. Many thanks to Bryn and Ellen for the book of ideas, routes, etc - we still managed to get lost, but had fun doing so - and the people of Oahu are very friendly and helpful. Its a long trip from UK, but worth it!

The unit was clean, well appointed, and the location is very good, a residential neighbourhood, quiet, little trafic, safe and the best part is the close proximity to the beach. Our baby grandaughter loved playing in the yard and the small tidal pools. We had a great time. Thank you.

Our family enjoyed most of all the quiet ambience of the rental and the magnificent view of the ocean. The unit was clean, and we also enjoyed the small computer room and the computer access. The rental arrangements and the directions were excellent. Our older daughter was on crutches with a recently repaired broken leg, and the downstairs fold-out sofa was perfect. The wonderful ocean breezes and the great view were marvelous. We want to return for a longer time in the future.

I just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for our stay in Kailua. We absolutely loved your place and the surrounding area. The view from your house was incredible! My only complaint is that I wish we could have stayed longer but we still had to more islands to visit and only 2 weeks to do it.

Thank you so much for the use of the Hideaway. It was very well stocked. We made use of the boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, washer & dryer, and grill. Of course we enjoyed the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. Many times we went to Turtle Cove & got to see Turtles. The DVD's and books about Hawaii helped make our decisions on what to do, since we had no prior plan. We are Air Force retired and were totally blessed when we found out the Marine Base was so close. Again our stay here we comfortable and very relaxing. We hope someday to return. Again, thank you very much. PS. Computer use was great also!!

Very good location. a little smaller than I had anticipated but with the small computer room attached to the living room that more than accomodated for the size. The neighborhood was very nice and quiet with shops/restaurants very close.

The part of my trip I would definitely recommend to others is Turtle Cove. I wish we had gone when we first got to the rental.

This was a very nice stay, right on the beach, away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. We would recommend staying in a house rental for any future travel...Much better than a Hotel.

The accommodations were very nice lots of towels and beach equipment available. Every morning we walked to Turtle Cove and watched the turtles swim around. Also, it was nice to sit on the beach drink our coffee and watch the sun rise. We really enjoyed staying on this windward side of the island and all of the peace and quiet. It was definately a wonderful peaceful vacation and Kailua beach is so beautiful.

If you're looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, this is it. The sound of the ocean waves will put you right to sleep at night, and you'll awaken with a beautiful sunrise over the ocean right outside your bedroom window. We were pleasantly surprised to have found this rental, and would definately reccommend it to anyone wanting to stay on the windward side of Oahu.
