A TRUE SANCTUARY
Once you arrive here, you won’t want to leave the property. Quiet and secluded, there are few places as private and spacious as this in Orleans. Relax on the deck with binoculars at hand and the birds will come to you. Sit quietly at dusk and watch for deer at forest’s edge. See the seagulls fly over in the blue sky, and the hawks circling above in the sunshine. Enjoy the early morning bird song as you sip coffee on the deck. Spend a quiet afternoon reading and relaxing.

THE SEA CAPTAIN'S HOUSE
The house was originally built in the 1700’s and belonged to a sea captain. Restored and modernized, it offers casual comfort and has all the conveniences you need – completely supplied updated kitchen, outdoor seating and gas grill, dining room with a table that expands to seat 10, two bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, washer/dryer, high speed internet, cable TV, and window air conditioners in the downstairs rooms. The master bedroom is on the first floor and has a queen size bed, and adjoining bathroom. One upstairs bedroom has a full-size 4-poster bed and is right next to the bathroom and the second bedroom has two twin beds. A small child’s room with an additional twin bed adjoins the second bedroom.

BIKING
The property abuts the Cape Cod Rail trail. Just ride to the end of the private road and you are on the bike trail! Ride to Nickerson State Park to enjoy more trails, continue on through Harwich past fresh water ponds, stop along the way for lunch or ice cream. In the other direction, ride to Wellfleet and catch the view from the cliffs overlooking the ocean.
Bicycle rentals are available 1/2 mile away, right in Orleans.

FUN IN THE WATER
For activities in, on, and around the water, you have easy access to a number of beaches and harbors. Skaket Beach, only five minutes away is a favorite. Walk the sand flats for miles at low tide, or play in the tidal pools (great for kids). Swim, picnic at the beach, play in the sand and at the end of the day, enjoy and applaud the beautiful sunset. For ocean surf and sand, you are 15 minutes from Nauset Beach where you can play in the waves, walk the beautiful beach for hours, or enjoy fresh seafood and other treats at the snack bar. If you prefer fresh water swimming, visit Crystal Lake, Pilgrim Lake or Baker’s pond, all within a ten-minute drive.

The many local bays, ponds, and marshes are perfect for kayaking, including the recently established water trail. You can rent kayaks and sailboats, or take lessons right in Orleans. For open water adventures, you can charter a fishing boat out of Rock Harbor, or board a whale watching boat out of Barnstable or Provincetown.

GUIDED NATURE WALKS
Enjoy interpretive nature walks and talks at the Cape Cod National Sea Shore, Wellfleet Audubon Sanctuary, and Brewster Natural History museum.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
For theater and music lovers, the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans puts on plays and musicals during the summer. Classical chamber music concerts are offered weekly in Orleans and Wellfleet. Folk concerts are held at the Chapel in the Pines in Eastham. And for baseball fans, the Cape Cod Baseball league games are played just a mile away.

This is an ideal location for sharing good times, having summer and fall adventures, and relaxing together with family and friends. Hope to see you there soon.

Historic Sea Captain's House and Nature Sanctuary

Year Purchased: 1930

Why the Owner Chose Orleans

The Sea Captain's house has been in my family for 75 years. I first summered here as a child in the 1950's, and have wonderful memories of sailing, swimming, and beach picnics with my family. Orleans is centrally located at the "elbow" of the Cape, a half hour from Provincetown and a half hour from Barnstable. The house itself is within one mile of both beach and town, yet offers a uniquely private get-away. The location is ideal and convenient for whatever activities you prefer.

The Unique Benefits at this House

One of my favorite parts of the day is stepping out onto the deck in the early morning and being greeted by birdsong, sunshine, and trees all around. Anytime you want to be on the water, it takes only 5 or 10 minutes to get to a variety of different beaches and boating areas. Although the property is convenient to shopping, when you are at the house it feels like being in a remote location.

lovely old-fashioned Cape retreat

Date of Stay: 08/01/09 Review Submitted: 03/26/11

We've stayed here more than once, and now as we ride down the private way on arrival, we feel the stresses of "real" life recede. For a place that's so convenient to beach, shopping, and birdwatching, this is the most quiet, relaxing, "far from the madding crowd" location. The house is clean and charming and is supplied with everything you need for a comfortable stay. While we use this place as a base from which to go birdwatching at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Sanctuary and other birding spots on the Cape, we find we can see lots of birds while just hanging around on the deck. We also enjoy the feeling we get from staying in a historic house. We highly recommend this place to everyone - you won't be sorry!

The Sea Captain's house was a wonderful retreat for our family. The beautiful yard was full of bird song and the kids loved having room to kick a ball around. We rode our bikes to the trail and Nickerson Park. It is also a short drive or bike ride to our favorite Skaket Beach. It is so close to Blockbuster, Hot chocolate sparrow, and other conveniences yet once you drive down the private drive (with bunnies racing along side of you) you are a world away! We had plenty of room in the kitchen, bedrooms, and livingroom, with all it's historic charm. Our kids loved the old fashioned stairs. The only negative for our family is that the vacation had to end!!
