Ah, what a peaceful retreat in a wonderful part of Cape Cod! We approached this vacation home through a long, windy path through the woods, just a minute or two from the center of Orleans. At the end, we came upon a clearing with the home overlooking a salt marsh. The home is very comfortable, well-kept and roomy. The kitchen is well stocked; and the living and dining room were great spaces and well used by us. We loved the deck and took many meals out there (many days my husband shared the view over coffee with a wild turkey who promenaded through the yard about 6 or 7 each morning). We all appreciated the TV with cable and WiFi, and a few afternoons, the AC. Although my family preferred to go to the National Seashore on beach days, there is a lovely beach a short walk away that would be wonderful for small children; we went there near dusk to see the sunset. The Cape Cod Rail Trail (bike path) is on the same road as the house, making it a perfect location to enjoy the trail and all the points of interest it includes. Abba, our favorite restaurant in Orleans, is a few minutes' walk from this home. We absolutely loved our stay and highly recommend it to you.

A hidden gem
A hidden gem
This is a fabulous quiet property - set back and hidden from the road, and only one mile to Skaket Beach. The bike trail is practically at the end of the driveway. I enjoyed dining and reading on the deck with a view of the marsh and woods (and a deer) while listening to a myriad of song birds. The house itself is fascinating with its history, old-world charm and antique nautically-themed prints and artifacts. The kitchen is well-stocked for meal preparation and the beds are quite comfortable. There is no traffic noise and there is minimal view of only one house. A true get-away! Plus, Orleans Center, with great restaurants, art galleries and shopping, is only 5 minutes away.

Stay at Sea Captain's house
Stay at Sea Captain's house
My family and I spent 5 days at this nicely secluded yet close to town property after my daughter's college graduation in Boston this May. The owner was very helpful in arranging the rental details and the property was very clean and well equipped. It was preseason so the Cape was great with low traffic yet good weather. It is only a mile to walk or ride our rental bikes (nice ones at Orleans bike shop right on the CC rail trail and less than a mile from the house) to Skaket beach on the Bay side to watch the sunset or walk the Bay at low tide and only a few miles by car to the town of Orleans ocean side beach. There are loads of great hikes nearby; Fort hill trail, Nauset marsh trail, the Audobon Wellfleet Bay sanctuary, among others within 20 minutes drive(off-season). The property is right on the Cape Cod rail trail or at least the driveway is so it is a particularly nice place for bikers. It backs up to Nanskaket creek saltmarsh and is very quiet and peaceful. The home is very old and very interesting in it's construction with wide variably widthed floor boards and somewhat steep short stepped stairs consistent with the construction of a house clearly over a hundred years old but it is very clean and charming. It is particularly a nice place for bikers and/or birders. I would definitely rent this property again.

lovely old-fashioned Cape retreat
lovely old-fashioned Cape retreat
We've stayed here more than once, and now as we ride down the private way on arrival, we feel the stresses of "real" life recede. For a place that's so convenient to beach, shopping, and birdwatching, this is the most quiet, relaxing, "far from the madding crowd" location. The house is clean and charming and is supplied with everything you need for a comfortable stay. While we use this place as a base from which to go birdwatching at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Sanctuary and other birding spots on the Cape, we find we can see lots of birds while just hanging around on the deck. We also enjoy the feeling we get from staying in a historic house. We highly recommend this place to everyone - you won't be sorry!

The Sea Captain's house was a wonderful retreat for our family. The beautiful yard was full of bird song and the kids loved having room to kick a ball around. We rode our bikes to the trail and Nickerson Park. It is also a short drive or bike ride to our favorite Skaket Beach. It is so close to Blockbuster, Hot chocolate sparrow, and other conveniences yet once you drive down the private drive (with bunnies racing along side of you) you are a world away! We had plenty of room in the kitchen, bedrooms, and livingroom, with all it's historic charm. Our kids loved the old fashioned stairs. The only negative for our family is that the vacation had to end!!

Why the Owner Chose Orleans:
The Sea Captain's house has been in my family for 75 years. I first summered here as a child in the 1950's, and have wonderful memories of sailing, swimming, and beach picnics with my family. Orleans is centrally located at the 'elbow' of the Cape, a half hour from Provincetown and a half hour from Barnstable. The house itself is within one mile of both beach and town, yet offers a uniquely private get-away. The location is ideal and convenient for whatever activities you prefer.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
One of my favorite parts of the day is stepping out onto the deck in the early morning and being greeted by birdsong, sunshine, and trees all around. Anytime you want to be on the water, it takes only 5 or 10 minutes to get to a variety of different beaches and boating areas. Although the property is convenient to shopping, when you are at the house it feels like being in a remote location.
