Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2005
My husband Marty and I live full-time in the state of Washington, but escape to our magical, tranquil La Maison Neuve as often as we can. Our love of France is exceeded only by our madness about horses. Our long term plan is to retire at La Maison Neuve and bring Sagan (pictured) and Percival with us. We hope you will love our home, its setting and the charm of the Loire Valley and the friendly and generous French people as much as we do! Venez! Karen Douglas
Why the Owner Chose Saumur
We took the plunge in 2005. We envisioned an old French farm, so we decided on restoring an 18th century farmhouse and sharing it with others as a guest house. We concentrated our search around the capitol of the horse community in France, the medieval walled city of Saumur. We couldn't have chosen a better place. The Loire Valley is the most laid-back region of France. Our French friends say that, because it's a valley, you just settle in and never want to leave. We've decided that's true, and so will you!
The Unique Benefits of this Farmhouse
La Maison Neuve is a lovely blend of 18th century French country charm and - let's face it - the modern conveniences we all want, even in a rustic setting. Our home gets rave reviews on both counts. The grounds are dotted with large rose gardens - over 350 bushes - and a dozen fruit trees (help yourself). One immediately notices the quiet and privacy. A walk through the field takes you to our pond. It's easy to spend an hour or two just watching the waterfowl. Lounge on the patio or walk a few steps further and splash in the pool... this is an easy place to kick back and "do nothing." When you're in the mood for civilization, Saumur is nearby on the shores of the Loire River. It's the home of l'Ecole Nationale d'Equestrian with its proud and ancient tradition of horsemanship. In recent years a modern centre was built, which houses the Cadre Noir horse troupe, and is home to international horse shows of all types. Not into horses? How about shopping the boutiques and antique stores, a romantic lunch or dinner in the town square or along the Loire? How many wineries you can visit in a day is a question of stamina only! The Saturday market at Saumur is indescribable. Just go! In every direction there are chateaux, wineries, caves, churches and villages to explore. The Anjou wines of the Loire are world-famous, though little known in the USA. Go a little further to Le Mans, the racing enthusiast's Mecca. Stay closer to home, and you'll find history in our own little village. Explore the 12th century church in La Lande Chasles. The Duke and Duchess live in Paris, but often come to stay in their chateau behind the church.
