Built in the early 1900s, this handsome shingle style house -- with its long porch and unparalleled access to Lake Otsego, stands on a large piece of land with a tennis court and several additional rental cottages. It has been in the Howell family for many generations and is rented out just a few weeks each summer.
The Wigwam is the perfect summer escape for a family or group of friends. While there is a lot to do in the surrounding area, you can easily spend all day enjoying what the Wigwam, itself, has to offer. Rise early and go canoeing, play a round robin on the tennis court, take a dip in the lake off the private dock, and read a book in the hammock. Then wash up in the outdoor shower, watch the sun set across the water from the covered porch, cook up a delicious dinner with local ingredients from the farmers’ market in the large modern kitchen, and relax by the fire before bed.
Originally a farmhouse built by a French-American in the 18th century, the Wigwam was bought and renovated by Henry Lansing Wardwell in approximately 1882. Wardwell gave the Wigwam to one of his five daughters in the early 1920s. The Wigwam has been passed down through generations and is currently co-owned by four siblings and their families. Renovations have been continual, most recently in the kitchen, living room, and porte cochere in 2004. The large living room provides a working fireplace, comfortable seating areas, and a gaming table. The well-lit kitchen has two refrigerators, two dishwashers, two sinks, a double oven, an eating table, and a pantry with washer and dryer. A cozy library contains a fireplace and plenty of morning light. And the beautiful dining room has a bay window facing the lake and includes a long table at which the whole gang can sit and enjoy dinner after a busy day.

The Unique Benefits at this Lake Front House
One of the many pleasures of the Wigwam is the relaxing journey to the house. After exiting the Taconic Parkway or I-87, you travel through mile after mile of rolling hills and cow country. By the time you arrive at the house, you've left the city far behind and are ready to enjoy the vast pleasures of the lake, countryside, and Cooperstown. In the summer, I time my visits so I can attend the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning. Another favorite excursion is a bike ride all the way around the lake -- a distance of about 22 miles. Besides the operas at Gimmerglass, I always go to the concerts put on by the excellent Cooperstown Chamber Music Festival.
