A swimming pond and 14 acres of woods, meadow, lawns and stone walls belong to the property and are completely private. The house, a gorgeous 2-level architectural retreat, has mountain views. It is 10 minutes from the towns of Woodstock and Phoenicia, and 2 easy hours from NYC by train, bus, or car.
The house - which has 4 entrances (deck, mudroom, porch and patio) for privacy and convenience - is in a parklike setting surrounded by wide lawns with hammocks, boulders and iron benches under birch and lilac trees. Over the rise, a path leads into a valley with a large, continually fresh stream-fed swimming pond, floating dock and a large flat rock for setting out picnics. Stone walls meander through the surrounding woods, which are great for hiking - a path leads up over Mount Tremper, where there is a Zen monastery. The quiet dead-end country road is wonderful for all ages to walk or bicycle.
There are 2 large and 2 smaller bedrooms on both the entrance level and the second floor, and bathrooms with showers on both floors (the second-floor bath also has a 6' claw-foot tub). Daybeds allow sleeping for 10 or more, and there is plenty of room for infant beds and port-a-cribs. The open-plan living area (sofas, dining, kitchen) has a wide curved ceiling that soars to two-story height, then drops to an intimate sun-hall with roof overhangs to shade the sun. Ceiling fans, awnings, and bluestone, maple, and tile floors also keep the house cool in summer, warm in winter. A long hall hung with fine art and photography leads to cozy bedrooms, a book pantry, bath and half-bath, and a stone sitting patio. A few steps down, on the far end of the house, is a sunken den/TV room with 2 sofa beds, fitness equipment, desk and phone.WiFi throughout the house.
A large side screen porch/lanai and a large front deck (with gas grill), as well as a smaller patio and a second-floor balcony, conspire with the oversized windows to blur the boundary between indoors and out. The interior is completely cozy and comfortable, well-equipped with everything you might need, and utterly relaxing, for couples, families, older and younger folks.
This property is perfect for total relaxation, mountain excursions, or spacious entertaining. Good dogs are welcome (dog bowls included)!

I moved to this area from Manhattan, and fell in love. We built this passive solar house in the foothills where hiking trails and views are spectacular. I am the owner-manager and have a separate space on the lower level reserved for times when I am in the area.
