Villa Puri Balangan is available to clients who are looking for a unique Bali experience and magnificent ocean view at an exceptional value. Mako, the Japanese owner, is a native of Tokyo, formerly a professional commercial realtor who has also lived in Bali, Singapore and Hawaii.
Mako found the villa in 2007, in disrepair, owned by an absentee employee of the World Bank. The former owner had been based in Jakarta and built the villa in the mid 1990’s. After moving to Washington DC, the owners lost touch with the villa, and were unable to afford proper care and maintenance of the property. It became a long term rental and fell into decline.
Having spent much time in other Bali villas, Mako decided to acquire the villa for the use of family, friends, and colleagues. When Mako found the villa she thought it was a tarnished diamond - perfect!
Mako acquired the villa and began a comprehensive renovation project. Juan Javonillo, one of Bali’s best architect/engineers, was hired to design and supervise the renewal. Under Juan’s guidance, the villa was completely updated, a process which took 12 months and was completed in late 2008.
The 2,000 sq meter villa is located on the highest hilltop in Jimbaran Hills above Balangan village overlooking over the Indian Ocean. A steep uphill private stone road provides access to the villa from the main highway. The mountain side of the villa is surrounded by walls and a security gate. The ocean side is open to a magnificent view of tropical green vegetation leading to the blue Indian Ocean. Fishing boats come and go from Jimbaran Bay in the distance. At night the fishing fleets look like ocean cities of light.
The bedroom suites are completely refurbished - the en-suite bathing pavilions were refitted with modern luxury fixtures, the furniture was replaced and new art was installed. Mako obsessed over detail, down to the tread count of the sheets and the color and design of the batik duvets (mauve).
A media room/office was created, with a large plasma TV, DVD, international television, ipod connectivity, Bose surround speakers and a Yamaha amp. The amp can also power a set of outdoor speakers in the living and dining pavilion. Mako’s husband supervised the renewal of this room, ensuring stabilized power is provided to keep from frying the electronics and his ever present Blackberry and Mac laptop. He also kitted the room with a fax, printer, and broadband ADSL internet. A back up generator powers the villa when Bali’s electric grid is down.
The kitchen is completely updated with European cooking equipment, local granite counters, native wood cabinets, and two refrigerators - one extra for easy access to mineral water and the local favorite Bintang beer. Tableware is handmade from Bali’s famous Jenggala Keramik Bali.
The most unique feature of the villa is the living and dining pavilion. It is spacious, airy and open to the expansive 160 degree view to the Indian Ocean. The dining table is made from solid teak and can accommodate ten diners. The decor of the living area is simple - solid wooden furniture, purchased locally, stone floors, surrounded by a gently flowing water feature that invites relaxation. The colors are not all neutral, with splashes of batik, but subtle; and almost everywhere you look are surfaces strewn with cushions inviting you to recline.
The infinity plunge pool is just steps away, large enough to swim short laps. The pool is surrounded by parasol sun loungers and couple’s sunbeds. A shaded seating area, known as a Bale, is the perfect place to take in the sunset with a relaxing cool drink.
What sets this villa apart from others is its authenticity and integrity. Mako insists the villa be essentially Balinese. The villa co-exists with the neighborhood - most of the staff are from the local village.
Villa Puri Balangan will appeal to a client that is looking for an authentic Bali experience, privacy, and relaxation. The villa is one of the few properties on Bali with an expansive ocean view. Its not a luxury hotel, nor does the villa aspire to be a hotel. Its a private villa, a home, for the exclusive use of the client. The staff are very charming and endearing to guests. There is no 24 hour room service or front desk, however special arrangements for food and beverage can be made at guest request. PT Nagisa Bali, the exclusive property manager, can arrange tours and activities upon request.
The villa now has one set of men's golf clubs free for guest use.
For a basic fee of $249/night the villa is provided with three bedrooms, media room, housekeeping, security and bath amenities. The villa provides a full time chef. A car and driver can be arranged upon request. Indonesia tax (10%) and service (5%) are added to all villa charges. A discount rate is available for stays over 30 days.
