About Annisquam - Gloucester: Gloucester, founded in 1623, is America's oldest seaport. It is the quintessential New England town. Among the many maritime activities offered by Gloucester are: world class whale-watching expeditions, lighthouse tours, stunning destination beaches, the Gloucester Schooner Adventure, the Cape Ann Historical Museum, fishing and boating opportunities in abundance, excellent seafood restaurants, and a lively nightlife rich with live music and theatre. Annisquam, the particular North-Gloucester village our cottage is located in, is known for its freshwater granite quarries, its sunsets over Ipswich Bay, and its remarkable immunity to the unpleasant clutter of industrialization. Rockport is a historical and thriving artist colony. Its local restaurants and art galleries are visited by thousands of tourists each year. Our cottage is only 1 mile from Rockport’s Halibut Point State Park, and 3 miles from its famous Bearskin Neck. We are less than 1 hour from Boston by car.

If you like Cape Ann and quiet historic villages then Annisquam, Massachusetts is for you. The Red Cottage is a perfect place from which you can access both the town beach and the town of Annisquam. The house is full of charm but has modern amenities as well. It comfortably sleeps a bunch of folks and has neat stairways and hidden rooms. It worked great for a mixed bunch of adults and kids. One of the nicest features is the almost completely private yard. In the summer with all the leaves on the trees, you can barely see the neighbors. There is a nice deck on the back adjacent to a big yard which is great for a frisbee or whiffle ball. On the other side of the house there is a lovely shaded seating area where we spent a good deal of time on our vacation last summer. The town beach in Annisquam is small but great for kids. Although it dissapears almost entirely at high tide, anytime in between it is flat with little surf and shallow water. It provides great views of boats coming in and out of the Annisquam river as well. The beach is a bit of a long walk ( maybe 3/4 of a mile) so we generally take a car and shuttle people over to the beach entrance and then just park one car there. During the week there is generally no problem with parking. On weekends you have to be a little more flexible. The town center is a great place to walk around. The area has been occupied since about 1623 so there is lots of history. Check out the footbridge where you can jump off at high tide if you are brave and the marina restaurant where you can have breakfast on the deck overlooking the harbor. If you venture out of Annisquam, the rest of Cape Ann has much to offer. Rockport is a tourest mecca and has lots of great shops on Bearskin Neck. Gloucester is also a great place to visit. It has a wonderful old main street with lots of shops and good restaurants. Early every August they have a great sidewalk fair where they close main street to traffic and all sorts of vendors and food kiosks set up on the street. As you head back to Annisquam on route 127, keep an eye out for the signs for Halibut Point State Park. It is an old quarry right out at the point and is a great day trip. Just past that turnoff is the Lobster Cove Restaurant. It is a great place to stop in and see the sun set with a fresh boiled lobster in your lap. My family has been vacationing in Annisquam on and off for 30 years and we are convinced it is one of the hidden jewels of the Massachusetts coastline. Enjoy!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.
