Whitehead Light Station is the definition of a unique and wonderful vacation accommodation. On 11 acres of the 90 acre Whitehead Island, the recently restored Light Station housed the families who tended the lighthouse before it was automated in 1982. Whitehead Light Station is remote but comfortable with a private bath in each of 7 bedrooms, electricity, new modern fully-equipped kitchen (with a 6-burner, 2-oven, griddle-equipped Garland stove), and comfortable common areas, including 2 sitting rooms, a dining room, and a library. No TVs, internet, or telephones--just splendid isolation. Included in the cost is the service of a beautiful wooden lobster boat in which the captain can take small groups on trips to explore neighboring islands and provide access to the attractions of the mainland (15 minutes from Rockland and 45 minutes from Camden).

Guests set their own schedule and have the run of the 11-acre site, which includes wonderful spruce woods and a spectacular granite shoreline. There's plenty of boats sailing by, eagles, ospreys, and seals to watch. Lobsters purchased from local lobstermen have been cooked on the rocks for years (they taste better that way). You can even go swimming off the new float (only for the hardy). There is no better place to curl up with a book, relax and unplug.
Additional services can be accommodated by request including a private chef, yoga classes, massage, etc.

A working lighthouse has been on this site since Thomas Jefferson authorized the first one in 1803. The current light tower is still an operating aid to navigation. And now, the fully renovated Light Station is the perfect place for a vacation, retreat, or reunion with plenty of room for up to 14 people.

7 BR Lightkeeper's House on Pristine Island in Penobscot Bay

Year Purchased: 1996

Why the Owner Chose St. George

Pine Island Camp acquired Whitehead Light Station in 1996, through the Maine Lights Program, which helped the Coast Guard shed property it no longer needed. It was a perfect match, as generations of campers had made trips to another part of Whitehead Island for more than 50 years.

The Unique Benefits at this House

There is nothing that can compare with time spent on an island in the ocean. And Whitehead is a very special island at the western edge of Penobscot Bay, one of the favorite sailing areas of the east coast. The Light Station provides civilized comfort in the splendid isolation of a rocky island in the Atlantic.

Owner's Map of St. George

Whitehead Light Station is owned by Pine Island Camp, a not-for-profit Maine boys camp founded in 1902.

A overwhelming spectacular property

What a spectacular time we had at Whitehead!! Three families (six adults, five kids) -- every one of us, to a person, loved, loved, loved the incredible setting, everything we did, and, of course, Giovanni, who made sure every step of the way that we had a safe, fun, and deeply satisfying time. Whitehead is so beautiful, and the home so lovingly renovated --- it is SUCH a special place. We all feel privileged to have spent time there and I think I speak for everyone when I say we all hope that we will have the opportunity to spend time there again. Many thanks to all of you for making our annual three-family vacation a great success!! We can suggest for families, family reunion...or anyone looking for a spot to host retreat/class for yoga, meditation, painting, beer, knitting, cooking, etc.). The best that Maine has to offer!

Memorable---You will never forget this place

August 2011: Disregard published date on this listing. We were 11 people---3 couples and 5 kids ages 5 to 14---and spent 6 August nights at this beautiful light station, recently and loving restored and in fabulous condition. All of us, to a person, only wishes we had spent at least 12 nights instead of just 6. This is a classic, mystical and transcendent coastal Maine getaway. It's about as pure an experience of a place as you can get. A caretaker---ours was the gracious and fun Giovanni, a terrific guy and a great help---escorts you to and from the island on a (also lovingly restored) lobster fisherman's boat. You bring your groceries, etc., and retire to the island: woods, rocky coast, incredible, incredible sunrises, the whole thing. The lighthouse is still operational and you can climb the stairs and have a glorious view of a major entryway to the Maine coast on Penobscot Bay. You sleep in the adjacent house, which has the ideal layout for a large or exteneded family or group experience. We are 3 families who like to getaway once a year to someplace special. This was absolutely ideal and we would do it again in a heartbeat. There is terrible cell/mobile reception and no wifi, or so it would seem (I'm not sure about this but you might be able to get wifi, for a fee, as sort of punishment for choosing to violate the godliness of the place by maintaing the interweb connection). I suppose it's not going to be perfect for everyone. Dinner is cooked in the well-appointed industrial kitchen by YOU; later have s'mores on the boulders while looking at tidal pools during sunset. Bring lots to read, request a yoga instructor (every morning, once, whatever) after breakfast. Hike around a nearby island---make other kinds of day trips, to Camden, etc. Don't plan on lots of swimming, even during the warmest months. Sometimes cold water is just a matter of getting used to. Well, that's not the case here as there's no getting used to the water. My brave 8-yr-old daughter and I jumped in and got our immediately. It was cold. So when you're through on the coast and want to go swimming, get a lake house somewhere in western Maine. The perfect complement. Then you'll be ready for the fall.

An Island disconnect

Guest: Cam (NY)
Date of Stay: 08/19/11 Review Submitted: 01/13/12

The moment you leave the mainland, you can feel the stress of everyday life depart. On the island, one can imagine a seafarers life or perhaps a pirates playground. Circumnavigate the island, walk the many trails through the forest, relax on the rocks. Savor the simplicity. We watched beautiful sunsets while sipping cocktails and had bountifully delicious meals served to us. We explored other islands with the help of our fearless Captain Gigi. Leave your cell phone and computer home. Chances are they won't work. But thats just the point....disconnect from the mainland.
