This is a beautiful vacation ranch home with a rustic country atmosphere. Located as a central hub for visiting numerous national parks like Zion, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell, Coral Pink Sand dunes, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Kanab is also home to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary; the world's largest animal sanctuary.
The house is located within walking distance to downtown Kanab, yet the property borders National Public Land—our back yard is the beautiful Vermillian Cliffs. This two-story ranch house features three bedrooms and 2 ½ bathrooms, living and dining room, full size kitchen with breakfast bar. There is a wood-burning stove and central heating, evaporative cooling downstairs and air conditioner units in each upstairs bedroom in the summer , pine wood interior, with a spacious wooden deck for relaxing or entertaining. All of the necessities for family living are included in the furnishings: a complete kitchen, two queen size beds and a single bed upstairs, a luxury king size bed in the downstairs master bedroom, satellite TV, wireless internet, telephone and sleeps 6-7 people. The home is quiet, secluded and a convenient walking distance to downtown restaurants and shops. Other vacation rental properties in the area simply don't measure up to what you will experience at our property. This is truly a unique place and undeniably just about the nicest piece of property in Kanab. With the Vermillian cliffs as a backdrop, our guests never want to leave the spacious deck, private location, and comment that the house is truly a breath of fresh air.

We chose Red Horse Ranch for its proximity to national parks, it's local character and distance from big tourist concentrations, the beauty of its setting and because it looked like a great place to cook up a meal and enjoy the company of our daughter and her boyfriend and his parents. We were 100% satisfied on all counts. The owner was totally responsive and helpful in making our reservation. The caretaker in Kanab had the place looking great. Our stay was problem-free. This is a real small family ranch home, with corrals and barns. There were no animals in them during our stay, unless you count the many rabbits and birds we saw from the deck each day. The kitchen is large, well-stocked with pans, utensils, dishes and condiments and everything needed. There are two modest-sized grocery stores in town with all you need, but if you want more specialized items, you might stop in St. George (coming from Vegas). The open space living room has big comfortable chairs for recovering from long hikes and you have a choice of dining room or deck for meals. Wireless internet worked well. The master bedroom was spacious and had its own bath. The two upstairs bedrooms, were very comfortable and shared a bath. We all slept like rocks and woke up feeling ready for another active day. The ranch backs right up to a butte that lights up at sunset. It's well worth a short scramble up, if only half way, to see far and wide over the valley and the huge plateau and distant mesas to the south. I wish we'd had more time to explore the local trails. Kanab is a great small town, with a compact downtown and a good mix of restaurants and stores serving both tourists and the local rural economy, making the ranch a great combination of isolation, beauty and convenience. It was an hour to Zion, two to Bryce and two to the Grand Canyon's North Rim and we visited all of them. The national park's North Rim was not yet open for the season, but some folks at the Forest Service gave us a map of beautiful Kaibab National Forest, which is also on the north rim, and we used 30 miles of dirt roads to reach Crazy Jug Point for an off-the-grid experience of the Canyon. I left that map in the very complete collection of maps and info in the house. Drives of an hour or two were rewarding just to see the endless beauty and variety of landscapes unfold. If I had to choose just one park, it would be Bryce for the utter strangeness and beauty of its formations.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children.

We were so excited when we arrived to find this beautiful home to be all that was described in reviews. The house was warm and comfy with everything you could need from satellite to internet, washer and dryer, and all the little things you forgot to pickup at the store before you got there. The location was perfect! We had already planned on visiting the national parks listed and Best Friends, and we made it to all, very convenient to each one for a day of hiking, or sightseeing. Hiking right out the backdoor was a treat, you could head out at sunrise for an early morning hike to start your day, and the full moon rising over the barn was gorgeous. The walk to town was just a couple of blocks. When we weren't grilling out, we tried some of the local restaurants including the ice cream shop. The shop owners were all very friendly and helpful, you could find most anything you needed. Can you tell? We really enjoyed our stay, would love to go back and highly recommend the Red Horse Ranch.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Ahhh, what a nice review with all the little details that let everyone know that Red Horse Ranch is all that we claim it to be. Having people enjoy our home really makes it home.

Had a wonderful time staying at the Red Horse Ranch a few weeks ago with my wife and two children (6 and 4). We were looking for a place a bit off the beaten path and also close (relatively speaking) to Zion and Bryce. The house worked out perfect for us. Although close to the center of town, it's in a quiet neighborhood and it borders right up against the plateau that you can see in the picture. Behind the house is a hiking trail that winds around the red rocks. We enjoyed watching the sun rise over the plateau to the east from the kitchen window (chilly mornings)...and then enjoyed sitting out on the deck and watching the sunset over the plateau to the west. When you step in the house, you realize it really is more of a home. It's not 2010 modern with stainless steel everywhere, nor is it the Ritz-Carlton, but it's very comfortable and I really felt I was staying at a friend's house rather than at a vacation rental. It was clean on arrival and we had no trouble with any of the appliances. The house was loaded with maps and vacation guides and books, I brought 3 books on the trip and ended up reading none of them as I lost myself in a few I found at Carla's house. There was a swingset in back which was loved by our kids. Kanab is an interesting town, much, much sleepier (to our surprise) than Moab where we've stayed before. It was nice not having to deal with the crowds, and certainly much less touristy. The visitor center at Zion was about an hour away, the visitor center at Bryce was about 90 minutes away, and Page was about 75 min away. Would have loved to seen the North Rim of the Grand Canyon but the road won't open until May. The concern I always have with using VRBO is that you are dealing with an unknown quantity (ie the owner), but after reading the reviews here I felt that we'd probably be OK, and we certainly were. Carla was helpful from the get-go, answering all our questions and giving us some helpful hints. Our deposit was returned promptly. Bottom line--great time, great rental, great rate as well for what you get. We'd come back in a second.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with young children.
Owner response: We do feel that our guests are visiting us even though we are not there. Most of our guests understand that and appreciate our humble home and its country peace. These guests were some of our best; leaving the place in wonderful condition for the next people to arrive. The secret of Kanab's ideal location and its sleepy quiet feel is still mostly a secret. Unlike so many other pristine places that are now overun with crowds, Kanab remains a haven perched on the bank of a quiet, creek with a wonderful view of the Best Show on Earth.

This is a great place: close to shopping and restaurants, but with a real rural feel to it. There's a mountain in the backyard! We stayed here with our dog, heading out every day to explore Grand Staircase/Escalente. As a couple, the main floor had everything we needed. For a larger group, there are two additional bedrooms and another bath upstairs. Carla is a very caring landlord, confirming all details, and checking in to be sure everything was as it should be. Quite a lovely place to stay, reasonably priced, and we'd recommend it highly!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

If you are looking for a beautiful, inviting and relaxing place to stay, you have found it at the Red Horse Ranch. Secluded, yet close to town, this property is for you. The house was spotless and comfortable, well stocked & we felt at home. Carla, the property owner was so friendly & accommodating, and quick to respond to emails & questions. She gave friendly advice & directions. Carla's mother's beautiful artwork adorned the walls and the decor was tastefully Utah. We enjoyed the deck and the view of the Vermillion Cliffs and the night sky. We only stayed 4 nights, but I wish we would have stayed longer. We flew to Nevada, went to the West & South Rim of the Grand Canyon prior to driving to Kanab. It is definitely the place to stay if you want to see the North Rim (which I found more beautiful than the South), Glen Canyon, Zion, Bryce & Grand Staircase. We rappelled, hiked and had a wonderful time enjoying the scenery which is so different from Pennsylvania. This was to be my bucket-list vacation, but there are so many trails and canyons to hike that we will definitely be repeat customers. This property was the best location to visit all of these areas, centrally located and with so much to do, even around town. We rappelled at Water Canyon, hiked Angels Landing and the Narrows at Zion, Navajo & Peekaboo loops at Bryce, Willis Creek Narrows & Bull Valley Gorge at Grand Staircase Escalante and also hiked at Lees Ferry in Glen Canyon. We tried for 3 days to get a permit to the Wave. Our number was called, but only 1 permit was available, so we had to pass. We will definitely return to this beautiful home, not only because of the location, but the friendliness & ease in communicating with Carla, the property owner. Thank you, Carla, for sharing your beautiful home with us. We will forever remember your kindness.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: I just can't say it enough! We get the best guests! Love vacation rentaling!

A great private location in the heart of all that southern Utah and northern Arizona has to offer. Owner is easy to work with and very accommodating to those hesitant to lease from a private party. Carla went out of her way to make everything comfortable. The house is warm and welcoming. Everything is just as stated and pictured. From this Kanab location we were able to take day trips to Zion, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, and Bryce. Watching husband climb the Vermillion Cliffs in the back yard up to the "K" was a treat. In early October we experienced mostly warm sunshine...though the last day it snowed in Bryce! The gift of a cd and native rock was a nice touch. Thank you Carla for sharing your home!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: We absolutely love sharing our home and appreciate that our guests seem so grateful to be able to use our little ranch at the base of the "K" on the hill. You can hike for days right from our doorstep if you are so inclined. I don't know how we do it but we always get the most considerate guests!

This two story home was clean and comfortable. The large kitchen was well stocked and included a large refrigerator/freezer. We did our own cooking and shopped for groceries in Kanab. We found everything we needed as it is a small town. The home was wonderful in a beautiful setting. The highlight was the large deck with a table and grill. The sunrise and sunsets were amazing and the stars were so bright without city lights to interfere. The "rock" close to the deck reflected the light of the sun and stars. A beautiful relaxing place, very quiet. We sat outside on the deck until late at night. The bedrooms are large with comfortable mattress. The furniture is very nice with TV and CD player. We didn't use the TV as we went to Zion and Bryce hiking during the day. WiFi worked great, no problems with getting on line. Our reservations and communication with the owner was good. Very prompt replies to questions. I would highly recommend this home. We had a great vacation.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for this wonderful review. I will have to sit down and relax next time I am back working on the house and notice the reflection of the stars and moon on the rock work near the deck! One of our favorite tennants who left the house spotless when they departed..thank you. Our TV isn't a flat screen and some say we ought to put in a sleek flat screen, but we figure most of our guests, like you, don't come to watch TV! The view outside our kitchen door is just fantastic. But that's Utah..."Best Show on Earth".

We had identified the area around Kanab as a great base for exploring some of the major National Parks in the area: Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon North Rim, but also the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM), one of the largest and diverse parks in the US. After travelling through Utah (Bonneville Flats, Salt Lake City, Canyonlands NP, Arches NP) and the west of Colorado (Mesa Verde NP) for almost 10 days we were looking for a nice place to relax, still being able to do day trips to major NP. Kanab is definitely the best spot for this. The town offers everything you need and Carla's Red Horse Ranch is a beautiful, quiet refuge close to town, even the GSENM Visitor Center is in walking distance. The house a well-equipped for 6 to 7 people, has a lot of stuff to explore, especially for kids, just the horses are missing ;-) Carla is a great person to deal with; we had a lot of good conversations long before the trip. Everything is professionally taken care of and also thanks to Pam, her property manager, to quickly resolve the tiny issue we had during our stay. Here is just an advice for people who never visited the south of Utah during late August / early September. Utah gets a lot of Thunderstorms, basically every day starting around noon time, sometimes later in the afternoon. Start your activities early in the morning, try to be back around lunchtime and enjoy the thunderstorms rolling in and beautiful colored landscape in the afternoon safely from the ranch and watch the colorful rainbows and the sunset from the deck afterwards. The GSENM area provides more than just the major national parks. There are plenty of gulches / slot canyons, the Paria Townsite, Lake Powell for swimming and/or boating and tons of excellent hikes. Due to the thunderstorms many of the dirt roads a getting washed out or even flushed away, so bringing a 4WD with high clearance (or at least a car with high clearance and no fear, a shovel and a handful of strong family members) is certainly a good advice, if you want to explore some of the less common attractions. Check with the visitor center, they provide latest updates on road and slot canyon closures. We are definitely planning on going coming back some day.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Don't you just love great reviews like this one! So much good advice! It is true that the thunderstorms are supposed to come in the afternoons in July and August but lately, it hasn't been on schedule. Utah has had a drought for the last 10 years and now you never know if you will get these storms or not. This year was more typical, and we got some great storms while Jens and his family were there. They were kind enough to send us pictures of the rainbow and also of thier family on the deck. By the way, Red Horse Ranch should perhaps be named Rainbow Ranch as Rainbows seem to be attracted to that spot. I have seen the end of the Rainbow right on the corner of our property many times and it does glow like a pot of gold!

We weren't sure when we booked it whether we'd be in a good spot to tour the major parks of southern Utah and the Grand Canyon North Rim, but the house proved to be the perfect base. It is close to Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon North Rim, as well as many other great spots for hiking and touring in the area (Antelope Canyon, Toadstools, The Wave, Lake Powell etc.). Even the other parks/places (Canyonlands, Arches, Goblin Valley and Moab) are within reach depending on how far you want to drive. Kanab itself is a nice, quiet little town with some good spots to eat when you're too tired from the hikes to cook dinner. As for the house, it's in a beautiful, quiet little spot and is well equipped for all your needs. Carla has a gem of a home and it is great quality for the price paid. We'd return and we'd recommend it to anyone.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.
Owner response: The secret is out! Kanab is the best location in the Southwest! It's charm almost outdoes its location. Red Horse Ranch in our eyes, is the best peice of property in town too I do need to work on getting information out about all the great things to do in the area. This review is super helpful in telling travelers about the positively perfect location we have. It is all about Location! Location Location Location!

Awesome place to stay, central to Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, etc. Kanab is an enjoyable small town. The Red Horse Ranch offers views of the red cliffs in the back yard as well as south all the way to Kaibab National Forest 35 miles south. Quiet, quite private. Enjoyed the prairie falcons in the yard in the AM, the cottontails and jack rabbits in the PM. Easy walk to town for groceries or dinner. Enjoyed grilling on the back porch. Don't miss the rock gift shop in Kanab - they make a lot of their own sandstone sculpture and have great prices.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: Yes the rock shop and also Frontier Movie Town are great spots to hit in town. I miss walking into town and the view of the Kiabab!

About the owner: This is my dream horse ranch and we plan to return some day but for now, my family and I have sold the horses and moved to Japan. We plan to come back to Kanab to retire and enjoy hiking and exploring Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Lake Powell, Las Vegas, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Coral Pink Sandunes, and the list goes on and on. You can't find a better place to vacation, but for now we are educating our teenage son by traveling the world and seeing as much as possible. We hope you will enjoy seeing the southwest using our home as a base to travel from. Happy vacationing and explore everything you can!
Why the Owner Chose Kanab:
This is the perfect location. There is so much beauty to see and the small town atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. Our Backyard is part of the beautiful Vermillian cliffs and there is no better place to ride horses or hike.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
From our house you can easily walk into downtown Kanab yet you feel like you are living in the country. From our property you can hike the cliffs, the golf course is in walking distance and we have only two neighbors which are secluded from view. Kanab is a western themed small town that is famous for all the western movies and TV shows that were filmed here-It has been nick-named 'Little Hollywood'. Six famous national parks are within one and half hour drive from our house. The location is perfect and the scenery is spectacular.
