A Perfect Little Gem of a House on a Perfect Little Island
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Shelter Island
We fell in love with Shelter Island because it is the same distance from the city as The Hamptons, but has a completely different personality--there is no trendiness, no hip parties, no high-end shopping or general ostentatious displays of wealth--just beautiful unspoiled nature, peace and quiet. Plus, a full third of the island is a nature preserve!
The Unique Benefits at this House
As city dwellers, we relish the absolute silence of the night-time on Shelter Island, and the clear skies full of bright stars. We love being able to walk to the beach with the dog, or walk into town for lunch or a cocktail.
Amazing BBQ and Seafood restaurant--not to be missed. Right around the corner from the house! Also a fresh seafood market.
Awesome place to get healthy food and bath/home products. They also have a cafe in back where you can get sandwiches and soups.
Small-town-style market, little bit of everything, deli in the back. Walking/biking distance from the house.
Owner's Map of Shelter Island
I am an illustrator and cartoonist, my husband is a veterinarian. We have a dog named Oly that we found living on the streets in a little town in Portugal (Odiaxere) where we were vacationing, and two cats, named Mister and Bessie.

This home in just perfect...shown well in the pictures....well maintained and stocked, exceptionally clean and just wonderful for those with four legged "kids"! We had a wonderful week on the island and it's beaches.............our city dogs learned how to be country hounds real quick. Perfect weather in November even had us using the hammock and grill dailym Commander Cody's around the corner is a must for casual delishious food and AMAZING fish market. For a big night out........try Vine Street Cafe.....One of the top 5 meals of our lives! We will be back for a longer stay next time!

My husband and I had a wonderful time here and plan to return in the fall. Great amenities and loved the style and design of the house. The owners put a lot of time and thought into the remodel. Nice finishes. Kitchen is fully stocked. Loved the Roku so much we bought one! It is so peaceful and quiet you may never want to leave the property, except for dinner at Vine Street Cafe, (Planet Bliss is unfortunately closed) a bike ride or walk around the beautiful island. Loved it!!!! Perfect getaway from the city.

Joan, just got back from a weekend stay at your cottage. As usual, everything was perfect. Each time I stay here I discover new dining spots and beaches to stroll on. The Eagle Deli is wonderful! I also found a place called All Dogged Up that has all sorts of great dog stuff and doggie day care or house sits for when we want to do a wine tour on the North Fork. Wades Beach is still a favorite for walkig my Greyhounds. Everyone in the area is so freindly. The fenced in yard is such a PLUS for us with dogs that love to play outside. I would love to know what kind of mattress and pillows you have in the smaller bedroom......I slept like I was on a cloud! Thanks again for giving us a little bit of heaven Jan , (hounds, Booker and Bella)

We had high expectations for this Shelter Island location, and we were not disappointed. The house was nicely maintained and very comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing week with our little chihuahua, Maggie. We enjoyed walking and biking around the island, and shopping right around the corner for groceries and other vacation goodies. Maggie loved running around the fenced yard and sunning in the hammock with us. We will certainly look forward to our next visit!

We enjoyed our time here immensely. Since we didn't have much time this year for a vacation, the fact that we were able to stay here for just a long weekend was so appreciated and convenient. The house was cozy, clean, and aesthetically pleasing without the clutter. The location was super peaceful and we also loved the convenience of the fenced in yard where our boston terrier had a chance to stretch his legs which he normally doesn't get to do as an apartment dog. The proximity to Wades Beach is a plus too. Thank you Joan!

This quintessential cottage is an absolutely perfect getaway. It is equipped with everything one needs for a Summer "get away." We cycled all over Shelter Island and really got to know it. We also used a Vespa Scooter to enhance the travel experience around the Island. We found that we never wanted to go off Shelter Island during our 3 week stay. We bought everything to cook right on the Island:local fish markets, Readings Market and organic vegetables from the neighbors!! We always wanted to come back to the cottage and the hammock as it is so peaceful there. The house is set way back from the road and you can't hear anything but nature!!

We loved our stay! Joan was so helpful and accomodating. The house had everything we needed, even bikes, beach chairs and a beach umbrella. The modern kitchen was great. We were close to everything. Our chihuahuas loved the fenced in yard. Everyone enjoyed the hammock! We can't wait to come back next year.

Our family of two adults and two 15 year-old sons enjoyed our recent visit. The house is thoughtfully furnished for visitors with beach chairs, towels, two good touring bikes, kitchen supplies, etc. It is ideal for two adults and 1 child; two convertible living room couches are also available. The area is tranquil and pleasant, and the house is very well located. The owner was responsive and accommodating. We recommend the property and Shelter Island.
