One note of caution however: The faux-leather covers are easily punctured and/or scratched by cat claws, and some smaller dog claws (Trust us--we learned the hard way!). For this reason, we cannot allow any cats on the premises whatsoever, and ask that you please either keep dogs off the furniture entirely, or cover the furniture with a blanket before allowing them up, to avoid damage. Thank you!

A Perfect Little Gem of a House on a Perfect Little Island

Year Purchased: 2007

Why the Owner Chose Shelter Island

We fell in love with Shelter Island because it is the same distance from the city as The Hamptons, but has a completely different personality--there is no trendiness, no hip parties, no high-end shopping or general ostentatious displays of wealth--just beautiful unspoiled nature, peace and quiet. Plus, a full third of the island is a nature preserve!

The Unique Benefits at this House

As city dwellers, we relish the absolute silence of the night-time on Shelter Island, and the clear skies full of bright stars. We love being able to walk to the beach with the dog, or walk into town for lunch or a cocktail.

A
Wades Beach

Closest Beach to house (1 mile south, on Midway Rd.)

B
Commander Cody's

Amazing BBQ and Seafood restaurant--not to be missed. Right around the corner from the house! Also a fresh seafood market.

Owner's Map of Shelter Island

I am an illustrator and cartoonist, my husband is a veterinarian. We have a dog named Oly that we found living on the streets in a little town in Portugal (Odiaxere) where we were vacationing, and two cats, named Mister and Bessie.

    • We enjoyed our time here immensely. Since we didn't have much time this year for a vacation, the fact that we were able to stay here for just a long weekend was so appreciated and convenient. The house was cozy, clean, and aesthetically pleasing without the clutter. The location was super peaceful and we also loved the convenience of the fenced in yard where our boston terrier had a chance to stretch his legs which he normally doesn't get to do as an apartment dog. The proximity to Wades Beach is a plus too. Thank you Joan!

    • This quintessential cottage is an absolutely perfect getaway. It is equipped with everything one needs for a Summer "get away." We cycled all over Shelter Island and really got to know it. We also used a Vespa Scooter to enhance the travel experience around the Island. We found that we never wanted to go off Shelter Island during our 3 week stay. We bought everything to cook right on the Island:local fish markets, Readings Market and organic vegetables from the neighbors!! We always wanted to come back to the cottage and the hammock as it is so peaceful there. The house is set way back from the road and you can't hear anything but nature!!

    • We loved our stay! Joan was so helpful and accomodating. The house had everything we needed, even bikes, beach chairs and a beach umbrella. The modern kitchen was great. We were close to everything. Our chihuahuas loved the fenced in yard. Everyone enjoyed the hammock! We can't wait to come back next year.

    • Our family of two adults and two 15 year-old sons enjoyed our recent visit. The house is thoughtfully furnished for visitors with beach chairs, towels, two good touring bikes, kitchen supplies, etc. It is ideal for two adults and 1 child; two convertible living room couches are also available. The area is tranquil and pleasant, and the house is very well located. The owner was responsive and accommodating. We recommend the property and Shelter Island.

    • We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend in Shelter Island and having this fabulous vacation rental as home base was the highlight of our experience. From the latest amenities to the modern yet cozy décor, it truly felt like we were in a home away from home. In advance of our arrival, the owners were kind enough to provide an enthusiastic description of their beautiful home and recommendations of the island's attractions, and boy were they spot on - everything in fact exceeded our expectations. We are very much looking forward to our next stay later this summer!!!

    • We had a great stay over Memorial Day weekend, thank you so much Joan! The place was perfect, the bikes enabled us to get some exercise, and the seafood place around the corner was delicious! Looking forward to coming back again soon...

    • We had a wonderful time, even though the weather was not the best. Exectly the type of place we wanted. Not huge, but lovingly decorated. House had evetyhing we needed, clean and warm. The yard allowed us to relax and let our city-dog run "wild" without warry of him running away.
