Looking for THE unique Puerto Viejo experience? Welcome to Mono En La Cara. With a Feng Shui inspired “Baqua” design, this octagonal, open concept 2-story home is reason enough to spend your next vacation on the beautiful South Caribe coast! Perfectly situated in a quiet area just outside of town on Playa Negra (black sand beach) the large spacious, beautifully tiled octagonal first floor encompasses the living room, the dining area and the kitchen/Tiki Bar. From everywhere inside there are beautiful views of the property from the large, screened windows that surround you on all sides, providing direct contact with the tropical vegetation.
Extending behind the artistic spiral staircase leading to the 2nd floor is a very large, fully tiled, open bathroom complete with a large tiled shower and features a bidet, a rather unique amenity in these parts.
At the top of the stairs, you enter 5/8ths of the second floor octagon which contains the main sleeping area. Complete with two double size beds, this large bedroom features cathedral ceilings in an open-air environment with plenty of windows and fresh Caribbean breezes. Adjoining this space is a separate, private bedroom, also equipped with a double bed.
The other 3/8 of the upper floor (remember this is an octagon) is a huge outdoor deck made with beautiful local hardwoods with glorious views to the Caribbean. This deck also continues as a walkway around the sides of the house. This deck is the perfect morning spot for bird watching and breakfast. Then, after a day of exploring the beaches and the wonders of the Talamanca area, it’s also the perfect place to relax watching the sunset with an early evening drink (or that fantastic fresh fish in spicy coconut sauce that you bought from a vendor at the beach) and then planning the rest of your evening. Ah, Pura Vida!
Mono En La Cara is the perfect getaway for families, couples or small group of friends looking for a truly exotic vacation adventure.

Our party of 4 stayed at Mono En La Cara for 2 weeks in July and were extremely comfortable. Our caretaker was both helpful and attentive to our needs and questions. We enjoyed the close proximity to the beach and short walk to town, although the location itself is quiet and private. The home is well equipped with towels, sheets, hammocks, guide books, etc and the kitchen had eveything we needed to make breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, cocktails and more. We enjoyed shopping at the local markets and preparing meals, but you MUST try the local fare. The food in Puerto Viejo is some of the best we've had. The beaches are amazing and the locals very friendly and accomodating. We did an amazing zip-line adventure, rented bikes, took surf lessons and relaxed! We were there during the rainy season, but it really only kept us in one full day, otherwise when it did rain, it would rain hard in the morning and burn off by early afternoon. The only down side to this was the open air concept upstairs vs. the mosquitos, but we managed. One rainy morning we took advantage of the unique washing machine and did a few loads of laundry...it turned out being one of the best lounge days we had on our trip. I feel like the property is well represented by the information given and the pictures, although the yard and surrounding foliage is much taller and lush now than in the pictures. We were very pleased and would visit Mono En La Cara again in the future. Thanks also to Mike and Miriam who were extremely helpful in answering questions and making recommendations in and around town. Pura Vida!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

Our stay here was incredible. Not only was the house beautiful, very large, and full of conveniences such as bottled water, towels, hammocks, etc, but the city was the BEST choice. No worry of the looong monsoon season that hits the other side of the island, and on top of that, in all the cities we saw along the way Puerto Viejo had the most to offer. Just a few blocks away from the "downtown" if you will of the city, there was a plethora of amazing restaurants, the wonderful open air market with all the Costa Rican specialty items for reasonable prices, and gorgeous beaches all right there. The caretaker of the house was extremely helpful and available (there was even a phone in the house if we needed to call her.) She set us up with all the best tour guides, etc. Advice: Don't do much booking ahead of time. Almost everything is cheaper if you do it there. At the airport in San Jose, we bargained with the rental car places until we got an excellent deal with full coverage and additional drivers. We also had an amazing trip zip lining for $50, snorkeling for $25, 3 course meals for $12. It is very reasonable. Just read signs and ask questions. People are more than willing to help you out with anything you need. The only reason I didn't put 5 stars is the lack of AC. Spoiled Americans, we are definitely accustomed to it, and it is very rare in Costa Rica. Nice restaurants don't have it. But there were ceiling fans in every room and several great standing fans too. For the size and convenience of this house, the price can't be beat. Thanks again Mike and Miriam!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

The best of all worlds. Surfing, tarpon fishing out of Manzanillo, night life, live music, relaxing on the beach, near by nature walks Cahuita. Wildlife everywhere, we saw monkeys, sloths, coati, elephant beatles. It is also a birder watchers paradise. Just stand in the yard having your morning coffee you could see half a dozen different types of humming birds alone. And if it rains? It is a large & comfy place to kick back relax.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My husband and I loved our stay here. We agree that the second-story deck is reason alone to rent the place. We spent long hours there birdwatching, reading in the hammocks, nursing cocktails, and listening to the surf. Kids will love the octagon shape of the house; parents will love having a room of their own with the kids' beds nearby; couples traveling with friends will appreciate having enough room for everyone, to allow for socializing and private time. If that's not enough, there's the location, across the street from Playa Negra. We loved strolling on the black-sand beach in the moonlight or rolling out of bed for a dip first thing in the morning, when the beach was still deserted. We also liked that the house is somewhat secluded from the hubbub of Puerto Viejo, but when we wanted to head out on the town for the evening, we were just a short walk away. It really felt like the best of both worlds—in that sense but also in the sense that you're near a variety of beautiful beaches, with the jungle right behind you, and yet so close to a town with so much bustle and character. Then there's Miriam and Mike. You won't find hosts any more informative, enthusiastic, or pleasant to be around. We would stay here again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

We only had five days here - I wish we could have doubled that! In addition to Playa Negra, Puerto Viejo has several other beaches - each one a little different - and many other local attractions like the Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. The guided tour of the rainforest was terrific, with beautiful flora and fauna for a photographer like me. We enjoyed the local restaurants (no chains here!) especially thanks to recommendations from Mike and Miriam. I’m a vegetarian and had no trouble finding plenty of options. The locals also are very friendly and hospitable. People encouraged me to use my limited Spanish, but most are bilingual anyway. This is a such a relaxed setting, ideal for a vacation, I’d recommend it to anyone. Just don’t forget to use the hammocks on that spacious deck pictured on this website: they’re perfect for an afternoon siesta.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

We stayed at the house for 9 days. We have three school aged kids, and all five of us fit very comfortably! This is a unique house that is only a two minute walk from playa negra- the best beach in Costa Rica. A great experience is listening to the downpours at night while laying in the hammocks on the deck. Miriam and Mike are very helpful in helping you to plan your trip, and the property managers, Rene and Susana, are great about checking in and being available for anything you need. I would definitely recommend this home to anyone traveling to PV- especially if you have a family!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 10/10

The deck on this octogonal house is reason alone to rent this property. We spent hours watching the wildlife and listening to the pounding surf. The house is unique in style and well appointed. This is a terrific spot to soak up Puerto Viejo. It's not too far from the action, yet located in a secluded area.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 10/10
