Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + Loft + Office, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
This luxury home offers an alternative from the beach-front experience. Custom cabinetry, maple floors, mahogany closets, a three-in-one lava fireplace--just begins to describe the details that went into the building of this home. The beauty of upcountry life in Hawaii is a well-kept secret and not as easy to experience as most beach or suburban rentals. Located on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the architect-designed house is situated on a 10-acre parcel of land formerly part of the Parker Ranch. High (4000+feet), dry, and cool, you can enjoy the vistas from the slate-tiled lanai and enjoy true peace and serenity. Mornings are usually bright and sunny and clear nights show you why the observatories are located atop Mauna Kea--the stars are impressive! This summer one could see with binoculars the moons of jupiter and witness the meteorite showers in mid-August. In any season, on moonlit nights you can watch the moonrise above the mountain.
If you tire of the quiet surroundings and the 360 degrees of Big Island views, beaches are not too far away as well as all the other possibilities in the Kohala district. Hike (or get a ride by 4WD or horse) down the Waipio Valley, visit the galleries of Havi Town and Kapa'u, horseback or ATV on the Parker Ranch. The observatories on Mauna Kea, Hilo and Volcanoes National Park are also easily accessible from Saddle Road and are highly suggested must-sees.

Why the Owner Chose Kamuela (Waimea)
Hawaii offers the best of what we love of both the East and the West. People are kind, considerate and welcoming, and keeping harmony is important. Being modest and letting people praise you when you deserve it is valued more than pushing your opinion through. For us, the place is idyllically situated between the two countries (yes, the mainland is a different place) and offers a climate completely opposite to what we had in Japan--lots of space, cool summer evenings, sunny days, and best of all--no mosquitoes. There are also plenty of animals and their babies--horses, goats, sheep, and a number of game and wild birds, some endemic to Hawaii. Here, our city children learned how "big" nature really is and they respect its power and beauty. We also enjoy that fact that we can choose a different climate or atmosphere if we like; the ranch is centrally located to beaches and other areas of interest.
The Unique Benefits at this House
We travelled all over the island looking for the perfect place and kept coming back to this one. The house itself is beautifully designed and fits the landscape perfectly. Ten acres around the house gives you lots of room to relax, enjoy the incredible vistas of all the mountain ranges and the ocean views. Hiking, walking, or biking can be done from the house. Access to Saddle Road, Volcanoes National Park, and the Mauna Kea Observatory is also easy from our location. Most people know Hawaii for the beaches and that is great, but to experience life on the ranch lands is a special thing indeed. Living up on high gives one a whole new perspective of the beautiful place that Captain Cook first visited.
Owner's Map of Kamuela (Waimea)
Our family moved from the East Coast to Japan nearly twenty years ago and we travel back and forth frequently so our kids live comfortably between two cultures. Because most of the time has been spent in a big city with no space, lots of noise, and convenience stores on every corner, whenever there is a good weekend, we have tried to get out to the country to experience nature. There, we enjoy cycling, hiking, or visiting some new place. Exploration is something that never gets boring, so when we go to Hawaii, we do the same only more!
