Luxurious house, situated two hours from Kerry, one hour from Galway, 40 mins from The Burren, 45 minutes from Shannon Airport and 500m from the beautiful, award winning village of Mountshannon, this property is truly a special find - ideal for touring the southwest of Ireland as well as being just 2.5 hours from Dublin.

The local area is well known for golfing, fishing, hiking and water-sports, and hosts one of the most successful Arts festivals in Ireland. Music is available in local pubs in season, and there are several good restaurants nearby.

The house is an architect designed high quality detached home - set on 1.5 acres , with 180 degree views over Lough Derg and the Tipperary Hills. It is designed to take full advantage of the views, and is a warm home - timber framed with zoned central heating and wood burning stoves . The ceilings are higher than standard, giving a bright airy feel to the home. Accommodation comprises the following:

A large kitchen/living-room/dining-room is at the centre of this home, with southerly aspect, and magnificent views of the lake. This space has a sound system with built in speakers . A three metre square roof window makes this a particularly bright space. The room is adjoined by a living-room with TV - which also has a wood-burning stove. The two bedrooms at the west of the property are en-suite with patios, whilst the two to the east share a Diner-style living-room, with a bathroom. There is also a double bedroom with magnificent views over the lake and mountains.

Outside, there are extensive patio and decked areas - ideal for lounging or dining al fresco. The home is set on 1.5 acres of well-kept gardens, and has several vegetable plots and a greenhouse which guests are welcome to use in season. Many guests have cancelled touring plans, preferring to use the space for a stay-cation - especially those who are enjoying family reunion visits.

A full catering service is available - please ask for details.

The East Clare way walking route ( easy to moderate) passes by, and the area is a particularly restful place, with forests, bog-land walks and beautiful unspoiled views over the mountains and lake. Attractions include Holy Island - accessible by a short boat trip available from the harbor - it is one of the earliest Monastic settlements in Ireland (500AD).

There are several restaurants and local pubs full of atmosphere and charm.

Access to garden herbs and vegetables (in season) is provided for guests. The calendar is updated regularly, but the property is sometimes provisionally booked by friends/family, so always contact us for cancellations.

We - all ten of us - stayed at this fantastic house in September 2012. It is difficult to exaggerate just how nice the space was for a family get-together. Firstly, the view is something - and it is visible from all the living area, and some of the bedrooms. The photos do not do it justice at all. Stunning to sit and watch the sun rise over the lake and the hills. The house is well laid out, with the living area at the centre and the bedrooms in separate areas - one space for the teenagers ( but the rooms could equally suit a couple with small children), one great room with stunning views, and two others - all with their own charm and privacy and some with access to the deck to enjoy breakfast there. The house is well equipped - generous amounts of plates and cups, knives and forks, even a knife sharpener which we have never seen in a rental home before. The living space is suitable for many more than ten people - more like a small hotel, especially with the deck extending it. The barbeque could have catered for much more too - everything about this place was generous. The village at the bottom of the hill was cute. We ate out in the village twice - once in the pizzeria/wine bar and once in the restaurant in the centre of the village. Both were great experiences. We ordered takeaway pizza also and that worked well with the garden salads we prepared ourselves. We planned to do a lot of day trips, and did about half because we just liked hanging around the house. The Cliffs of Moher cruise was something we will never forget, and we also enjoyed an evening at a nearby village with great music and dinner. Some of our party played golf locally, and some went on a fishing trip and visited a monastic Island. We had a day in Galway and the teenagers also loved Lahinch for surfing. Overall, we were more than happy with our trip -our family are determined to do this again -it was just awesome. Olivia B. Ontario

Recently, our group of 9 friends and family had the good fortune to stay is this lovely and restful property. Not only was the home and surroundings beautiful, our "hostess" was helpful, friendly, and a real pleasure to get to know. Hopefully, we will be able to return some day for more wonderful Irish memories.

We've rented a few different homes on VRBO, and this house has to be our favorite. It far surpassed our expectations. It's even more impressive in person than in the photos. Six of us spent a week touring the sights (Cliffs of Moher were spectacular and The Burren Perfumery is not to be missed). But as wonderful as the sights were, coming home to this house was so comforting and luxurious. The views were great, the gathering space was comfortable, the big dining room table perfect for lingering meals. Our hostess was beyond helpful, greeting us with fresh-baked scones and coffee and was always available via e-mail for questions or suggestions. The house's golf clubs were good, and my husband put them to use three times during our visit -- nice not to have to lug clubs all the way from the USA! We made fresh salads from the garden nightly and pricked herbs for our meals every day. The house and the hostess are winners.

We are a large family, nine in all, and are always looking for great properties like this one to use as a base for exploring. We could not have been happier with our experience at this beautiful home. Booking: This was made very easy via e-mail conversations, availability discussions, review of the terms and conditions and payment through PayPal. Communication: During the time leading up to our trip we received several e-mails with instructions, suggestions about what to do, helpful hints about the property and particulars about the surrounding area. Day of Arrival: We were greeted by our host in a warm fashion including a snack and tea, shown around the property with final instructions and left to our sightseeing. During our stay: The house and the views from the house cannot be adequately captured by this review or pictures. The scene from the backyard is almost surreal with a view of the lake and surrounding countryside. There was a large field where we played soccer, fresh vegetables in the garden and a gas grill that we used several times. Inside, the bedrooms were very comfortable, the house large, but cozy - plenty of room for our large group to gather for evening fun as well as eating together. The laundry room also came in handy and was more than adequate to keep up with our needs. Groceries were available in nearby Scariff (about 7KM) or large stores were available a little further away. Surrounding Area: There was a lot we wanted to see and the house was a great base to visit sites such as Galway/Connemara, The Cliffs of Moher, Limerick, Shannon and the Burren. We even spent a day and went to Kilarney and the Ring of Kerry while there. While we spent a lot of time sightseeing on our trip, we often talked about how we could have been just as comfortable "staying in" at the house for the entire week. Anyway you do it, it is a very enjoyable experience. On our last day, our host came to see us off and take a picture of the family. We are very grateful we were able to spend our vacation at such a well located and scenic home. We would highly recommend it!

Owner response: It is just so nice to see big families enjoy the place so much...Fishing on the lake has become a great favorite, with guide, equipment and boat rental services springing up and prices coming down and down - especially as the dollar strengthens against the euro. The addition of a local market on Saturdays brings high quality organic fare right to our doorstep.

We are a family of six that includes two pre-teen kids, two grandparents over 70 and two adults and this house was fantastic. There are seperate spaces for each group including seperate bathrooms and living areas. The outdoor spaces are more like an extension of the house as they are right out the back door and it is like you have stepped into a picture in a meadow with a wonderful lake at the bottom of the hill. Grilling outside on a wonderful patio with garden vegetables at your disposal, how great is that. We traveled to all the famous sightseeing locations, a different area of Ireland every day for five days and still had plenty of time to relax in the town of Mountshannon and go pike fishing on the lake for a day. It was a perfect location for Waterford, Galway, Cliffs of Moher and The Burren. We visited Bunratty Castle and many other attractions while still returning to the house to cook dinner and have a relaxing evening. There is nothing more to say other than we were sad to leave, we would love to come back soon and do it all again.

Owner response: So glad to welcome such a nice family. And thanks for your information on the new fishing company - it is great to know this facility is available at such reasonable prices and such high quality. Combined with our accommodation offering, it has the potential to provide an amazing experience, especially in the season from Oct to March when trout will be available...

My family of 4 generations stayed at this Mountshannon house for a week in June. The views from the deck of the house overlooking Lough Derg were fantastic. The 5 bedrooms were each very comfortable. The kitchen and living areas were large enough to accommodate 8 adults and an infant with plenty of room. The owner could not have been nicer. She had a lovely spread of breakfast treats waiting for us on our arrival and was very informative on things to do and see in the area. The location of the house was ideal for the day trips (Blarney Castle, Bunratty Castle, Cliffs of Moher, and the Burren) we took. We also enjoyed the village of Mountshannon. The Cupain Cafe for dinner and the Village Inn for lunch were quite enjoyable. On Wednesday night the music at the Keanes pub and on Friday night at the Village Inn pub were so much fun. I would highly recommend staying here.

Owner response: Glad you had such a good time Laura - your family were amazing!

This home and its owner are absolute delights. The home is warm and exceedingly comfortable with all the creature comforts and a wonderful view of Lough Derg. Day trips to Galway, Ennis, the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, Limerick and many other locations are easily made. We were met with warm scones fresh out of the oven upon arrival and greatly enjoyed our informative conversations with the landlord throughout our stay. We couldn't recommend this beautiful Mountshannon home more highly!

Our extended family had a lovely time in this beautiful house. The views, ambiance, hospitality are unequaled. Thanks for the scones and tea on arrival, and all the assistance. This vacation was ideal, and we loved 'coming home' to the house. Our week was awesome! Too bad we have to go back to work and reality...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mountshannon and the great home overlooking Lough Derg. It was clean, spacious and well appointed. The outdoor decks that surround the house allowed our family (8 adults and one 2 year old) all the room we needed and the view was extraordinary. The bedrooms and bathrooms were comfortable- though we didn't spend too much time sleeping- the living, kitchen and dining areas were large enough for all of us to gather and enjoy each others company. The location near Scarriff, Killaloe and Portumna made for easy shopping and evenings at a pub. Will recommend the house to everyone thinking about a visit to central Ireland.

Owner response: It was great to see the extended family have such a good time!

Even with rain, a stay in this house is something I will not forget. Big and nice house, the only thing is you need to get used to it to avoid getting lost! The oven was warm with complimentary homemade bakery when we arrived. The landlord is really friendly. To find the location of the house, just follow the indications using google street, they even came in this quiet area.

Mountshannon is one of the prettiest villages in Ireland, once won the coveted overall Tidy Towns prize, and always features at the top end of this National competition for beautiful places. Overlooking the harbour, and enjoying a wonderful vista of Lough Derg lake and the Tipperary Hills, the setting is spectacular. Great walking, cycling, sailing, fishing, golf and other leisure activities are available locally. One of the oldest monastic settlements in Ireland is on our doorstep, and the village also has excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants. The white-tailed eagles nest in Bushy Island which is visible from the property, so bring your binoculars to spot this rare bird nesting in Ireland for the first time in 150 years.

Enjoy the spectacular views while enjoying fresh salads from the garden on the patio. Watch the boats come and go in the harbour below the dining area. Walk the East Clare Way in the hills on your doorstep. Take a boat trip to Holy Island and experience 1,500 years of history. Take several day trips to The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, The Alwee Caves, Galway, Bunratty Castle.
