The pictures here on HomeAway do not do the house justice. Newly remodeled, the home is warm and inviting inside with comfortable beds, sofas, and chairs. The house is set on a small mountain lake that is perfect for kayaking (we brought our own) and paddle boating (one provided at the house). Even though there isn't a beach area, our four-year-old was perfectly happy swimming off the dock. The surrounding area is full of great excursions. Waterfalls, hiking, historic sites are all within a 20-30 minute drive. We particularly liked Chau Ram County Park, which is just east of Westminster. The owners have placed a guestbook in the house that has directions to all of the area offerings - a nice touch. The owner was a delight to deal with and the house was ready to go when we got there. We hope to come back again!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway.

The house was truly perfect for 3 couples; beautifully decorated with many rooms/porches for escape, if wanted. Loved being on the small lake and the beautiful foliage in October. I did ask the owner to recommend nearby restaurants but did not get a reply. The house is located at least 30/40 minutes between Clemson and Highlands w/restaurants. We were there primarily to hike and see waterfalls and we were blessed with a perfect weekend of beautiful weather. We plan to go there again next Fall. Only one thing to improve...if one likes to read in bed, the lighting not the greatest.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

We 4 had a very good time. Ate in and the kitchen had everything we needed. The House was roomy enough for us all and the covered porch, deck on Lake, comfort in the house was all very well done. The furnishings where cabin cozy and very up scale for a lake home. We would defiantly go back to this home again. Paddling on the lake was also something we could not get enough of. Truly had no complaints. Owners are very specific about care with notes placed around home. Tells me they really care about maintaining good quality.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This was our second visit to the property, and all was as good as the first and BETTER! It is obvious the owners have put a LOT of thought and care into the house. Very clean, quiet, functional, and most of all, comfortable... you get the feeling of being "at home". Location and access is perfect, and the nice touch of providing local area information from waterfalls to restaurants is another indication of the well-thought-out plan of making one's visit a great experience. We plan to return in the fall or winter to stay more than a weekend so we can take in all there is of the house, lake and area. Thank you for sharing your house/home in such a specatular way!!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

We rented the cabin for a weekend getaway and it was truly the perfect weekend! The cabin is absolutely gorgeous and had every amenity imaginable. We especially enjoyed sitting on the porch, fishing, grilling and utilizing the beautiful kitchen. We had no cell phone service unless we went to the nearby Dollar General which was a perfect excuse to "lose" the cell phone and truly get away from everything. I hope to return very soon and am already recommending this gorgeous place to my friends. Thank you!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

Loved Everything about it . My favorite i guess was the Lake view balcony , but another favorite was the convience to all the best trout fishing streams around only a few miles away. Dear Shellie and Todd, We had a wonderful time at your property! What a fabulous place to get away but still be close to everything within 10 minutes! The property is BEAUTIFUL (the pictures don't do it justice), the view was just breathtaking. The home was large enough for us and our two teens, plenty of places to go when we wanted to spread out with plenty of room to spare. Love the fact the home is close to Greenville (great shopping), Highlands, NC (great shopping), Columbia (great zoo), and Gatlinburg, TN (fabulous aquarium). The best part of the property is the outdoor wrap around porch and the brand new dock. The kids went swimming in the lake, took the row boat out, took walks...what a relaxing week! Everything was EXTREMELY clean and the home is up to date and beautifully decorated! Thanks again and we may be back (permanently :)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.
Owner response: I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay and appreciate your compliments. I hope that you were able to explore the area fully in the hopes of possibly moving in the near future.

I have wonderful childhood memories of visiting the area around Mountain Rest, and my wife and I wanted our 4-year old twins to share some of those experiences. We chose this house based on the glowing reviews and beautiful pictures on this site, and we could not have been more pleased. My parents joined us for a long weekend in September 2011, and we're all hoping to make it an annual event. I have rarely felt more at peace than sitting on the beautiful wraparound deck with a cup of coffee, watching the morning mist rise off the lake. We enjoyed fishing off the dock, picking wildflowers on our walk around the lake, exploring Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel, Isaqueena Falls and the Walhalla Fish Hatchery, and eating boiled peanuts from the gas station down the road and fried chicken from the steakhouse in Walhalla. I cannot recommend this house enough for a peaceful, restorative weekend away. It was perfect for all three generations of our family.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Thank you so much for sharing your vacation home with us. We had a wonderful time and found many things to do. We found waterfalls, went rafting, hiking, swimming...just to name a few. I am very picky about the places I stay and I couldn't find one thing to complain about. It was beautiful inside and out and VERY clean and comfortable. Would definately love to come again!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: My husband and I have three children and purchased this home as a place to getaway on the weekends with them and potentially be a place we may want to retire some day. We love retreating here on the weekends for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, reading a good book, shopping in Highlands, NC., taking our boat to Lake Jocassee during the summer and just being together as a family.
Why the Owner Chose Mountain Rest:
We purchased this home in 2005 as a second home. We completely renovated the property, installing all new flooring, new appliances, new lighting, and furnished it to be a relaxing and enjoyable place to retreat to with our children on the weekends and during the summer months. We love to kayak, canoe, fish, and just relax as a family and want this home to be a place where our friends and family can do the same. Our hope is that you will find your time here to be relaxing and allow you to reconnect with your family while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Canoe and kayaks available upon request. Kayak instruction is available from qualified instructor upon request and based upon availability.
