Due to the calm water conditions, extensive coral reef, and thriving underwater life, Kealakekua Bay offers some of the best snorkeling and diving in Hawaii.

Another spot to snorkel around the rocks and shell beach. Also a great spot to picnic and take a swim in the Ocean, a short walk from the house.

  • F

Captain Cook Monument View on map

Be sure to see Hawaiian Sea Turtles in the shallow waters near the Monument. Expect to take a lot of pictures and prepare yourself by bringing an underwater camera if possible. The water could not be clearer and the visibility is often reported beyond 100 feet. Captain James Cook and his ships, the Resolution and Discovery, entered the sheltered waters of Kealakekua Bay (Pathway of the God) on the morning of Jan 17, 1779, during the height of a local religious festival. Thinking Cook was a returning God, the Hawaiians welcomed and honored him. Strife followed, and the Hawaiians realized that Cook and his crew were not immortal. In the end, Cook was surrounded and killed at this very spot.

  • G

    Scuba Diving View on map

With the superb underwater visibility, you will see a vibrant coral reef the wraps around the cove and hundreds of colorful Hawaiian fish. You will see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, Parrot Fish, Trumpet Fish, large schools of Goat Fish, Squirrel Fish, Angel Fish, Crown of Thorns, Moray Eels, plenty of Trigger Fish, Butterfly Fish, Blue Tail Wrasse, and much more. If you are SCUBA diving, we recommend following the reef to the south, away from the monument. Either follow the drop-off down past 80 ft., or stay on top of the reef at about 30 ft. Either way, you will see an abundance of tropical coral and beautiful fish.

Captain Cook Monument Hiking Trail View on map

Approximate Location of Trail Head. Length 3.6 Miles Round Trip. The beginning of the trail is marked by overgrown elephant grasses, soon giving way to dry land shrubs. You will be able to get the first glimpse of the Kealakekua Bay at this point, with steep cliffs above the Bay. Hidden in some of the caves here, there are the bones of ancient Hawaiian royals. Soon, you will reach the first Vista, from where you will get a clear view of the Bay. Along the trail, you will reach the edge of the old lava flow. The trail then steeply descends to the sea, through a rocky path and intersects the Old Government Road. The trail will run through the Hawaiian Villiage of Kaawaloa. The trail ends at the monument

St. Benedict's Catholic Church View on map

84-5140 Painted Church Rd Captain Cook,HI,96704 This small Catholic wooden church stands not far from Puuhonua o Honauhau National Historic Park and is well worth turning off Road 160 to look at, not only because of its lovely position but because of the original decoration of the interior. The Belgian priest, Jean Berchman Velghe, who built it at the turn of the century, used whitewash for painting the walls and added pictures of various biblical scenes and Hawaiian motifs which reveal an astonishing talent. Behind the altar he created an image in perspective based on Burgos Cathedral in Spain. The church columns are painted with Hawaiian motifs such as flowers and palms.

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau - City of Refuge View on map

Step back in time to a sanctuary of Hawaii’s past where traditional Hawaiian lifestyle is preserved. Ancient temples and ki’i (wooden images) whisper stories from the past. This place provided refuge to Hawaiians who came here. Today, the park continues as a sanctuary for visitors seeking a peaceful place and as a safe haven for all of the native wildlife living here. In old Hawaii, if you had broken a law the penalty was death. Perhaps you had entered into an area that was reserved for only the chiefs, or had eaten forbidden food. Laws, or kapu, governed every aspect of Hawaiian society. Your only option for survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the nearest puuhonua, or place of refuge.

  • M

    Two Step View on map

The City of Refuge is one of the top snorkeling spots on the Big Island. The waters are usually clear and it averages about 20ft in depth. Often you will see pods of dolphins swimming close to shore as I did when I went there. The waters are usually calm with small waves and a very easy place to go in called Two Step. It is at the end of a finger of lava and easy to see because you will see lots of people getting in there. If you snorkel off the the left, you will see lots of underwater coral and lava structures. In the middle, you will see a sandy patch about 40 ft deep with the word ALOHA spelled out on the bottom and to the right, you will see it quickly drop down to over 100 ft.

    Napo'opo View on map

This mostly rocky beach is located at the southern end of the beautiful Kealakekua Bay. This bay is where Captain James Cook first landed in Hawaii. The Hiki'au Heiau is also located here. This heiau was dedicated to the harvest god, Lono. When Captain Cook arrived here, the Hawaiians were celebrating the harvest god and initially thought the large ships were islands and the sailors were gods. It was here that the first Christian service was held by the Cook landing party.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: We live in California 1/2 of the year and in Hawaii the balance of the year. We came across some property that was too good to pass up and we recently finished a spec home at Hokulia four miles north of the Kealakekua Bay house. We have since moved into the new home. We love the Pagoda House and have many great memories. We are happy when our guests have such a great time in our house and share such nice comments either online or in a personal email.

Why the Owner Chose Kealakekua Bay:
The home was well built and located across the street from the Bay but needed work. After two remodels, the place is first class, all appliances are top of the line, everything has been updated and refreshed. It is located where Hawaiian Royalty lived and the Kona coffee grows. With friends and family living in the area, we visited Kealakekua Bay often. We fell in love with the peacefulness, the birds, the greenery, the slower Hawaiian lifestyle. It is such a tranquil place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. When the house came on the market, we saw such potential with the location and the property. While we have moved north of the Bay to a new golf community, we are sad to leave, but we get to come back and enjoy the property between our valued guests whenever we want.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
The key benefit to this home is your ability to relax and enjoy Hawaii, while being offered so many options of things to do. One of the very unique features of the Pagoda House is the traditional Hawaiian architecture where nearly every place that normally would have a window, has been built with high quality screens, allowing a unique experience that so many people comment on and enjoy! There is a beautiful garden to enjoy, you can use the outdoor shower (a unique experience all by itself) and enjoy the sunset from the balcony. There is a BBQ next to the pool and you can enjoy the evening ambiance under the light of the burning Tiki torches. If you need a break from relaxation, there are a number of outdoor activities within walking distance. You can Kayak, Snorkel, Swim (with the dolphins), Hike or 'rock-hop' around the various ocean side state parks. There are plenty of cultural, historical and even religious monuments, places of interest and ancient ruins nearby that will educate you on the history of Hawaii, the significance of Kealakekua Bay and what life was like in old Hawaii.
