Beatiful lake, strange VRBO experience - Summer 2011

Our family has rented through VRBO for years and this was the first time we ever had anything but a good "as promised" experience. It was not the cabin itself, though it does need to be updated and some of the amenities promised were broken or spotty. Also, we can say nothing but great things about Big Birch lake. It was perfect for all sorts of water recreation and a lovely MN location. We rented from the manager a speed boat and a pontoon boat which we all really enjoyed. The beach and dock area is nice, though a little weedy. We rented the whole house plus the A-frame by the beach for our family and guests. Unfortunately the problem started before we even arrived. On the drive up to Grey Eagle we got a call from the owner telling us he was in a family crisis and needed a place to stay. We felt bad for him and agreed to let him have the A-frame for a night while he pulled himself together, This began several days of trouble. The A-frame does not have plumbing and to reach it you must walk around the house and across the front beach area. This made us all uncomfortable not knowing when this strange man was going to walk by as we played on the beach or when he might walk through the house. After one day we realized the situation was not acceptable and requested that we have the A-frame back, especially after a 11 PM banging on all the doors of the house (scared us all!) as the owner was wanting a flashlight. Several more strange incidents happened and we became nervous about the situation. The manager did not want to get involved and told us he had been fired by the owner and was scared to come on the property. At that point we felt like we needed to leave but stuck it out for one more day. The owner finally agreed to leave and we ended up staying and having a good time. Eventually the manager seemed to be rehired and we were able to call him with several issues with the house. The manager seemed nice and tried to be helpful but I would not rent from this owner again especially with the very high rate we paid and no refund on loss of A-frame use, not to mention the overall craziness of the first days.
