Paradise Island Getaway - Driftwood

Driftwood is a marvelous vacation home on a unique and totally beautiful island. The house is located on a lovely quiet street two blocks from the ocean on the east and two blocks from the golf complex on the west.
The owners of Driftwood bought the house in 2004 and live there for four winter months. They have done extensive remodeling and refurbishing which includes new appliances, a new air conditioning/heating system, new windows and sliding doors, another bathroom was added, the furnishings are all new and the kitchen/dining room area is newly tiled.
The home layout is wonderful for several couples or extended families.
There are two large master bedrooms suites on either end of the house, a comfortable living room with modern updated furniture, the spacious dining room is perfect for families with a large table that easily seats 8, and a two car attached carport with an adjacent patio makes a very convenient outdoor gathering area for guests and friends.
For the convenience of the guests there are 5 TVs, 5 DVD/VCRs, unlimited free long distance to the US and wireless internet access. To help insure cleanliness and to prevent allergic reactions neither smoking nor pets are allowed in the house.
The island is perhaps best known for its use as an exclusive get away for the super rich during the “Gilded Age” of America. In 1886 the Jekyll Island Club was established as a destination for the families of millionaires including the Rockefellers, Astors, Vanderbilts. Morgans, Pulitzers, and Macys who used this paradise as a most exclusive retreat.
Now the paradise is a state park, frozen in time. The cottages of the millionaires and their hotel are preserved in the Historic District plus a museum and some wonderful shops all for your enjoyment. Enjoy, too, the eight miles of unspoiled beach guarded by the dunes on this barrier island.
Enjoy the twenty miles plus of bike paths that encircle the island. Enjoy the fantastic golf courses, three challenging 18 hole courses in beautifully natural settings with no houses or condos on them. There is also the original nine hole Walter Travis designed course, a links style layout built by the millionaires.
You will love the limited development of the island which is by law kept 65% forever wild. There are no signal lights, no traffic tie ups and no malls (only a few small shops, restaurants and stores).
Play at the water park or the 36 hole miniature golf course, visit the new Georgia Sea Turtle Center and the ruins of the historic Horton House the colonial home of the island’s first English settler.
Summer weeks, May through August always book first, many people come then for the beach, the sea breeze and summer fun.
For others their choice time of the year is the fall, when the sky is blue, the ocean warm, the weather more temperate and the island free of vacationing school children. You will find Driftwood is a great place to stay as you enjoy life to the fullest on “Georgia’s Jewel”

"Your home is comfortable, Spacious and so well equipped for a relaxing vacation. We enjoyed many lovely dinners in your dining room. When we ventured out at night we always looked forward to seeing deer in your yard when we returned. As usual we loved the golf, the beach and to he visits to the big hotel. Glynn is such a preety street. You are truly blessed to have such a lovely home."Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: My wife and I "discovered" Jekyll island in 1996, visiting my son and his family while they were stationed in Fort Stewart,Ga. we went on a day trip to the beach on Jekyll Island and immediately fell in love with this park. We vacationed here annually until we retired in 2002. In 2004 we bought Drifwood and come here every winter for 4 months. We return to the Corning, NY area for the remainder of the year and rent out Driftwood. Our guests all love the house and the vacation life on Jekyll. Parker-Kaufman Realty does a wonderful job for us of supervising the maintenance and rental of Driftwood while we are away.
