Location: Katavati, Sifnos, Cyclades, Greek Islands, Greece, Europe
Accommodations: Farm House Compound, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 10)
Ideal for 8 to 10 persons that love walking, reading, and privacy!
This is a housing compound consisting of four buildings. It is situated on a slope facing the island's highest point at Profitis Ilias, and sits on the edge of the hamlet of Eleimonas-Katavati, on a hill above the main village of Apollonia. Sifnos in general has preserved the vernacular architectural style of the Cycladic islands with very few concessions to modern influences.
Each building is a Cycladic cube built of local schist stone, found on site, some of it whitewashed and some left in its original color. They are connected by stone-paved yards, with pergolas and plants (hibiscus, lemon trees, herbs) and surrounded by shaded verandas, a thrashing floor and a garden planted with herbs, vines, fruit, olive and pine trees. Originally a farm house with stables, it was rebuilt in 2005 as a vacation house for a large family intended to provide ample space to adults and children allowing both for privacy and shared spaces. The house combines traditional style and materials with the level of functionality and comfort expected of a holiday home.
Nevertheless, if you are looking for spa-like holidays with car parking outside the front door, don’t continue reading.
The largest of the 4 buildings (the old Barn House) has 3 bedrooms and can easily accommodate 4 adults or alternatively, a couple with 4 children. There is one shared bathroom, a small kitchen and sitting area with a clavinova for the musically gifted. The larger room has a platform bed that can easily accommodate a wide double bed and a small fireplace on the one side (not very useful in the summer). The two other bedrooms each have a wide single bed and are next to a shaded veranda a few steps above the garden. Each bedroom has ample closet space.
The second building (the Master Bedroom) is a large 60 m2 bedroom (wide queen size bed) with en suite bathroom (including washing machine). There are closets and bookshelves and a good desk for writing, plus telephone.
On the other side of the property, there is a smaller building (the Guest House) consisting of a bedroom with a queen size bed and chest of drawers and its own bathroom up a few steps. There are dramatic views of the valley towards the port of Kamares from the narrow window opposite the bed.
The fourth building (the Common Building), the only one which is not a restoration of an original structure, sits in the center of the property and is a large sitting room with a spacious fully-equipped kitchen attached. There are sofas, a dining table seating 8 and a library with a collection of travel literature, mostly in English. The veranda, with director’s chairs, recliners and side table, right outside the sitting room provides a panoramic view of the island interior (the hills of Agios Antreas, Profitis Ilias and the valleys of Kamares and Kortsoudi) is a wonderful place to sit and watch the setting sun (and for those so inclined to have an early evening sip of ouzo) and the brilliant constellations of the Greek summer nights.
There is parking available about 200 m away from the house, down a village path (partially paved) lined with oregano and caper plants.
Distances:
Most of the inhabitants of Sifnos live in the island center where a number of villages cluster together around the central village of Apollonia. Walking distance to the main village with shops and bars etc 10mn downhill, or by car 5mn. The swimming spots are farther away and are accessible by car or one of the buses that run very frequently to and from the sea during the summer months. There are numerous walking treks that set out from this area up the hills towards the wind-swept west coast or down the gentler (and greener) eastern slopes towards the island beaches. Distance to the main swimming spots by car is about 20 min while the bus trip takes a little longer.
What you get with the house:
-Bed and table linens (sheets, towels, tablecloths, etc.)
-Cleaning lady once a week (or more if desired) and help with moving luggage to and from the house at arrival and departure
