Sweet South Austin Cottage

Our sweet South Austin guest cottage is set back on our very deep lot for your privacy. The peace and quiet under the pecan trees makes it hard to believe that you are only a 7 minute drive to downtown and just over 1 1/2 mile to SOCO. We are a 10 minute drive or a $22 cab ride to the airport, and have easy access to all major roadways. Why stay in a hotel?
Enjoy your coffee on the private deck, explore our backyard and gardens, fix your meals in the fully furnished kitchen (we will have fresh fruit, snacks, coffee, tea and bottled water for you), or hit any of the literally dozens of cafes and restaurants nearby.
We live in the front house and are available for questions and referrals to entertainment, dining, etc. We want you to feel 100% at home.

The cottage itself was exactly as it looks in the photos: clean, well-stocked and had all amenities available (snacks, towels, soaps, lotions, standard/basic TV, etc.). My husband and I appreciated the owners leaving the lights on and the keys out for us (my flight was delayed and I arrived very late on my first night). We didn't rent a car or make arrangements for a car because we believed the cottage to be walking distance from the South Congress area, as mentioned in the other reviews, but it's about 2.8-3 miles one way to the center of that area and about 4-6 miles from the downtown 6th st. area, so not *really* walking if the weather is anything but perfect. You should thinking about making arrangements for a car or at least a bike/scooter if you stay here and don't intend on staying in the same area around the 290 for your leisure travel (i.e. best if you have family/friends that live nearby). All this is moot, of course, if you don't mind walking a 6-mile round trip to South Congress or 10-12 mile round trip to downtown Austin. Additionally, I needed to do some flight re-booking and since my trip was to be folded into an extended stay in Austin for work, I had to be on e-mail the Monday morning of my check-out (10/8) -- well, the internet was very slow and unreliable, so I wasn't able to be online consistently at all. I sent the owner an e-mail about it, but he never responded and it wasn't urgent, so I just dropped the matter and used my smartphone instead. If you need/want/are depending on access to internet during your stay here, please confirm that it's up and running before you book. Those would be my only two not-so-nice comments about the place. It's fine, but unfortunately, it's a little out of the way for my taste and the internet thing was a real problem for me during our stay. Again, none of this is related to the owners though -- the place itself and all our interactions were fine.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway.
Owner response: I'm not sure which reviews she read which made her think we are within walking distance of downtown or even the South Congress district (although we have had a couple of guests who did walk everywhere). One guest review specifically says "it is more than a walk to downtown and a car is a must", another guest review mentioned that it is "close to bus routes if you don't have a car", and the map on the website makes it pretty clear where we are located relative to downtown. For clarification, 2 blocks away from here is the intersection of S. 1st and St. Elmo. From that intersection it is less than 3 miles to Riverside Dr. on Lady Bird Lake. Downtown, City Hall, the West End, etc. are across the lake from that point. As for the internet, who can say? To my knowledge, no one has had issues there before, but I guess there is always the chance that it will be slow.

Cute little cottage. Nice quiet neighborhood. The owners were very helpful. The only drawback for us was the cable stations were very limited on the tv and the dvd player would not work properly. If you don't plan to be at the cottage much except for sleeping and eating it is a great place to stay.Recommended for: Age 55+.
Owner response: The faulty DVD player has already been replaced. Sorry, Tommy, I know you really wanted to watch that movie. Come on back, it will still be in the movie library.

This lovely cottage is in a nice residential neighborhood, and has a quiet and restful setting. We loved the private back deck, with access to the gardens. The fully stocked and equipped kitchen was a great bonus, as we did not have to find a store to get some breakfast food----it was provided for us! We will be back, as we plan to visit our new grandson as often as we can!Recommended for: Age 55+.

We stayed in this charming little cottage while visiting our son, who is studying in Austin for 5 months. The cottage has every possible thing you could need, and more! It was extremely well stocked with fresh and frozen food, drinks, fresh flowers, toiletries, etc. - excellent. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. Billy the cat, even likes to come and say hello! The cottage garden is very peaceful and pretty. Close to bus routes if you do not have a car.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

This charming cottage will be my home away from home when I come to Austin to visit my daughter. The fresh flowers in every room, the fresh bowl of fruit on the kitchen table, the stocked refrigerator and pantry, and the quaint deck/garden area...just like home. A wonderful retreat. It is more than a walk from downtown however, and a car is a must.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We have stayed is this cottage several times and hope to get back again. It has every aminty and is in a quiet location. When Using the deck for morning coffee or an evening adult cold beverage you can easily imagine that you are in the hill county miles from a city. It is that quiet and the trees and garden provide seclusion. All this and it's in a great location in SOuth Austin, easy to get to and close to the dining and music scene that Austin is famous for.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Cozy and comfortable. Near many good south Austin resturants, but easy to stay "home" and cook. Easy access to downtown Austin, The University, and the hill country. We look forward to returning.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
