View from back deck - Nevada City Vacation House near Hiking and Biking
Location: Nevada City, Gold Country & High Sierra, California, USA (1 1/4 Hour from Reno and Sacramento Airports)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
Our 2 bedroom guest house is not just a "rental". It is a "home." -- Totally separate, private, sophisticated, quiet, one-of-a-kind, architecturally designed, light filled retreat on Honeycomb Ranch, a non-smoking property located less than a mile from downtown Nevada City in a "neighborhood" of 4 ranchettes, each 5 acres apart. Our guests consistently tell us they are delighted to discover our unique, peaceful and comfortable guest house. It is the perfect retreat/get-away for a couple or a couple of friends or a small family. The master bedroom is very large with a pillowtop kingsize mattress and a sliding glass door opening onto a deck with meadow and forest views. The furniture in the living room is extremely comfortable, the kitchen is equipped and the views from every window are beautiful. Just bring your suitcase. Everything else is provided to make your stay relaxing and fun.
Wake up to the sound of birds and end the night on the deck gazing at millions of stars. It is easy to unwind in this special home with its zen-like feel situated on 5 pastoral acres of open meadows, pine, oak and fruit trees, organic gardens and a picturesque old barn. Wonderful, easy country walks from your door abound and hiking is minutes away. Tucked away in a hidden place with such a rural feel, you will be amazed to find what a very short and easy walk it is past beautiful Victorians to the bustling, historic, charming Gold Country downtown of Nevada City. In combination with "Twin City" Grass Valley, 3 miles away, there is more than an abundance of great restaurants, world class live entertainment, shops, galleries and museums to keep you busy.
If you are parents or grandparents with family living here, it is the perfect spot. If you live in San Francisco and want to make a quick getaway out of the fog, it is just a 2 1/2 hour drive. Reno is only an hour and 15 minutes away and Sacramento is just an hour. Easy drives to come to a "world away"! Now is the right time to make your reservations for summer to swim in the Yuba, hike, stoll to Farmers Markets, attend music festivals and just enjoy. Weddings abound in our area through the Fall so if you are part of the wedding party or a guest coming from out of town, make your reservations now. Staying in our guest house instead of a hotel will make the event that much more memorable.
The Yuba River and Scotts Flat Lake are each only 10 minutes away and the North Shore of Lake Tahoe is an hour. Early June, the spectacular Yuba River is a beautiful place to hike, settle in on a huge boulder and watch the water go by or jump in for a refreshing dip. In August and early September when the water really warms up, there is no better place to be. Scotts Flat Lake is also great for kayaking, sailing, swimming and picnicking.
Plan ahead! Nevada County is famous for its Fall colors and you don't even have to leave our property to see a gorgeous display of brilliant colors. Reserve some time now to stay at Honeycomb Ranch in the Summer or Fall before it gets all booked up.
If you like outdoor activities, relaxing, eating gourmet food, theater, musical events including classical music festivals that rival San Francisco and shopping in boutiques, and/or sitting quietly reading a book or meditating while watching birds soaring overhead, you will enjoy staying at Honeycomb Ranch while taking in all that Nevada County has to offer.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2002
Mike, my husband, and I have lived in Nevada City for over 33 years and have raised four children here. We have lived at Honeycomb Ranch for over 22 years. We both love Nevada County and have taken advantage of all the wonderful things that there are to do here including sailing and kayaking on Scotts Flat Lake, cross country skiing, biking, hiking, and attending many of the cultural events on an on-going basis. Having lived here for so long, I can send you in the right direction for anything you would be interested in doing. Both originally from Southern California, we would never want to live anywhere else but here. We travel often but always look forward to coming home. We are pictured here with our dog, Barley, who has become our official VRBO greeter.
Why the Owner Chose Nevada City
We chose to build a guest house on our property in a totally private spot so our friends and grown family members would have a wonderful place to stay when they came to visit. With our children now all living in other parts of the country, we felt the time was right to make our guest home available to people who are interested in coming to our area.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The best part of staying on Honeycomb Ranch is the tranquil feeling, the beauty and rural quality of being here and the closeness to town. Our guest house is a very special place, carefully designed to put your soul at ease. It is very quiet and peaceful and the vistas are beautiful. For us, it serves as a retreat and anyone who comes here and stays in our guest house feels the same way.

Christmas in Nevada City

Honeycomb Ranch was the perfect spot for me and my husband to rendezvous with my son and his girlfriend over the holidays. The beautifully maintained and very clean cottage is the "just-right" size and configuration for two couples to spend time together, especially when there is so much to do nearby. The cottage is tucked away in a corner of Nevada City such that you feel you are far away -- but it's a quick walk into town for the evening. The cottage is cozy, and made more so on freezing evenings and mornings by a gas fire. The kitchen was perfectly equipped for the simple meals we prepared, but even accommodated Christmas dinner (butterflied leg of lamb, grilled on the back deck barbecue). Beds were fabulous, deep with comforters, and the bathroom was spacious and replete with linens. Nina couldn't have been more accommodating, giving excellent directions and ideas about what to do and where to go in the area. We enjoyed waking up to great views, taking morning walks, hiking near the Yuba, Christmas shopping in Grass Valley, then having a cozy dinner in Nevada City. Nighttime was totally silent, and the starts were amazing. We'll be back, hopefully this summer, so we can explore more.

This house is fantastic, I highly recommend it. The place is exactly like it looks in the pictures: beautiful, brand new and spotlessly clean. The view from the deck is gorgeous and the whole place is always quiet. The gas fireplace heats up the whole living area, it's fantastic. Mike and Nina are friendly, hospitable and available to answer any questions you may have but they aren't at all imposing or overbearing. The house is located very close to historic Nevada City and is also close to Highway 49 so it's easy to explore the area. It was our vacation home away from home and we'll definitely be back.

This is a lovely guest house in a gorgeous, private setting. The house is very comfortable, with lots of light and great views of the property ( which is quite beautiful) It's an easy and pretty walk to downtown Nevada City. The owners are very nice and available for any needs or questions, but were utterly respectful of our privacy.

We spent a week here and didn't want to leave. The house is so very comfortable & clean and we never tired of looking at the changing leaves through the skylight. All a traveler could need has been anticipated, and the setting is private and beautiful. The owners are there when and if you need them but respect your space. Their dog Barley is a gentleman sweetheart. After a day of hiking and enjoying local history, we loved coming home to our special retreat. If you're serious about a visit to this area, book now before it's snapped up!

My significant other and I were looking for a quick, quiet, get-away at the end of September and found it at the Honeycomb Ranch. We enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere and view from the back deck, which included watching deer during the evening hours and admiring the stars at night. The guesthouse itself was absolutely clean and cozy. The walk into town was very pleasant and it was nice not having to find parking anywhere. Nina provided very helpful information and kept in good contact with us (via email), but was not intrusive at all. As a matter of fact, the only one we saw was their wonderful and friendly dog, Barley! I would highly recommend this place, as we’re already making plans to return next year.

The location was beautiful, quiet, surrounded by swaths of meadows ringed by a pine ridge, and complete with morning visits from Barley, the owner's (Nina's) sweet dog. The cottage is spacious, light, tastefully and sparely decorated, comfortable, with a great deck (with BBQ) overlooking valley and ridge. Yet Nevada City is only a few minutes drive. We stayed with our 1 1/2 year old, who reveled in everything, including an assortment of toys, as well as a large "bathing tub" Nina actually bought for our visit! She was the perfect host. We've stayed at many weekend places in Northern California, and this one was in the top two. It's gratifying that such a place exists.
Owner response:Thanks for your kind words! So, where is the other one you love? I want to go! Nina

This is the second year that we stayed in Nina and Mike’s wonderful house in the Nevada City area. The secluded house is behind their home and has its own private patio deck which overlooks a beautiful green field with a surrounding forest. One day a doe and two fawns were grazing below the deck. The deck is a quiet and peaceful place to have morning coffee. The owners give you your privacy but are also there if you need help with the house or directions to the many places to visit in the area. Our favorite place to eat is the Northridge Restaurant which is a half mile walking distance from the house. They have good hamburgers and pizza. Outside of Nevada City and Grass Valley fine restaurants we found a 50s/60s style restaurant called “The Willo Steak House” that serves great steaks. We also found a beautiful historic trail next to the Yuba River to take a walk or a good hike. The “Independence Trail” takes you in the old mining canal and across rebuilt plumes. Also be sure to get Barley treats from Nina. Barley is their dog and he is a big part of their Ranch. My wife and I miss Barley and Nina and Mike.
Owner response:We MISS you, too and hope to see you both again next summer! Nina

This is such a lovely home in a beautiful part of Nevada City where one can enjoy expansive meadow views and complete serenity. My husband and I were so surprised at the modern design and light filled family room, kitchen and master bedroom. We didn't have another guest but the small bedroom was lovely as well. Everything was clean and fresh. I've already told several friends in my area about this locale. Instead of a day trip to Grass Valley and Nevada City, why not linger for a few days and enjoy all the restaurants and wineries they have to offer. Bring some good books.

We just returned from over a week at Nina's FABULOUS guest house in Nevada City CA. It was perfect. We could walk to town, and go on hikes and bike rides directly from the house. The house itself was sparkling clean and lovely on the inside. We had every thinf we needed...and, since we were giving a wedding, we needed a lot! The only thing we couldn't find was a cookie sheet, so Nina just lent us hers! We were the envy of many who were staying in other rental places! We would return again in an instant!

The guest house is tucked away so if feels private (and stayed cool when it got hot). The layout inside was open and great for our toddler who loved to explore. We ate all of our meals out on the deck and enjoyed the views and the bird songs. Besides one big hill, it is an easy walk into town which is really convenient. We have been recommending this place to all of our friends, both those with kids and those looking for a romantic getaway.
