Cooke City-Silver Gate cabin description
What a spectacular view from this private log home! The Montana Rocky Top Cabin is a luxury vacation cabin in the Cooke City/Colter Pass area -- a one-of-a-kind elegant cabin with amazing views of mountain peaks in every direction!
Best of all, it's only eight miles to the Yellowstone Entrance! Just a little further into the Park, wildlife and wolf-watching opportunities await in the famed Lamar Valley... Just east of the cabin, at "Top of the World," visitors soak up the beauty of the Beartooth Scenic Byway.
Every window of the Montana Rocky Top Cabin frames a picture postcard view of the surrounding wilderness and mountain peaks. The huge front porch offers the perfect vantage point for wildlife watching and star gazing!
Visitors to the cabin travel only 2 miles east from Cooke City and 1 mile off Highway 212 (Colter Pass) then wind through the forest along the Clark’s Fork to arrive at the cabin, which sits at 8,600 feet. Situated on an acre that borders the Gallatin National Forest, it is a great starting point for exploration and adventure!
For your comfort, the home has one queen sized aspen log bed in the master bedroom, two twin-sized beds in the sleeping loft and one twin-sized bed in the downstairs TV room (with large VCR tape collection).
The cabin's kitchen is fully equipped and bedroom/ bathroom linens are brand new. Decorated for and by wildlife enthusiasts, the interior was designed with everyone from fly fishing groups to small families to romantic couples in mind. White oak flooring, wildlife art, animal furs, aspen and juniper accents, leather love seat and rocking chairs add to its western charm.
Resident wildlife including mountain fox, moose, deer, elk, eagle and an occasional bear have been spotted from the windows and front porch! Rivers and numerous pristine lakes offer fishing within a short hike of the cabin. Astronomy telescope also provided for a night sky tour!
What a view! What a location! What a gorgeous private retreat!

secluded retreat with great access to regional attractions
secluded retreat with great access to regional attractions
Stayed here for 4 nights in early August so that we could hike and sight-see in the region. Property owner was quick to respond to our inquiry and easy to deal with, but when we arrived in Cooke City, the local manager was not aware that we had booked the cabin, so it was not ready. However, she was pleasant about it and went to clean and prepare the cabin right away. In the meantime, we browsed and had coffee in Cooke City, so it was not a problem. I suggest calling her ahead of time to confirm that she has your reservation information. The cabin is just as pictured on VRBO, a few miles outside of Cooke City, in a quiet area with good views of the mountains. The road in is a little rough in spots, but we did not have any trouble in our Subaru. We saw deer most mornings and evenings. The cabin is tidy and clean, with lots of windows to take in the views, and a nice deck for sitting out, if the mosquitoes are not too bad. There are also lots of books about the region, plus some novels. We did not try out the TV or videos. The bedroom is small but comfortable, including some shelves and chest of drawers for clothes. The loft is very small – watch your head! But the mattresses are comfortable and there is a window to look out. The log ladder is a little hard to negotiate. It would be a lot easier if they flattened the rungs, and gave it a little bit of a lean towards the wall. The ground level has a single size futon and a tiny cubby-hole bed, which might be nice for a kid. Kitchen is a bit tight, but it is equipped with everything we needed: 2-burner stove, small fridge (second fridge on the ground level), sink, coffee maker, pots/pans, dishes, etc. Plenty of towels, etc in the bathroom. It’s great having washer/dryer available. Overall, a nice place to stay, and a great “home base” for adventures in the surrounding National Forest and Beartooth Wilderness. Probably best for one person, a couple, or a small family. Tips: Fuel up your car and shop for groceries in Red Lodge or Cody before you get to Cooke City, because it is a rather remote town and goods are expensive. There is no cell service at the cabin or in Cooke City. If you have a laptop, there is free wireless at the Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Center, though you need to get a code from them to use it.
