Perfect Hideaway

Extremely hospitable Jones and Pauline provide a cozy, comfortable, well-appointed cottage in which one can rest peacefully. Its front windows and porch provide a million dollar view of the weather, the sea, the sky, the town, the trees, the birds… the Pitons. This stunning environment is in a very private location, cooled by ever-present cool breezes that relieve from the heat of the shore and town. There are many opportunities to engage those living in Soufriere—purchase vegetables and fish from the outdoor market, use one of the several small supermarkets, enjoy tasty, inexpensive lunches in restaurants managed by charming owners. Be sure to address Jones and Pauline with any questions or needs. They are a wealth of assistance and information. Although the long, steep road to and from Soufriere is walkable and scenic—it’s the route Jones took everyday to school as a child—it will introduce you to leg muscles that you never thought would tighten up. Having wheels or using Jones’s taxi service, at least for the way up, is recommended. We will return.

Wonderful cottage in St. Lucia

Date of Stay: 01/24/11 Review Submitted: 02/07/11

We just got back from a week staying at this cottage, and highly recommend it. As other reviews have stated, the cottage is clean and well-maintained with a nice little kitchen, and has a fantastic view. The cottage has a mosquito bed net but we didn't need it. The bed had a nice firm mattress. The natural breezes at this elevation kept the temperature very pleasant, but there is a fan in the bedroom also if needed. The owners are warm, friendly, and welcoming people who made our stay very pleasant; they arranged pickup at the airport, tracked down and purchased fresh fruit and fish for us at our request (not always so easy to do), and arranged taxi rides (the owner of the cottage also has a taxi service) and a car rental as needed for reasonable prices and on short notice. We walked most places, but the cottage's location is not the most convenient for this as it is at least 1000-1500 feet above Soufriere and can be reached only by walking about 2 miles along the steep and winding main road which has no sidewalks and a fair amount of traffic (drivers are used to walkers on the road but it's still a little unnerving). At the end of a long day we usually called for a ride back to the cottage rather than sweating our way up the hill. On the day that we rented a car to tour the island, we did feel that having a car for more of our trip would have given us more of a sense of freedom. Places we enjoyed: Fedo's and Jah Lamb's for delicious lunches, a Sat. night dinner at Hummingbird Resort with steel band music on the beach (check as it's not every Sat.), Diamond Botanical Garden, Malgretoute beach south of town and Anse Mamin beach close to Anse Chastanet, a walk to Quatre Chemin up the road to see the landslide from the November 2010 hurricane. The Soufriere tourist office, on Bay St. right along the water, was very helpful. At the time of our visit, the main trails into the rainforest for hikes (Barre de l'Isle trail, des Cartiers trail, Quilesse Forest Reserve trail near Soufriere), as well as some other sights such as the Toraille waterfall near Soufriere, were all closed due to the effects of the Nov. 2010 hurricane.

Wow What a VIEW ! Best view you will find in St Lucia !

If you want a small cottage, romantic, for 2 people, this is just a beautiful 1br Cottage ! Very nicely done, clean, new, but the view ! Sitting on the porch looking at the Pitons and Soufriere and the Ocean down below.... is just the best! And the owners.... the nicest people in the world. You can go to resorts for the beach, pools, bar, and all the amenities, but you will not get the serenity, the view, and the experience you find here. Even if you go to a resort... make sure you spend at least a few days here because the time here is what you will remember most.

Our family had a great time at Jones' Hilltop Cottage

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cottage. The host family is really welcoming, nice and helpful, so be sure to ask them if you need anything. The cottage is charming and clean, and you can tell that they took care in building it. We spent every morning after breakfast finishing our coffee on the balcony, enjoying the gorgeous view of the Pitons, Soufriere and the sea. The kitchen is well-equipped, and we made use of it for several dinners as well as every breakfast. Food in St Lucia, whether local, casual restaurant food or gourmet resort food, is excellent, so be sure to try some of both types of places. The cottage is high in the hills overlooking the town, up a steep access road, so you will either want a car (really, a small 4WD is best on the island) or to arrange lots of transport. The family can help with both. Soufriere itself, while a useful base and not without charm, is not the main attraction - there is so much to see in the area, and you will want to be mobile. (Note that driving on the island is not for the novice.) While comfortable and convenient, this is rustic accommodation; think cabin in the woods, not full-service resort. Our daughter had a great time; kids that need TVs and game rooms and so on might not do as well. We would happily stay here again - preferably when all the mangos in the nearby trees can be eaten!

After travelling the island of St. Lucia, we quickly realized that we found paradise at Jones’s cottage, which is clean, cozy, fully equipped, and a home away from home. Jones and his family were very accommodating and helpful with taxi rides, advice and directions. Jones’s beautiful cottage has views of the Pitons, the village of Soufriere, the volcano, and the Caribbean Sea. Soufriere is the perfect location for all of the natural attractions the island has to offer—the Pitons, the “drive-in” volcano, the hot springs, the fresh foods and fish, the rainforest, the beautiful beaches, and diving. We fell in love with nearby Anse Chastanet beach. The people of St. Lucia are very friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend having lunch at Fedo’s, and a meal at Gees Bonmanje, both local Soufriere restaurants. Jonathan & Emily, Mystic, Connecticut--USA

Jones' Hilltop Villa is a charming cottage situated high above the town of Soufriere with stunning views of the town and the Pitons. Jones and his wife Pauline gave top notch accommodations for bargain prices. The cottage is spacious and has everything you may need for kitchen facilities. The surroundings are quiet with minimal lights to obstruct views of the stars and town at night. All the sites and amenities of Soufriere are a good walk (about 2 miles) or short ride away. Excellent beaches are also easily accessible.

We highly recommend a visit to Hibiscus villa. Built with TLC by owner Jones including the cabinets and some of the furniture the villa with its view make your vacation a pleasure. Add the addition of Pauline's attention to your daily needs of towels/sheets, information, shopping advice insures a ripple free experience. If you are an amateur radio operator this is an ideal location at 2,000 elevation. Jones will provide steel pipe support for mounting your vertical or small Yagi antennas. Villa is a "ham" friendly operating site. Voltage in the villa is 240vac so come with appropriate power supplies.
