Location: Portland, Portland Metro, Oregon, USA (1 Block Trans. Airport, 2 Blocks Trans. Downtown) View Map

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-8)

Built in 1890, and restored beautifully in the 1990's, this Victorian home is truly a refuge for humans and animals alike. Located in the Hawthorne/Belmont neighborhood, only three miles from downtown, you have absolute privacy, except for the company of many bird and animal species that share this space. Relax in one of several private garden spaces surrounded by beautiful flower and plants, or enjoy a rooftop deck with great views of our city. At the basement level, a quiet one chair salon, with well known cliental, is also available for your convenience, yet due to architectural design (double-wall construction, triple insulation w/hung ceilings to stop sound), you won't see or hear it unless you want to. Also, available by special request is an 450 sq. ft. sound-proof studio perfect for dance yoga, or partying, complete with it's own private garden.

While the house retains it's Victorian charm, complete with original hardware and lighting, it is fully insulated, has gas heat and central air conditioning. With 1375 sq. ft. to roam around in, you get a master bedroom complete with a garden room and a guest bedroom near the bird feeders. A walk in closet has full length mirrors. The parlor, which due to it's original sliding door, can convert to a private room at night and the beautifully combined kitchen-dinning area serves as a main gathering area. The bedrooms have very comfortable, queen-sized beds, and two queen-sized airbeds are also available. Therefore, up to eight can stay. Each room is decorated with original paintings and photography. Bring your lap top (the house has wi-fi) or I-pod, and plug into a great music system. Listen to it on the roof-top deck (16' by 22') as you watch the sunset over Portland's west hills. This part of Portland is a culinary center for some of the city's leading restaurants, which you could walk to afterwards. As a local hairdresser, part of my job for out of town patrons is guidance to some of the best cuisine in America.

One block away is Laurelhearst Park, over thirty acres of giant old trees including redwood, extensive Rhodedendron gardens and a duck pond. If that's not enough, Mt. Tabor, an extinct 650' volcano, is only two miles east. Two bicycles are available to cruise around and check it out. Unlike some areas of the city, the Hawthorne/Belmont area has a vibrant street scene. Walk down past eclectic shops. Street musicians and art are everywhere and the neighborhood is out; the good, the bad, and the FUN! Want cool clothes and jewelry like no one has at home? Would you like to see some really interesting people or would you rather go on some of the most beautiful hikes in the U.S.A.? As a local hiking expert, I'll be happy to guide you to more natural beauty than you can even imagine (close by as well)! Two blocks away is the bus into downtown, in case you want to experience even more shopping, art, dance, and other cultural events.

Perhaps you rather stay "at home" and watch cable TV in the garden room. If it were me though, I'd take a two hour soak in the master bedroom's six foot spa-like Victorian tub, which is almost in the middle of the garden! Light up the barbecue, cook with organic herbs and veggies from the garden, and watch the many species of birds that live here. Build a fire in the outdoor Chiminea. During migratory times, birds from as far away as Costa Rica (Western Tanagers, Grosbeaks, and Warblers) live in the garden with you. If you're a "birder", bring you're binoculars! Stay up late enough, and you'll probably see the Raccoons drinking from the fountain. Whatever you decide, I personally guarantee a healing, hospitable, enjoyable, and natural Environment!

Why the Owner Chose Portland

The reason I converted this place to rent, is so I can do some traveling myself.

The Unique Benefits at this House

This property is located in one of the choice spots in Portland. It's only block from Laurlhearst Park, a few blocks from great food and shopping, and three miles from downtown (the bus is two blocks). Also, it serves as a nature sanctuary, so you'll be surrounded by the songs of birds and sights of beautiful gardens. All this with the utmost of privacy.

Owner's Map of Portland

My name is Joseph Landry and I moved here when this was a run-down area. I decided to restore this property, and help restore the neighborhood too. Now, in 2009, this is quite the place to be! After many years in the music business, I became a hairdresser, then I started restoring old buildings (three since 1988). At 56 years old, I consider this my masterpiece, though there are a few more improvements to make. Come and let me share this most wonderful place to be!

    • We stayed at Joe Garden of Paradise one week for the last three summers. It keeps getting better!!!! Hard to believe you could have so much peace and tranquility in a garden in the middle of busy vibrant city. The Privacy and Peace in the garden with all the birds is worth Twice the price. We also like Joe's suggestions for the best new resturants to visit and dine many of which are easy walking distance or no more than a 10 minute car ride. We love our week of Peace and communing with the birds in the Garden of Paradise. Thanks Joe w

    • We make a stay at Joe's an annual event. As a foodie I make a pilgrimage to the world class Portland Farmer's Market. The market is amazing, but does not diminish the wonderful grocery stores. While sampling the local cuisine at restaurants is essential to a Portland visit, it is a joy to cook with the area's ingredients - fresh and aromatic organic herbs and vegetables, artisnal cheeses, hand made jams, berries, morels, local wines, crusty breads - need I go on? From Joe's you can walk to Zupan's and get incredible European pastries for your continental breakfast and pair it with some of Portland's rich and aromatic fresh ground coffee. We drive to the shore to hike, or go the the magical Eagle Creek Canyon in the Columbia River Gorge. While hiking and enjoying Oregon's beauty, we spend the day talking about which of the many eateries we will treat ourselves to. It is impossible to explore as many as we wish to in the short times we have there. The summers in Portland are pristine, but if an occasional day is frizzly a stop at Powell's Book store is a wonderful way to spend time. The traditional Chinese Garden is magical. The wineries are wonderful, the shore is beautiful, the mountains are amazing. Oregon is heaven. Joe is a wonderful and thoughtful host and his place is restful to the soul. After treating our senses outdoors all day, I stretch out in the wonderful clawfoot bathtub in lavender scented water and soak muscles and refresh. Then we head up to the roof to enjoy sundowners while enjoying the view and trek a couple of blocks for a divine meal. Finally, we head home, match mood and soft music by the chiminea, and fall gratefully into a comfortable bed. It doesn't get better than that! Every time I return home I leave a part of myself in this magical city and Joe's serene little Garden of Paradise.
