Nestled on the North Shore of Flathead Lake, the Rookery faces due south and looks down an expanse of water that stretches for thirty-five miles. The protected waterfowl habitat of the North Shore allows very few home sites, making the Rookery, just minutes from downtown Bigfork, feel sequestered and private. The house itself sits back from the lake, separated from the shoreline by lawns/gardens and a swath of cattail wetlands. A raised wooden boardwalk meanders through the cattails to arrive at the canvas-roofed Boathouse and boat dock. The Boathouse is filled with water toys, kayaks, comfy furniture, and has a porch at water's edge.
The Rookery main house is a large, two-story cottage that, although recently constructed, looks like a beach house dropped into Montana via Nantucket, 100 years ago. A private guesthouse/office wing is linked to the main house by a 30' long, year-round breezeway. Constructed of antique wood with an elevated Montana moss stone fireplace, the breezeway is the heart of the house in any season. With its long wall of huge windows offering spectacular lake views, the breezeway is the ultimate screened porch in summer and is the perfect place to lounge after a day of winter sports with its radiant heat floors and cozy fireplace.
The Rookery is charming, easy to live in, and family friendly. It is furnished with an eclectic and comfortable mix of antiques and contemporary pieces. The light-filled upper living level has a large open kitchen, dining, and living area with spectacular lake views from any angle. The master bedroom is also on the main floor, with private deck access and an adjoining sitting room complete with daybed, comfortable chairs, and a private patio. The upper bath is paneled in antique redwood and has double sinks and a large walk-in shower. On the lower level, there is a large, sunny, gathering room, complete with piano, TV, and patio access. Also on this level is a bedroom with a queen bed, a bedroom with two single beds, a bunkroom that sleeps four, a bathroom with a double sink and large shower, and a laundry room. And yes, all bedrooms and the family room have great lake views.
The Guesthouse/office wing attaches to the opposite end of the breezeway, perfect and private for additional family and guests. The Guesthouse has a bright, charming kitchen/dining/living area with great lake views and a separate entry. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a double and singe bed as well as a large bathroom with a clawfoot tub/shower. The downstairs office has lots of table/workspace, lake wiews, a 1/2 bath, and access to the outdoors.
