It will not be hard to find “Rafael’s House” in “Old Bank” on Isla Bastimentos. Rafael has lived here his whole life and everyone on the island knows him. Rafael’s father built this house over 80 years ago. Last year, we completely renovated the house to its original Colonial and Caribbean style. The house is fantastic - you have to see it!
Rafael’s house is located in the heart of town, right on main street. From the front porch you will have a first class view of everybody passing by on the street. In your hammock you will soon start to recognize the local people, and you might even pick up some of the local language: “Whappin man!”
The park, recently restyled and a favorite hangout for all generations, is three houses and a little bridge away from Rafael’s House. Here you will also find the Supermarket Huifa Wu, the police station, the hospital and public phones. You are in the center of “Old Bank” Bastimentos .
Rafael’s house has a fully equipped kitchen. It is the perfect place to enjoy your freshly blended fruit juice, with or without Abuelo Rum. On the patio behind the house, you are surrounded by palm trees and the sounds of the sea. From your hammock or rocking chair you will see Bastimentos Bay and Isla Solarte - in the same beauty today as Columbus saw it over five hundred years ago.
There are two bedrooms, both with double beds and semi-orthopedic mattresses. Each room has a safety-box and SKY Satellite TV. The living room has two single beds and SKY TV, as well.

Besides all the comfort of Rafael's House, Isla Bastimentos has a lot to offer. The island is famous for it's many lovely beaches. Wizard beach is just a 20 minutes walk from Rafael's House. The walk is beautiful and gives you gorgeous views on the surrounding islands and the Chirique highlands. Other beaches worth visiting on Isla Bastimentos are: Red Frog beach, Polo beach and Playa larga. The bat-caves are also quiet an adventure to visit.
To visit other islands and beaches, like Isla Zapatillas and Dolphin Bay, Rafael can put you in contact with different captains, so you can plan your own tour.

Year Purchased: 2008
Six years ago I came to Bocas while backpacking with my best friend from Mexico to Panama. Before our trip, I had left my job and house behind in Holland and lived in the United States for a year. During this backpacking trip, I was hoping to find THE place for me - a place that I could call home and find out what life is all about. Well, so I did. From the moment I stepped foot in Bocas, I loved it. Everything seemed to just fall into place, and after six months, I found a job as a tour guide. Because of this job and living in Panama's paradise, I never even thought about going back home. After a year on the island, I moved into a little Caribbean cabana. I fell in love with the house even before I set foot in it. From the first day, I wanted to buy the house. After a few years, nothing had happened, but I started seriously thinking about buying the house next door too. I went to Holland, and like buying a winning lottery ticket, I found myself a business partner! Back in Bocas, I bought the two cabanas. On a visit to nearby Bastimentos Island, I fell in love with Rafael's House, a lovely Caribbean Colonial style home. For me this is Panama's paradise.
Why the Owner Chose Bastimentos
I had already bought the two Cabanas on Isla Colon. When I found out that the house in Isla Bastimentos was for rent, I had a look at it. Setting foot inside, and seeing the beautiful arch that Rafael's father made, I was sold. I decided to rent the house. I love the Caribbean and Colonial style of the house, the same style as you see in all of Bocas del Toro. I also love the island and it's people a lot. I am very happy with Rafael's house!
