One of the most beautiful and well-known houses in the area. 200 year old house is filled with child friendly antiques. An acre and a third of landscaped grounds include an outdoor living room with a fireplace; children's play structure with climber, slides, swings, sandbox and more; and a children's house with electricity and a children's garden.
Walking distance from beautiful Bellport, where there are three outstanding restaurants. An hour closer to Manhattan than the Hamptons.
Sculptures in the 1 1/2 acre garden include life-size angels, a giant foot, and a two hundred year old terra cotta Italian chair, which can actually be used. Featured on A & E and True TV.
On garden tours. On the Historic Register. Four bedrooms can turn into six with the use of fold-out beds in the sun room and library. Kitchen has two ovens, dishwasher, and a host of kitchen appliances.
Zillions of plates, flatware, and glasses for entertaining. (You'll want to!) Seven fireplaces, one of them in an outdoor living room, which is everyone's favorite feature. All the firewood you can burn is provided free. Chidren's bedroom and separate art room -- supplies included.
Three staircases, one of them hidden behind the kitchen. Two hundred year old safe. Ample parking, plus garage. The backyard is sheltered and can't be seen from the street.
A host of outdoor and indoor games. Our last guests cried when they had to leave.

We didn't know what to expect when we first went to see the house. The owner was ver accommodating, allowing us to tour the property on a short notice and treating us to lunch. I should note that we were a party of four adults and a toddler. She told us about the area over some sandwiches and we were hooked. The house is old, but well maintained. Any issues we had were quickly addressed in the most friendly way. Our family had a great two weeks vacation and until his death this February my dad kept talking about how restful this vacation had been. The house is very child friendly and the grounds are child- and pet-friendly.Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

About the owner: I am a writer, who has published lots of books and magazine articles and I'm now finishing my first detective story. I also like to paint insects. (Not as kinky as it sounds.) My son and his wife and kids share the house on summer weekends. He owns a TV production company and she works for the United Nations.
Why the Owner Chose Brookhaven:
My kids are busy and don't want to spend the time traveling to the Hamptons, but even more Bellport and Brookhaven Hamlet, which are sister towns, are quiet, leafy, more like New England than Long Island. The neighbors are friendly -- I'm on a bunch of boards -- but they're not nosy. If you need kids for your kids to play with, there are really nice ones nearby. Sailing lessons and swimming lessons are available for kids and grownups. The nature walks are fantastic.
The Nature Conservancy was founded here and the local ospreys are famous.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love the peace and quiet, the proximity to Fire Island. The house is on the edge of a greenbelt that stretches across the island and is great for hiking and bird watching. There's a stable nearby. We're in the country, but close to town.
