Squam Lakeside Cottage - Spend Your Vacation on Golden Pond!
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:No
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Spend your 2013 vacation on picturesque Squam Lake, the site of the movie 'On Golden Pond'. In fact, the movie's producer, Bruce Gilbert, spent the summer with his family in this beautiful knotty pine cottage on the lake while the movie was being filmed. Enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, water-skiing from the private dock and hear the loons calling at night. Very private wood road location, yet conveniently located a short drive from Holderness shopping and marinas. Easy day trips to a wide variety of sights, including The Science and Wildlife Center in Holderness, the outlet stores in North Conway, the Mt. Washington Auto Road, or even the Maine coast for lunch and a visit to the L.L. Bean store. Enjoy the numerous nearby mountain trails. Explore Squam Lake's many hidden coves and indulge yourself in the unforgettable sights of this unspoiled, clear-water, mountain-region lake from a bygone era. Perfect for Fall Foliage viewing! Choice dates still available - call now!
Lake Activities: Private dock can accommodate two or more boats. Bring your own boat (boat launch ramp is less than a mile away) or rentals are available from 3 nearby marinas.
Picnic on one of the many public access islands on the lake. Enjoy water-skiing, tubing, and wake boarding (jet skis are not permitted on Squam Lake).
7-mile-long lake features many fine fishing areas away from swimmers and skiers.
Tours by boat of the 'On Golden Pond' movie sites on the lake are available in nearby Holderness -- visit 'Purgatory Cove' where Henry Fonda clung to the rocks waiting for Katherine Hepburn to dive in and rescue him. Later you can dine at Walter's Basin, the Holderness restaurant named for the movie's biggest lake trout catch.
Attend Sunday-morning (non-denom) services on Church Island in a stunning outdoor setting.
Explore a wide variety of lake features: The Narrows, jump off The Rock in Rattlesnake Cove, nesting Bald Eagles (June/early July), Dog Cove and, of course, the loons of Squam.
Mountains: Hike the many nearby mountain trails of Mts. Morgan and Percival, East and West Rattlesnake (an easy climb with a glorious view of the entire lake) and Mt. Chocorua. Further north you can find the Presidential Range of the White Mountains including famous Tuckerman's Ravine and Mt Washington, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi, with its Auto Road or Cog Railway options for those who don't want to hike it on foot but want to enjoy the views from the top. Many more mountain climbs of varying difficulty are within a short drive.
Local Attractions: Some of the many local attractions of the area include The Science and Wildlife Center in Holderness, featuring a wide array of rescued animals from the local area plus many educational activities.
The Polar Caves are just a short drive away in West Plymouth and The Cannon Mountain Gondolas are just a bit further north in Franconia.
Many other natural wonders can be found in the Franconia Notch area including The Flume, The Gorge, The Basin, Indian Head Mountain and outstanding mountain views. And don't miss the new 'Old Man of the Mountain' Memorial attraction, which re-creates that spectacular iconic natural rock formation.

What beauty....today took a long good-bye boat ride to see the eagle nest, the loons and the lake itself showed up with all its glory! Squam Lake was a mirror image and the loons could not be ruffled...they were there to wish us a safe journey home. Even the bald eagle stood very still on its perch so pictures could be taken! Our treasure was being with friends....a fabulous time was had by all! Memories are made of such times as these. Thank you to all the Alvords for rekindling memories of many years ago and making new ones to carry forever! Now we must Simmer Down....stretch it out.....and leave this wonderful place. Enjoyed a spectacular 4-day weekend celebrating our daughters PSU graduation here on Squam, and with perfect New England weather! Shared love, laughter, food and drink in the knotty-pine comfort of this great house. Great memories made here On Golden Pond and we hope to be back again some day! This was our first visit to the Alvord guest cottage. After spending all my summers on Squam for the past 50 years, this was the nicest spot ever! My husband and I are in love with the house as well as the dock and location. Thanks so much. Hope to see the loons again next year!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This is our second time here -- we forgot to sign the guest book in May 2010. We had a lovely time both times! Our beagle Cassie loves the chipmunks and the ducks! I love to sit on the dock and watch the loons. Joyce loves to paddle in her kayak -- and get away from my visiting family. We hope to come back in a year or so. Dont change a thing -- we love the natural beauty!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We had a great family reunion in this house. After a few rainy days, the weather was beautiful and we took boat trips, sailed, played tennis and hiked. A very peaceful place -- coffee on the dock in the morning, a glass of wine in the evening. We saw loons and ducks -- and even caught a few fish! And we watched On Golden Pond -- in the house that played a part in it! Goodbye Squam Lake!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This place is amazing!!! Its a great place if you are more of the outdoorsy type. I love the pictures of the cast and crew from On Golden Pond. Did you know that the little blond kid plays Richie Rich? Well, true fact. Shabadabadingdong,Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

A wonderful week of vacation in a beautiful home -- we love it here! Great weather -- every day! For baoting, beach and lots of barefoot water skiing -- even got our 3-year-old son up on the water ski trainer behind the boat. Many thanks for your hospitality -- the house and our week were fantastic! ---Eric, Dena, Gabriel - 3.5 years, Marena - 15 months, and Cricket - Boxer dog.Did you find this review helpful? We had a wonderful time On Golden Pond! Thank you for the memories of swimming off the dock, fishing, canoeing, family dinners, toasting marshmallows, making smores, puzzles and morning coffee on the still lake. We went to the Squam Lake Natural Science Center and took the Cog Railway to the top of Mount Washington. It was amazing....and cold -- 45 degrees, and the memories will last a lifetime. We hope to come back again for this family tradition. Mike, Jean, Mich, Michael Jr., Lexi, Aiden and Winston, our four-legged friendDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
