I hardly want to give a review for fear of everyone discovering this secret gem and have it not available for rent the next time we come back! But that would be selfish and Herlinda deserves to have people know about this perfect rental as it is apparent the pride she takes in her units! She overlooks NOTHING! We had a 20 hr travel day and arrived to our treehouse destination just as it got dark and found the property quite easily from Herlinda's directions. We were able to walk right in with no check in dillios to deal with and trust me, we were exhausted and just wanted to kick back and head to bed! I will not repeat all the other reviews as they are totally accurate! Herlinda's attention to details is right on the mark. You will have absolutely everything you need provided for you and top quality! It was so nice to wake up and be able to brew Kona coffee and have a nice Hawaiin drink in the fridge and fresh fruit as a welcome.I want to point out that of course we knew we weren't directly on the beach and as a first time Hawaii visitor I'm sure all of us have that vision in our minds..HOWEVER..after seeing that we were right outside the entrance access to the beach we were very pleased....and even more so when you hear just how loud the waves are. I'm not sure I would want to be directly on the beach because it is a constant roar and I would think it would be like a train running by your house 24-7. You can hear the waves from this property but muted which was lovely mixed with the sound of birds! Also this location is basically 20 minutes in every direction to all the places you want to visit and on the direct route to the North Shore. We so loved this place and were thankful to have experienced the real Hawaiin lifestyle...we also spent a week in Honolulu which is a whole different flavour. If you want relaxation, peace and quiet, you found the spot! Herlinda also supplies a lot of reading material on local restaurants, site seeing, as well as some helpful tips on how to make you feel comfortable in her rental unit. These helpful hints show you the pride Herlinda takes in her property and why it is so clean. There are things supplied in the unit that help you kick back and not worry about spoiling her things..such as appliance manuals, throw sheets for the furniture when eating sloppy food on the couch while watching tv! I loved that!! We LOVED ice machine. We were so comfortable in the end we felt the Treehouse was ours! TY for everything Herlinda!:) C&J

Just returned from 14 nights spent in Zen Treehouse and I can honestly say that this place was simply amazing. This was our 7th trip to Hawaii and we wanted to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. I can honestly say that the Zen Treehouse exceeded our expectations of vacation rentals in Hawaii. After a really easy reservation process, Herlinda (the hostess/owner), sends you an email that gives you the basics. It has very easy to follow directions to the unit, where the grocery stores are on the way, where to park and the check in process... made it all stress free and a breeze. What you really want to know about is the rental... The Zen Treehouse is absolutely amazing and a real stunner. It's a great size (900 sq ft) and very nicely decorated/furnished. There are hardwood floors throughout the unit, granite countertops in the kitchen, travertine countertops and slate floors in the bathroom. This is not your typical rental where the owner put in marginal stuff for fear of being ruined. No expense was spared in this rental. There is a full sized stainless steel fridge/freezer with water/ice in the door, a induction hot plate with stainless steel cooking pots and extra large stainless steel toaster oven that easily fit a frozen pizza. There is a coffee maker, bean grinder, smoothie blender and rice cooker. There is an iPod docking station/radio, a flat screen TV with DVD player and a library of DVDs. The bed is plush top and so very nice to sleep in. The towels are thick and fluffy. All plates, cups, mugs, silverware, etc is provided. Seriously, no expense was spared when this place was designed, built and furnished. There was even organic lavender shampoo provided in the shower! You can tell that a lot of thought was put into the comfort of the guest and the little details that make all the difference. I was/am truly impressed (and remember, I'm considered a 'princess' when I travel so that says a lot!). While there was no A/C, none was needed as the trade winds cooled the unit. My husband and I kept saying that we felt like we were at home and loved just hanging out there. As you can tell, I can go on and on and on about this place. I have travelled from Egypt to Indonesia to Fiji to Brazil and everywhere in between. I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite places to stay in the entire World. When we return to Hawaii for our 8th trip, there is no doubt that I will return to Hale Nalo.

(Posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) We just returned from a week in Zen. My new wife and I had planned our wedding and honeymoon in Oahu for a year. We took our time looking for the perfect place to stay. After narrowing down the area we found Hale Nalo and read the great description written by the care taker and other reviews we found written by guests. We felt it sounded like a perfect fit for us and exactly what we were looking for. We had high expectations and wanted everything to be perfect for our big day. ?After spending a week on the other side of the island we were thrilled to find Hale Nalo in a lovely and quite neighborhood. Upon opening the private and secluded gate we enter a very nice courtyard with ample parking. After that you find a nice lobby and shared beach supplies that saved us money on rental fees. The provided check-in procedures were very easy to follow and allowed us to start our vacation immediately. Even before arriving I felt like I knew exactly what we were getting into and we were never disappointed. ? The Zen tree house is amazing and well worth the cost and probably a lot more after comparing other options on the island. We felt very private and secure and were able to enjoy our time as we wanted. The other guests on the property were all respectful of each other and you barley knew anyone else was around. This is truly a piece of paradise and a wonderful glimpse into the real island life not found in a hotel on Waikiki beach. The beach is very close and it is beautiful. So beautiful we were married right down the way from the house. We visited all sides of the island and felt lucky that the best beach on the island is right out the door of where we were staying. ?I could go on for pages and repeat all the great things others have said but it is not needed. This is a wonderful gem in paradise. The pictures you see are accurate and you feel like you are stepping in to a magazine. We have nothing bad to say and consider ourselves very picky and hard to please at times. ?If you are fortunate enough to have a conversation with Herlinda consider yourself lucky. We feel that we have made a friend for life and felt privileged to have her share in our special day. She was extremely accommodating and helpful and only added to our wonderful experience. She provides a wonderful service and has great recommendations of things on the island. We can't wait to return to paradise and our new friend.

(Posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) Dear Fellow Vacationer, We had such a restful stay here - the treetop level apt. is tastefully put together and has every comfort - trade winds sweep thru from the oceanside balcony to the mountain side balcony where we had all our meals( lots of fresh fish.) Great view of the mountains from one, little patches of sea appearing thru the palm trees from the other, sounds of birds in the trees, Lucinda the pet chicken strutting in the garden below. Only a minute walk past residential cottages to the unbeatable beach which is safe, sandy, with your personal palm tree for shade. You have the beach almost all to yourself as well. Our hostess Herlinda was the best. She could not have done more for us. I don't know what else to say except it was our best stay in Hawaii (out of a dozen) and we're coming back here! SB and STB, happy travellers

(Posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) We stayed in Zen for a week. It was a wonderful experience. The inn is in a quiet residential area apart from the highway. At night, many stars glitter surrounded in gentle wave sound from the beach. In the morning, we are awakened by lively birds' songs. The room is on the second floor, and the interior is coordinated in good sense. From the lanai, we could see the Ko'olau Range. It's view changed time-to-time, and rainbows appeared in a morning shower. It was so nice to have breakfast in the lanai with a nice view of mountains.

(Posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) 7 nights in Hale Nalo - The Zen Treehouse. It was the most amazing vacation we ever had!!! We went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and picked Hale Nalo for the quiet, relaxing atmosphere. It was beauiful, we loved the treehouse with our fresh fruit basket and a selection of Hawaiian drinks awaiting us. The room has everthing needed for the stay...from fully furnished kitchen, living room area with tv and dvd player and movies, to the most comfortable bed ever, lots of closet space and a beautiful bathroom. The walk-in stone shower was our favorite part. Herlinda (the house owner) was very accommodating and respectful of our privacy. It was like having our own private retreat. The views from our patios of the mountains were spectacular. The Waimanalo beach is only a 1 minute walk away. It is a gorgeous beach .

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) This place brought back wonderful childhood memories. Not in the sense that one grew up on a tropical island, but in the sense of what childhood summer days are all about… absolute carefree days without a worry in the world. Take away the valet, bellman, maitre’d and all the pretentiousness of a regular resort and you get a beautiful private place to call home in a peaceful neighborhood on a long secluded beach. A beach with the finest sand on the island (literally, the sand in Waikiki is of a courser grade). This is a vacation of an elegant lifestyle from a simpler time, a time that we should all revert to if we could. Everything you need without everything you don’t. If I had to pick one thing that was missing, it would be a bicycle from days past to meander through the neighborhood as one did in younger years. Our hostess was gracious, professional and friendly in a way that a good neighbor of many years would be. It’s like staying with good friends, but having your own time and space to relax. This is a time to shed life’s issues without living in a fantasy environment. It is a cleansing of the mind as tranquility takes over that will bring back memories of your own. Re-think your next trip when you leave corporate America to stay in a corporate resort. You aren’t really escaping your current status. Dial back the years and leave your worries behind. Your memories of carefree days will humble you. Room Tip: Zen Treehouse is the one!

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) The Zen Treehouse is the most beautiful, relaxing, peaceful place on the island! We came for our wedding/honeymoon and could not have asked for a more wonderful experience. Walking up the steps from the garden entrance, you feel the cool breezes from the 2 patios on both sides of the house with the ocean and mountain views and feel like you are truly in paradise. With the vaulted ceilings and fans, the air is always moving and you hear the ocean and birds. The decor is elegant, with many extra touches, from the red luxury sheets, to the open shower for two and the tile and hardwood floors. Herlinda has made this place a truly wonderful place to get away from the world, yet are so close to the greatest beach on the island and to all the things in town. She gave us so many wonderful tips on things to do, we had the time of our lives. We did the WildWest swim with the wild dolphin expedition and it was amazing! Swam with 80+ spinner dolphins and found a pod of 6 whales! We ate at Serg's almost everyday, the fish taco's are to die for! The beach is 2 houses down and we never saw more that a handful of people on it and it is 5 miles of gorgeous sand. We have to say we were totally blown away by the beauty, peace and hospitality of Herlinda and her wonderful treehouse. We have already booked our return stay for next year!

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) Waking to the sounds of birds was such a delight. So melodious, not annoying. My husband and I stayed in the Zen Treehouse for 4 nights at the end of our Hawaiian vacation celebrating our 30th anniversary. What a soothing place to just enjoy Oahu. This upper level apartment is an elegant surprise in a modest neighborhood, steps from the beach. Everything is appointed so well--the shower had a river rock floor and rainshower shower head. The bed was very comfortable as was the entire suite. Two decks, granite counters, lovely wood floors, washer and dryer--it was just perfect. Our host Herlinda was exceedingly helpful. Walking to a pleasant breakfast at Sweet Home Waimanalo was such a treat. . Several evenings we drove back to Waikiki to meet friends and the ride was just the perfect length. We even got to hang with the locals at a shelter during theTsunami evacuation! I'd stay here the next time we come to Oahu---away from the crowd, but close to everything, too. We'll be back!

(Posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) This was our second blissful escape to the Hale 'Nalo ZEN Treehouse. Serene and smiling, the owner, Herlinda, has an extraordinary gift of making you feel welcome to your "own" neighbourhood beach house. Spotlessly clean and fresh, the tree house has two decks, a modern kitchenette, a comfortable sofa, and a great bed. The dressing area and bathroom are well designed, especially the walk-in shower. Hale Nalo is not a resort, but a lifestyle. Awaken to the birdsong in the tropical trees; fall asleep to the sound of the waves. Walk a minute from "home" and stroll for hours along a gorgeous beach where neighbours say a friendly hello. Honolulu is another planet. Thanks so much, Herlinda. We will return.

(As posted on www.flipkey.com/196555) "A hidden gem in an unbeatable location." Hale Nalo is truly a hidden treasure. Tucked away on a quiet street in Waimanalo, a small community on the Windward side of Oahu, this beautiful home offers travelers three separate suites with access to a lovely tropical garden. The home is a stone's throw from a beach that is every bit as beautiful as Kailua and Lanikai, but blissfully quiet and—when we were there—nearly deserted. It is close enough to the ocean to hear the surf, yet boasts a spectacular view of the lush and breathtakingly corduroy-ridged Koolau mountain range on the other side of the home. ??Serenity is the theme here, and is reflected in everything from the setting and the decor, to the interesting array of books that line the bookshelves. The suite we stayed in, the "Treehouse", was clean, well-appointed and enhanced by 2 private lanais and thoughtful touches like postcards and a handbook containing information about good local restaurants and interesting sights nearby. The owner was very friendly and accommodating.??Waimanalo has real local flavour, and if you are looking for a less touristy, more authentic experience of Hawaii, this area fits the bill. If you want to spend some time seeing the sights in Honolulu, it is also only a 30 minute (very scenic) drive to the city. We were blown away by our experience at Hale Nalo in Waimanalo and would not hesitate to return!

(As posted on www.flipkey.com/196555) Well, it’s been several weeks since we returned from vacation where we stayed at Hale ‘Nalo and I think it is time to get down to it and write this review. I was hesitant to jump right in after returning since the blush of vacation was still fresh and I figured it wouldn’t be altogether reliable if I wrote from that perspective. But now that a bit of time has passed I believe I can give it a more seasoned review.??Hale ‘Nalo is located in a quiet residential area about 1 block from the renowned Waimanalo beach. In 60 seconds one can leave their unit, walk down the road and find one’s self on the expansive beach. And when I say expansive, I mean an uncluttered, clean, white sand beach that extends north and south for about 5 miles. And -- there was virtually nobody there on the beach. We watched the sun rise and the sun setting sky with not a disturbance or disruption save for the steady accompaniment of the waves.??Hale ‘Nalo has 3 units, of which we stayed in two. Two units are similar on the first floor, the Garden Suites, and the third (the Zen Treehouse) is on the second floor. But it should be noted that while the Zen unit is above the two on the first floor, it is offset so as to not place the entire living quarters on top of the two lower units. This lends itself well to maintaining a hushed (read this -- bird-listening-friendly) environment in the Garden Suites. My wife and I stayed in one of the Garden Suites for 5 days and then Zen unit for 10 days.??The Garden Suites are open and comfortable with a main living area, including a very comfortable queen bed, kitchenette area, and a sliding door to the garden area outdoors. The ceilings are vaulted tastefully so as to give a sense of greater space and enclosure yet not so towering as to thrust one into a cavernous echo-chamber. There is a bathroom off the living area.??We found our Garden Suite lent itself well to those who would be visiting Oahu and who have an established itinerary or a spirit of exploration. The kitchenette lends itself well to uncomplicated dining, and the living quarters make for a great “central base” from which to embark everyday... (see full review at www.flipkey.com/196555)

(As posted on www.flipkey.com/196555) "If You Want to Get Away from It All..." Before beginning my review I have to note that I read or at least scanned all of the previous reviews. I can happily report that all of the other reviewers had the same sense of Hale Nalo as we did - it is private, peaceful and serene. If you don't look for these values in your vacation destinations you might not be happy here. However, if these values are important to you, your search has ended. Just book Hale Nalo. Herlinda has done a wonderful job of providing for your creature comforts. Clean and comfortable lodging in a garden setting with kitchen and laundry right at hand, along with all of the gear you might take along for a day of beaching, snorkeling or just plain exploring. Hale Nalo is located in a nice residential area of Waiamanalo and served as the perfect home base for our daily explorations. Honolulu, Waikiki and Diamond Head are about 30 minutes distant. Kailua is perhaps 15 minutes to the north and Hawaii Kai about the same distance to the south. Both of these towns have full service food stores and a good variety of dining options. The North Shore is about 1 1/2 hours north but a beautiful drive as you can follow the coast for most of the trip. At some points you may be perilously close to driving into the ocean. It's a fun trip and more so in winter when the big surf is rolling in. And here's the best part, at least to us. We could get up early, engage in one morning adventure or another, and be back at Hale Nalo for lunch before lolling the rest of the day away at our "private beach". Just the way we like it. All in all our nine days at Hale Nalo rank among the top trips we have taken over too many years to count. When we are able to return to Hawaii in the future we will surely make some time to stay again at Hale Nalo. Thanks to Herlinda for providing such a wonderful hideaway.

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) "ZEN Treehouse - WOW! Location - AMAZING! Stay here if you can!" Where do I start? As a former resident of Oahu returning for his wedding and honeymoon I am not sure me and my wife could have selected a better getaway on our favorite Island and on our favorite part of the Island. First of all, the accommodations at Hale Nalo and more specifically the Zen Treehouse are top of the line! I can't speak for the "bungalows" below the Treehouse but they looked very nice and had everything you would need for an extended stay in Paradise. However, the Zen Treehouse.....Incredible! Just about everything is top of the line. Herlinda, the hostess and owner, has clearly spared no expense in modeling/furnishing and designing this oasis in Waimanalo. From the gorgeous hardwood floors to the adjustable blinds to the fantastic garden shower and bathroom and the vaulted ceiling wood beams. You are provided with everything you need from a full size refrigerator to a mini oven and even a portable gas burner to cook your own meals. Fresh fruit was provided our first day as well as fresh coffee beans in our fridge and a coffee bean grinder to last us our whole stay! There is also a brand new state of the art 4 burner propane grill at your disposal on her garden grounds. And finally, I can't forget to mention the King size bed. Hands down the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. Next, there is the location. Waimanalo is in our opinion one of the most beautiful parts of the Island of Oahu. Living in Oahu we would frequently visit the beach here as it was one of our favorites. Hale Nalo is located in Prime Real Estate of Waimanalo. It is nestled back EXTREMELY close to the beach. For those of you whos main attraction is locating a rental property close to the beach this is the place to be. Hale Nalo is located DIRECTLY on a beach access point. This is important as it means it is just about a 1 minute walk to the most secluded part of Waimanalo Beach. It is a busy day on this Beach if you see more than 10 people within 100 yards of you (seriously!). This isn't Waikiki. This is a Corona commercial. Herlinda provides you with snorkel gear, boogie boards, towels, coolers, mats and chairs to use at the beach so no need wasting money on buying that stuff at an ABC store and having to lug it back home... (As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo in December 2009) Finding solitude and a beautiful, tranquil beach on the most populated island of Hawaii, Oahu, was a refreshing way to spend our Christmas this year. Staying at the Hale Nalo Vacation Rental in Waimanalo gave us the best of both worlds. Herlinda Lopez, the hostess, made us feel at home in the Zen Tree House that she decorated with the utmost simple elegance. This colorful, well aerated space had a modern, well-equipped kitchen, unique and spacious bathroom, and two balconies including a barbecue all surrounded by a beautiful, lush garden. The location was nice, with a view of the cliff of Koolau on one side and hearing the waves crash from the nearby beach on the other side. Waking up to the kitchen filled with fresh pineapple, local bananas, and the best coffee beans ready to be ground added to the relaxing nature of our stay. If your body and mind were not already positively influenced by the serene surroundings, browsing some of Herlinda's book selection will intensify your vacationing spirit. This tranquility is within driving distance of the good restaurants of Kailua (on that subject, treat yourself to Formaggio's restaurant) and Waikiki is not too far either. We truly enjoyed the stay! (As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) We had not planned to stay at Hale Nalo during our visit to Oahu last month, but found it online after being very disappointed with the resort we chose. We check in and out of that place within 60 mins. We found Hale Nalo using our iPhone Google app! It was divine intervention. My husband and I are not resort people. We love low-key, but nice accomodations when we travel. Hale Nalo is both of those things, but so much more. We stayed in the Zen Tree House and it is just so lovely. The decor is gorgeous, the hostess so, so nice and it is a less than a minute walk to one of the best beaches on Oahu. We loved the peace and quiet. We will definitely return and we have only the best things to say about Hale Nalo! The perfect place to stay in Hawaii if you want to avoid the crowds, find peace and quiet and just relax!

(Posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo} Hale Nalo's Zen Treehouse is that rare find. . .it exceeded our expectations. Our host, Herlinda Lopez, has thought of everything, indeed we lacked for nothing in the way of comfort or convenience during our stay. The Treehouse is immaculate. Let me say that again. It is immaculate. The decor is eclectic; many items we suspect brought back from Herlinda's far flung travels. It all works. From the moment we walked in the door we knew we had found a place that would be hard to leave. We spent our scant four days lounging on the overstuffed sofa and chair, reading and talking for hours, enjoying the windward breeze blowing through the open doors and windows. We never closed them, day or night. Evenings we slept to the muted sound of ocean waves and mornings awoke to tropical birds singing and calling one another in the nearby trees. Herlinda was available when we needed her, almost magically appearing. Otherwise we would not have known she was there. We saw the other guests once or twice, but never heard them. Read other reviews for specifics, but believe us when we say Hale Nalo's Zen Treehouse is paradise. We are planning our next visit. A few tips about Waimanalo: We shopped at Shima's, the local market. It's limited, but had all we needed, including a small liquor department. The casual restaurant, Sweet Home Waimanalo, is easy walking distance. Sandwiches, salad, grilled chicken and meats. Very fresh local produce. Our two meals were delicious. For diet coke lovers, Mel's Market next door has them really cold for .50 each. Do take the time to visit Sean at Spiral Gallery down the road a bit. He serves a great cup of coffee and even better conversation. Spiral Gallery serves breakfast and lunch, but we'd picked up a couple of doughnuts from Ken's Bakery next door to go with our coffee. Ken's looks marginal, but don't let that stop you. These are the real deal! I also had a slab of bread pudding. I couldn't help myself. Both were hot and delicious. Get to Ken's before 10 a.m. or you're probably out of luck. Spiral Gallery is open till 7 most nights, later when there's entertainment. These, and almost all businesses in Waimanalo are located on Kalanianaole Highway. The town is really small, so all should be relatively easy to find.

{As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo} Our stay at Hale Nalo was truly rejuvenating. We spent 5 nights in the Zen Tree House, and 1 night in one of the lower suites. This was a perfect getaway, away from the crowded, noisy, touristy Waikiki Beach, but just close enough to see all the sights. The Rooms First off, if you are staying at Hale Nalo, you MUST stay in the Zen Tree House! It is the suite upstairs, and is a world of difference from the lower floors. The suite is very roomy, with (1) a kitchen (sink, a portable cook top, a toaster, coffee maker, microwave a full size refrigerator) with all the plates, mugs, knives, utensils, etc., (2) a spacious granite counter to have the wonderful breakfast on, (3) a living space complete with a comfortable sofa and a good size flat screen TV, (3) the bedroom (which is partitioned from the living space only, not a full wall) with a king size bed, which is just a hop away from (4) a walk in closet big enough for two, complete with nice wooden hangers, drawers, and room to put our suitcases, and (5) a nice roomy bathroom with lots of counter space to put all of our stuff and a beautiful shower (a nice body wash provided too). There are two patios, one with a small table and chairs for the very casual dinner, and the other a great place to rest the snorkeling gear after a day of fun on the beach (at least that’s what we did). Because there are many windows (and by the way, nice shades on those windows!), there is a nice breeze that cools off the room in the morning and in the evening. The floor is a very good quality laminate (dark hard wood), which adds to the “zen” feel of the suite. Most importantly, it gave us a lot of privacy and quiet. In summary, I felt like the suite was an extension of my own home, and I can recommend this suite to anyone. The sounds of the ocean can be heard faintly at night, and the chirping of birds awaken us in the morning. It’s not the sounds of buses and cars or screaming teenagers partying in the pool. My only comment is that the bed was too soft for us; we're used to harder beds. This is of course a matter of preference, so take it for what it's worth. In contrast, the lower rooms are simple suites. After having spent 5 nights in the Zen Tree House, the small suite felt cramped, but was certainly fine for our one night stay.... {As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) I had high expectations. I wanted to getaway and yet remain connected. I wanted a place where I could relax and be close to the beach. I wanted the option to stay in and cook, if the desire struck. I wanted to be surrounded by trees. I wanted to see the mountains out my windows. I wanted to feel the seabreezes blow through my room. I wanted the modern conveniences of WiFi and mobile phone service. I found everything that I was looking for, and more, in the Zen Treehouse at Hale Nalo. It is not an "if" but a "when can I" return!

{As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) my husband and i just spent five nights in the zen treehouse and didnt want to leave! after a stay in waikiki we decided to go to waimanalo beach as we had been married there ten years before, we were not dissapointed. from the very start your host could not do enough to please you, nothing was too much trouble. beach is a 30 second walk from the front gate and worth getting up early to see the sunrise, the water is a gorgeous shade of blue but beware the waves can be quite powerful on a windy day. everything has been thought of here and the little things mean alot, like boogie boards, beach chairs, cool box etc all yours to use anytime. the apartment itself was wonderful and the pictures on the website do not do it justice. was wonderful to have two lanai where you got a lovely breeze. this apartment does not have ac but does not need it as having balcony doors open allows plenty of air to come through. would highly reccomend this place to anyone and would love to return someday.

{As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) My husband and I picked Hale Nalo having never been to Hawaii. We chose Oahu as the island of choice because it seemed to have the most going on. Nature and nightlife. When I continued to read reviews on where to stay on the island I noticed a bunch of reviews claimed that Waikiki was more like Vegas than the Hawaii we see on TV. They were right on! If I wanted Vegas I would go there. So I searched for a place out of the tourist trap. I looked for a vacation rental but wanted to be taken care of a little more than that. I looked at hotels but they all seemed to lack the down home Hawaii I wanted to experience. We were staying for 8 days so I needed something within a budget too. Under $200 and still nice was my requirement. I wanted it to be on the beach but that type of lodging costs you. After two weeks of searching (literally) I found the website for Hale Nalo. WOW, The pictures are very true to what you get. Personally I think it's better. You can hear the waves at night, you can hear birds in the morning and I counted 70 little steps to the amazing beach! Gorgeous and clean with no crowds at this beach! I have a friend who lived in Hawaii and Waimanalo is the town to stay in if you want to be outside the hustle and bustle of the big city but still close enough to visit it. We drove maybe 30 minutes to get to Honolulu, and what a drive! Lovely views the whole way whether you take Pali Highway or the coastal route. The room was clean and I loved the decor. Herlinda is the host and she does a perfect job of being there if you need her but also being laid back if you don't. It's the best of both Hotel and Bed and Breakfast styles! We got to see the Tree house suite which is amazing! It was booked for the time we were there but Herlinda gave a quick tour in case we were able to book it the next time we come back. Which we will!!!! I feel so blessed that we found such great lodging our first stay in Hawaii thanks to Herlinda and Hale Nalo!

(As posted on VRBO listing #171140, our error :) https://admin.vrbo.com/admin/TravelerReviews.aspx?listing=171140 We spent a delightful two-week anniversary vacation in the Zen Treehouse. The location was perfect: quiet, close to the best beach on O'ahu, elegant touches in the decor; the trees, flowers and birds were beautiful. We had everything we needed. The staff were friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We highly recommend the Zen Treehouse.

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) We stayed in the Zen Tree House for a week and it was everything and MORE than expected. The Tree House is very nice and the decor calms the spirit. Kitchen is well equipped with everything...we even grilled on the gas grill a few nights and used the fantastic rice steamer! The bed is wonderful after a long day of hiking or swimming! I'm a bed snob and this was well done by Herlinda! No one really talks about the shower much in this place, but it's a river rock shower with amazing water pressure and views of lush tropical foliage/trees...nothing compares to a shower here! The location is perfect to get anywhere around the island and for the price, you would be crazy to stay anywhere else. Very private, calm, and stress free place...just sounds of birds and the crashing waves! Visit nearby Whole Foods for your Grindz (foods)...what a treat to support local farmers and producers! Thanks Herlinda for sharing your spirit with us!

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) "A truly Hawaiian experience of aloha, warm, simple, clean, comfy, a minute from the beautiful beach!!" Absolutely should not be missed! Comfortable residential neighborhood with spirit of old Hawaii. Beach and water take your breath away and you can walk for hours! Beach parks are close by as well. Rooms decorated with warm and inviting colors, have everything you could need, thoughtfully planned, garden full of songbirds, perfect kitchenette, beach equipment at your fingertips, washer and dryer, safe parking, sweet "common" room and incredible upstairs sweet. (We didn't stay in the suite but had the opportunity to view it) Close enough to go to Kailua and North Shore very easily or to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling or over the pali to Honolulu for the busy entertainment! Sweet local food close by in walking distance. Friendly local people. But the most beautiful part of all of this experience was Helinda's warm and welcoming spirit that makes you feel like you have a new home away from home! Genuine hospitality cannot be learned and is such a treat to experience. Herlinda's friendly and helpful suggestions and her enthusiasm and stories were truly so enjoyable! We will definitely return just as soon as we can!!

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) Our first experience with vrbo.com and it couldn't have gone more smoothly. Hale Nalo is a beautiful property and the beach is a short one minute walk from the front gate for more million dollar views. The complimentary pineapple, bananas, coffee and juice made checking in late in the evening a non-issue as we already had supplies for the first breakfast. We took her suggestions for restaurants and ate at five of the places (Shiso, Fromaggios, Cinnamons, Sweet Home Waimanalo and Giovonnis) and they were all outstanding. We especially enjoyed the Watermelon and Rocket Salad at Fromaggios. Bottom line: if you're looking for a great, with minimal crowds, vacation I would certainly recommend the Zen Treehouse and Waimanalo in general.

I have been on Hawaii for almost two months. I traveled to Kauai, Maui, and Molokai, but one of my most favorite spots has been Waimanalo. So I came back again! In the process I found Hale Nalo's Zen Treehouse. It was heavenly. My boyfriend and I stayed four nights. It was such a treat to be in such a beautiful place. Off the backporch you see the beautiful mountains with rolling clouds that wash over them daily. With all the windows lining the walls you hear every raindrop and the ocean calling you to come play. When we arrived there was fresh coffee ready to be ground, fruit juices, and a wonderful fruit basket that we snacked on daily. Every morning we'd have coffee on the porch and take everything in. When we were ready to get to the beach it was a simple 100 yard walk. The beach itself is absolutely beautiful and feels like paradise. This is a perfect romantic getaway. Children are not allowed as well as guests who aren't registered. So if you're looking for a place to house others, or bring new friends you meet, it may not be the ideal place for you. However, if you and a loved one are looking for a quiet, beautiful, peaceful getaway, this is perfect. Staying upstairs I could hear no other guests. We played music as well and no one could hear us. There is also washers and dryers, wonderful reading material, and just an overall peaceful vibe. I would recommend it to anyone needing a time out from the rush of life, either by yourself or with someone you wish to share. Thanks Herlinda for having the courage to make a space of peace for people to share.

The room itself is beautiful, with so many windows that the room has a very open and light feel to it that was wonderfully relaxing. We made the very short walk to Waimanalo beach and were rewarded with a picturesque beach all to ourselves. The location of Hale Nalo was in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood which added to the whole theme of relaxation and peacefulness. With the rest of the island a short drive away, we could not have been happier with our accommodations. The hostess was also warm, friendly, and helpful with suggestions of things to do and places to visit. Unfortunately we did not have time for all of them, so they will have to wait until our next visit.

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) Just returned from a fantastic trip to Hawaii that ended with a 5-night stay at Hale Nalo in the top floor unit (Zen Treehouse). I can't say enough great things about this place. The proprietor (Herlinda) is so gracious and provided us with everything we could have asked for. She was always there when we needed anything, but never was intrusive. We arrived late on our first night and found the place stocked with tropical juices, coffee beans waiting to be ground and a bowl of Bananas, Papayas and Pineapple. There is a full kitchen with all the cooking equipment you'll need (including a coffee grinder). The place is essentially one huge area with a 15 ft. + high cathedral ceiling, and is divided into sections (kitchen, living area, bedroom, large walk-in closet, bathroom). It is decorated beautifully and feels more like you are staying at a friends house than in a hotel. It is very, very comfortable and we felt right at home instantly. It is well designed in that you are on the upper level of the "house" but you are not directly above anyone else (the unit is above a "common area"), so we never felt worried that we might be disturbing anyone while we were there. The grounds of the place are really nice, surrounded by trees and birds. It sounds like you're in a tropical jungle once the sun comes up! Hale Nalo is located at the end of a quiet, residential street, and is about 100-yards from a small path leading to the beach. And what a beach it is! Waimanalo Beach is a stretch of pristine white sand and the most vibrant blue water you'll ever see. Oh and I almost forgot, the beach is nearly deserted! We were laying on the beach on a Saturday afternoon and saw maybe 7 other people in about 3-hours. Gorgeous. Plus, it's only about 20 mins into Honolulu, so it's really easy to get into town. Herlinda has shelves stocked with any beach gear you could want (Chairs, beach towels, coolers, boogie boards, grass mats, etc). It's all really convenient.....(read full review at www.tripadvisor.com)

Zen Treehouse - WOW! Location - AMAZING! Stay here if you can! (review posted on www.TripAdvisor.com) Where do I start? As a former resident of Oahu returning for his wedding and honeymoon I am not sure me and my wife could have selected a better getaway on our favorite Island and on our favorite part of the Island. The accommodations at Hale Nalo are incredible! Herlinda provides you with snorkel gear, boogie boards, towels, coolers, mats and chairs to use at the beach so no need wasting money on buying that stuff at an ABC store and having to lug it back home. We left some raft floaties there for the next visitors so feel free to use those if you go ;) Finally, stay at Hale Nalo for the accomodations, the location, direct access and proximity to one of the most beautiful beaches on Oahu and the... "ZEN Tree House- tranquil, beautiful and spirited" (review posted on TripAdvisor.com) Finding solitude and a beautiful, tranquil beach on the most populated island of Hawaii, Oahu, was a refreshing way to spend our Christmas this year.

(As posted on TripAdvisor www.tripadvisor.com/hale_nalo) If you are looking for a real Hawai'ian experience away from all the glitz and craziness of Honolulu look no further. Hale Nalo is a short thirty minutes from HNL in a small local village with the most beautiful beach you could hope for. The suites are modern yet simple but clean and comfortable with everything you need in the way of conveniences. If you are going to stay for more than a couple of days I would suggest the Zen Treehouse. Urban conveniences such as dining and shopping are within short drive. Herlinda really goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable and welcomed. We will definitely be back!

(From www.TripAdvisor.com/hale_nalo) My husband and I were married two years ago and never had a honeymoon. We came to Oahu for a friend's wedding and decided to make the trip a combination visit and honeymoon all in one. We wanted to stay on the quiet side of the island as opposed to the busy, bustling, and crowded Waikiki. We expected the Zen Tree House to be nice, but it truly exceeded our expectations! A 40 second walk to a quiet beautiful beach, and nestled among a neighborhood of beach homes, the place gave me a wonderful first impression of Hawaii! The kitchen and living room are spacious, tastefully decorated, and comfortable. The high ceilings are so cool and tons of windows allow for the sounds of Hawaiian birds and gentle sea breezes to flow throughout the "treehouse" that makes it a true Zen experience! Not to mention two spacious balconies on opposite sides of the condo. There is a large bathroom, the counter is spacious, and the shower, which has a window, is made of an attractive travertine material and stone flooring that makes you feel like you're in a tropical paradise. There is a high efficiency washer and dryer for guests to use on the first floor. You get the feeling that the host really cares about her guests. There is welcoming feeling when we first walked up to the apartment for the first time. On the kitchen counter was a basket of chocolates, Kona coffee and a assortment of native fruits and a welcome letter with advice on places to go in the area. The friends of ours who were married on this trip, we snuck them in one day because we couldn't resist showing it off. They were SO impressed with the place, they said it should have been their honeymoon suite! The new bride, who is from Kailua, said that we probably picked one of the nicest vacation rentals to stay at on the island. In this fast paced world, it is so nice that you can still go to places like this, that give you that old fashion hospitality feeling. We will definitely be back again!

Nalo means; lost, vanish, disappear- and that is exactly what you get- from the "real world"- when you stay here. Quiet and lots of space to unwind, a minutes walk to the beach (if you walk slowly). I love this place, saw whales up on Makapu'u Point, you can actually take a dip in the ocean (something we're not used to in Oregon) and the host made me feel quite special. if you truly want to relax, come here. And then come back.
