Eureka! is the PREMIER vacation home on Chincoteague. Period. "Spectacular" and "Fantastic" are the words that come to mind when you consider the design of the house and its location. Our aim is that each guest also uses those words to describe their entire vacation experience.

The siting of this house is unique: You are above the "Deep Hole" at the end of Deep Hole Creek, overlooking Oyster Bay, Little Oyster Bay, Assateague Bay with vast unobstructed natural water views.

2 weddings were held here in 2010. Both brides were thrilled. We have a link to a video made one on the "Other Links" section. Other large groups hosted (in conjunction with adjacent rental houses) include corporate retreats and a yoga weekend.

Over 100 feet of frontage on Deep Hole Creek -- the pictures do not do it justice!! (Well, the video comes closer!)

The 2nd floor deck offers the most sweeping & spectacular views from any house in Chincoteague...

At ground level, there are expansive wood decks, and a long bulkhead for crabbing and tying up boats and plenty of sun or shade (with seating and dining areas) depending on your preference. Hammocks. Plus several shaded picnic table and seating areas.

And a floating dock that makes water access even easier! The floating dock is shared with Epiphany (a neighboring house), as are the water toys, which include an Old Town Canoe and a two person Old Town Kayak.

Main House: On the first level, with 9' ceilings, there are FOUR bedrooms, each with its own bath, and each with its own private balcony. All have water views. Two have water views in two directions. ONE Bedroom, designed for kids, has 4 bunk beds (3 twin, 1 full) but could handle single adults if needed. THREE BEDROOMS have KING beds. Each of the king bedrooms has custom tiled showers. One is handicapped accessible, another has a marble vanity, the third has a custom glass vanity.

There is an open breezeway deck with stairs down to the dock area as well as indoor stairs.

On the second floor, you enter directly into a large Great Room and Kitchen with cathedral ceilings, bay windows, picture windows, two large decks (one with the wide-angle view and full sun; the other covered with an outdoor grill); both have dining areas.

The kitchen is simply fabulous: Look at the photos, and read the details below.

There is also a cozy media room with a 42" flat screen TV and a full size sleep sofa. The 2nd floor bath is next door, so using this room for sleeping is attractive. Enjoy our large library of books. Many guests have commented on how much they appreciate our large collection of board games.

Verizon broadband DSL Internet with Wi-Fi. There are two wireless access points, so the signal is strong throughout the house. There is a whole house sound system with many pairs of speakers, indoors and out on the main living level. Bring your Ipod and plug it in.

Two decks open off the 2nd floor great room. One is the open deck with the wide angle views, the other is the covered breezeway deck, still with great views, but also with the gas grill. Both decks have dining tables.

Guest House, First Floor Suite (First floor of small house): Across the breezeway (cedar-shingled exterior, radial, almost two story window wall, on the left in the aerial photo). All on the main floor, the living area has sweeping water views through the stunning curved window wall. The master bedroom (king bed), boasts a LUXURIOUS bathroom with a TILED two-person shower with body jets. THERE IS a WONDERFULLY private corner WATERFRONT balcony looking south. (There are no cooking facilities in the Suite.)
More details at the DeepHoleCreek website. browse down to that link.

The guest suite is an ideal choice for the special couple... whether you are planning a Chincoteague Wedding, a Golden Anniversary, or anything in between. Email for more details..

The 2nd floor of the Guest House has two additional rooms: One is right over the creek with the best view of all, with a sleep sofa. This is best room for a mid-winter sunny afternoon. The other has two twin beds. Both rooms share a bath. Use of these rooms increases the capacity of the house to 18.

Extensive ground level wooden decks all along the bulkhead, hammocks, deck furniture make this a great area to relax in.

The ladder down the side of the bulkhead to the newly added floating dock makes boating and swimming easier.

NOTES: if you bring small children the waterside dock areas will require you to exercise constant vigilance over them. The upper decks offer more enclosed outdoor areas. Some people with small children choose not to use this house for that reason. We understand, and hope you will return when the kids are a bit older.

Call now for end of summer special rates for weeks starting August 11 and August 25.

Vacation Rental Features

  • Amenities
    • Air Conditioning : Both the Main House and the Guest House have two zone systems. All three are modern AC/heat pumps.
    • Linens Provided : Linens can be rented at an additional fee from our management company. Many guests prefer to bring their own, which is why it is broken out separately. Email for details. We have lots of nice pillows and blankets throughout the house.
    • Elevator : Coming, Spring 2012. the main house was built with an elevator shaft, so we are ready to install a 3 stop elevator there. It is happening in March, 2012. Email for details! One of the bedrooms on the first floor of the main house has a wheelchair accessible bathroom (with shower).
    • Washer : The washer and dryer are in their own spacious laundry room on the first floor next to the bedrooms. Even the laundry room has a water view! What were we thinking??? There was no way around it.
    • Dryer : We also have a clothesline, just in case you want to be green!
    • Off Street Parking : The large shell parking area between Eureka! and Epiphany is shared by guests in both houses. Eureka! has six parking places, Epiphany has 3.
    • Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer : Small boats (kayaks, canoes) can be launched directly from our dock. For larger boats, there are public ramps nearby, and the boat can be secured at our dock while you are staying here. And our driveway/parking area is plenty big enough to park the trailer.
    • Gas Fireplace (2) : There are gas fireplaces in both the main house (great room) and the guest house (living room with 2-story windows). They are NOT usable in the summer time.
  • Beds
    • King Bed (4) : 3 bedrooms in the main house and the bedroom on the first floor of the guest house have king beds. Each bedroom has its own bath. The guest suite has a 2 person shower with body jets and a water view. Each bedroom has a balcony. The bedrooms are all on the first floor, and the nine foot ceilings allowed us to have over sized sliding doors in the two rooms directly overlooking the creek. You can be in bed, and feel like you are on a boat! In the photo sections, there is a picture of each room.
    • Twin/Single Bed (2) : The second floor of the guest house has two rooms. One has two twin beds, the other has a full size sleep sofa.
    • Bunk Bed (4) : One room (we call it the kids' room) has two pairs of bunk beds. The bottom bunk on one set is full size. You can see it in one of the photos. This bedroom has the only bath in the house, and the toilet is the only one that is regular height, instead of comfort, height. It has a water view. We also placed it so it is right across from the main entrance to the house, so kids won't get lost.
    • Convertible Bed (2) : The media room on the 2nd floor has a sleep sofa, as well as all the media bling. We designed it so the door can be closed so people elsewhere in the house wouldn't need to hear the TV if it is on. But that also makes it another private sleeping area. And... the second floor bath is right next to the media room. The 2nd floor of the guest house has two rooms. One has a sleep sofa, the other has two twin beds.
  • Entertainment
    • Cable/Satellite TV (2) : The media room has a large 42" flat screen TV with a DirectTV satellite connection. We just added an electronic HD antenna device for the several local channels. Our teenager certifies that this meets requirements. There is a home theatre sound system, DVD player and all that stuff. There is also a satellite receiver and home theater system in the living area in the guest house.
    • DVD
    • CD Player
    • Stereo System
    • Music Library : In the Main house, there are many pairs of speakers built into the ceilings of the Kitchen and the Great Room, as well as on the balconies. They are all wired back to a speaker switch in the media room with a CD player and Amplifier. Most importantly, there is a wire so you can connect an Ipod/iphone/ipad/other device to the Amplifier, and play your music throughout the top floor of the house. We are also building a small music library, but since everyone now brings their own, this is not a priority. There are also lots and lots of books, for kids of all ages, for adults. Fiction and non fiction. Our game collection is really extensive, and many guests comment about how much they like that. So we keep adding more games.
  • Kitchen
    • Full Kitchen : Check out the photos of the kitchen. When I am working in it by myself, it feels too big. You can see why. But when we have lots of people staying at the house, a bunch of us can each cook up a storm and never get in each others' way. Some cook, some sit on the bar stools and keep pouring drinks. Everyone is there. Then, it is the center of the house. So, if you have friends and family who all enjoy doing things in the kitchen together, this is the place to be! Details: granite counters including curved bar area, custom cabinets, curved bar, two sinks, dishwasher, beverage cooler to save space in the refrigerator, flat surface electric cook-top, electric range. Sculptural stainless steel and glass range hood... etc. etc. Because of limitations with the septic system, there is no disposal. Sorry! There are convenient pull out trash can drawers right next to each sink. Everyone thinks this is great. We provide many upscale dishes, glasses, cooking and serving items.
    • Cooking Utensils Provided : There is everything for the gourmet cooks you bring. Really. You will quickly notice that the kitchen is stocked by people who like to cook. Every time I am in Williams Sonoma I can't resist getting new cooking toys. We have a Cuisinart, coffee grinder, two electric coffee makers, a French press pot, sharp chopping knifes, many cutting boards, extra garlic presses and cork screws, and all the pots and pans you will ever need. Seriously, if you really think you are missing something, call me, and I'll see if I can get it delivered before your stay is over. If you think we need it, then I probably want it! Or, before you arrive, ask me if we have something. If I'm not sure, I'll make sure it is there before your arrival.
    • Refrigerator : This is a "french door" style so you can open both doors at once. This is nice. The freezer is below. If you don't shut the doors, it beeps. We have an under-counter beverage cooler, so you don't need to fill the frig with drinks. Funny thing is, I don't think anyone uses it. Oh well.
    • Dishwasher : We had one guest (out of twenty five) in 2010 who called because they couldn't figure out how to run the dishwasher. Folks, this is a dishwasher. You press the button!
    • Microwave : This is a GE spacemaker model hanging under one of the cabinets. Some times the door needs to be jiggled shut before it works. Its funky, but it works.
    • Catering Available : The guests who had a wedding at Eureka! in July 2010 (Under web Links to more information there is a link to their video) used local catering services in Chincoteague, and were VERY happy. There are even pictures of the food in the video. Ask us for their contact information.
  • Outdoor Features
    • Gas/Electric BBQ Grill : The Gas Grill is on the covered deck just off the Great Room, so you can grill easily even if it is raining! Also, the propane source is the main tank for the house, so you never need to worry if the tank is going to run out. But PLEASE make sure you turn the gas valve off at the wall when you are done cooking, or you might burn the house down! Or just wonder why there is no hot water!!
    • Deck/Patio : The entire 100 foot frontage on Deep Hole Creek is a dock area. It extends all along the water's edge in front of the house and along the sides and through the breezeway. Depending on the time of day, there is shade and breeze in different places. There are hammocks, plenty of deck chairs, and a picnic table. You will spend a lot time on this dock. Please note: There are no railings on dock at the edge of the bulkhead, so small children who are not yet at the "age of reason" need to be tied up! The higher decks have railings.
    • Balcony (8) : There are lots of balconies. I almost ran out of fingers counting them! Each bedroom has one, and there are four large public ones. The 12 x 20 2nd floor deck offers the most spectacular views from any house in Chincoteague... this is NOT an exaggeration. For a better view, you will need to climb the Assateague light house!!!
    • Lanai : The 2nd floor breeze way between the two houses offers a covered seating and eating area. The gas grill is here... just steps from the kitchen. We plan to install screening here for the 2012 season The first floor breezeway between the two houses is covered, and is yet another outdoor sitting area.
    • Gazebo : Under the house, right at the water's edge, there is lots of shade during the heat of the afternoon. And there is almost always a breeze. This is where the two Hammocks are. Don't fight over them! Maybe we will get more next year. As my grandmother used to say, "You can't have too many hammocks!!"
  • View/Location
    • Waterfront, not Lake/Oceanfront. Ask for details : The house is right on Deep Hole Creek. This is a tidal creek that fills Little Oyster Bay (just beyond the marsh opposite the house) I swim in the creek (it's most fun at slack high tide), and many people canoe and kayak. There are panoramic views extending much more than 180 degrees. Assateague and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge are visible in the distance. Working watermen go up and down the creek as they go to their fishing/crabbing/oystering places. Local kayak tour guides bring their groups past the house. Tourists get lost. The bird life is amazing. There is an active osprey nest to watch in the channel just across the marsh. Bring your binoculars and sit on the deck, in the sun or in the shade, and just watch. The night sky is also stunning. Bring a telescope for the kids. Pick up some chicken necks and string, use our nets, and catch some crabs. Sitting, or actively recreating in this area is in many ways more fun than the beach.
  • Communications
    • Telephone : There is a land line. All cell carriers work well here.
    • Broadband Internet : The house has an DSL line with a wireless router, no password is required. AT&T recently upgraded their 3G internet service for Iphones in our neighborhood. I like that a lot. Verizon has always worked here. Other wireless carriers seem to work as well.
    • WiFi (Wireless Internet) : WiFi. Yes. There are two wi-fi access points (one in each wing), so access is good everywhere.
  • Other Amenities
    • Right on Deep Hole Creek, which is fabulous for boating and swimming. Extensive docks and water access. Launch your small boat directly from our dock. For larger boats, use the nearby public landings and tie them up at our deep water dock. Ideal for kayaking and other small boats. The Main house great room has cathedral ceilings; The first floor (with the bedrooms) in both houses has spacious 9' ceilings; The guest house living room has cathedral ceilings with a unique curved two-story window wall. All the baths are upscale, with custom tile work and comfort-height toilets (except the kids room). One bedroom has a bath designed to be handicapped/wheelchair accessible. We got a little carried away in the Guest Suite: It has a has a two person shower with rain showers and body jets, and a picture window (at shoulder height!) New: A floating dock, about 10' square, that floats six inches out of the water and allows people to launch and get in and out of boats & swim
  • Suitability
    • No Pets Allowed : The house right behind, Epiphany, is pet friendly (with a fee). Ask for a referral.
    • Wheelchair Accessible (may have limitations) : Coming spring, 2012: An elevator. when we built the house, we included an elevator shaft in the main house, so all we need to do is to get the equipment installed. This project should be completed by the end of March, 2012. One of the main house main floor bedrooms has a fully wheelchair accessible shower.
    • Kid Friendly : Kids love it here. You really need to watch little ones by the water's edge. But then, you'd need to watch them wherever you stay. Some people decide not to rent the house because they have kids, or grand kids they are worried about near the water. We understand.

Eureka! on Deep Hole Creek Sleeps 18 Waterfront with Elevator

Year Purchased: 1970

Why the Owner Chose Chincoteague

As time went by, maintenance on the old clam house became problematic. We decided to replace it with a modern structure, higher and drier. We were delighted when the new house offered a charm of its own, different but comparable to the charm of the old house.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Crabbing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, boating from the dock. Watching the sunrise over Assateague, and then going back to sleep.
Going to the beach at Assateague and the Chincoteague National wildlife preserve. Explore Chincoteague and Assateague via bike. Go to the Island Creamery. Get great seafood from Gary Howard--right down the street. Cook it in our fully equipped kitchen while enjoying the ever-changing view. Get take out sandwiches from Sea Star Cafe. Get BBQ from Woody's on Maddox. Go see Randy and Nancy's artwork at Clouds Gallery. Get a latte from the Main Street Coffee Shop.

B
Mainstreet, Chincoteague

The old down town: Library, waterfront park, grocery store, Movie theatre, gift shops, wine & cheese, and more. The Sea Star sandwich place.

J
Susans Seafood

One mile south of the state line on the west side of Rt 13. Susan's has the area's best selection of seafood, including fresh local fish cleaned to order.

K
Gary Howard's Seafood

The best seafood place on Chincoteague. Gary catches crabs in the bays off Deep Hole Creek, and sells them in his store. He cooks them to order, along with shrimp, etc. He is about 250 yards down the road from us. I often call to ask for a dozen crabs, cooked, and then bike down to pick them up. That's lunch! He sells tuna steaks and flounder fillets.. Google on "Gary Howard Seafood Chincoteague" for his website.

L
Solid Waste Center

Trash pickup at the house is provided as part of the rental price, but if you have really stinky stuff (diapers, crab shells), please take it here! They also have recycling, so please take your beverage containers here as well. (our trash pickup service does not do recycling..)

Owner's Map of Chincoteague

Our family has owned this place since I was a kid. For years, it was a dilapidated, but incredibly charming ancient clam house, right on the water, and, during storms, under water. I remember playing in the water as a kid, as our son (pictured in canoe) will too.

Great Place

Guest: Diesel & P (Arlington, VA)
Date of Stay: 12/29/11 Review Submitted: 01/02/12

Eureka! was perfect for our family of 11 (and a new born) to ring in the new year. The house is stocked with games and books. There are multiple decks and inside nooks for the family to spread out or larger places to gather together. The large room overlooking the water was the perfect place to play rowdy games and share quiet moments watching the sun rise. The kitchen is fully stocked and there is just about anything you could need. We all agreed we'd love to return.

Owner response:Thank you so much for your kind review. I am glad everyone enjoyed the New Year's weekend. We'd love to have you come back, in the summer or another time. Happy repeat guests are the BEST! Don't wait too long to make your reservation for next year. -blair

Summer breeze . . . makes me feel fine

Guest: Gilligan (Ohio)
Date of Stay: 07/17/11 Review Submitted: 09/13/11

We had such a lovely, memorable time at Eureka! this summer. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery from the decks and from every window in every room, especially the moon over the water at night. No one had a bad view. Everyone had plenty of privacy. The guest house was very nice. AC worked well and kept it cool. We swam off of the back deck almost every day. The water was not quite as clean as we'd expected, but it was a great way to cool down. We kayaked in the evenings in the kayak that was provided with the house. Chincoteague itself was charming. We would have ridden bikes on the island every day if we had known how great an experience that would turn out to be. The rental bikes were clean and easy to pedal and the ride was smooth. Great fun! We spent lots of time at the ocean. The only surprise was that we thought the beach was 1 mile away. That may be true as the gull flies, but it was really a 4 mile drive. Still this ended up being no problem. We liked the media room being apart from the main sitting area. The owner was very accessible by email and helpful. The best part was having plenty of room and beauty all around for a great price. I would most definitely stay there again.

Owner response:Hi Bruce, We are glad you had such a good time, and that you enjoyed swimming in the creek... which is my favorite part of being there! You are right about the distance to the beach. Google Maps shows it as 2.4 miles of town roads (speed limit 25mph, effective speed much less) to the bridge to the refuge, and another 2.9 miles of refuge roads (speed limit 15 mph, effective speed less if you are behind someone looking at every bird and pony!). We look forward to welcoming you and your friends back soon! -blair

Great house and location for Pony Week!

Guest: Todd (Kutztown, PA)
Date of Stay: 07/24/11 Review Submitted: 08/05/11

My family of four along with in-laws, my wife's 2 brothers, and their families had a great stay at Eureka. We were lucky enough to be at the house during Pony Week in Chincoteague and the location could not have been better. We were within an easy bike ride of all the action. The house itself accomodated our extended family nicely, providing us with a lot of space and lots to do right at the house. The kids enjoyed kayaking, swimming and crabbing right from the back deck. The large kitchen and eating area was perfect. Our family loves to do things together so group meals were fun and the space made it easy for everyone to chip in without bumping into each other. The kitchen is also equipped with everything you need to prepare meals. The owners have done a very nice job with this property and the good news is they are accessible so if problems arise - they want to know about it and work to fix them quickly. If our family choses to vacation in Chincoteague again - Eureka is at the top of our list of places to stay.

Owner response:Todd, We are really glad you had a great time, and we hope to welcome you back to Eureka! On Deep Hole Creek soon.

Incredible views, well appointed, lovely location, perfect for children

Date of Stay: 06/23/10 Review Submitted: 07/06/11

Eureka was a beautiful spot, with windows everywhere and situated right on the marsh. For a family with children it couldn't be a better. The dock area is perfect for crabbing, swimming, launching a kayak or canoe. Kitchen is perfect and nicely serves a large crowd.

Owner response:Ellen, I'm so glad you and your extended family enjoyed your stay at Eureka! on Deep Hole Creek. I hope you make a stay with us a family tradition. Please come back soon! I really appreciated your suggestion about the tiles in the "elevator" room next to the kitchen. They are gone, and this is now a great place for extra storage!. We hope to get the elevator installed in the next year. Thank you for choosing Eureka! on Deep Hole Creek for your vacation. -blair

Also the shells were super pretty ... - Cecilia Hello! I stayed with Cecilia and her family from Oct 29 to 31, 2010. We all had an amazing time staying here! Everything was perfect! The views are beautiful, the water beautiful, --- shells are amazing! The house is great---cozy, with a friendly feeling. Cecilia and I had a great time climbing the trees around Epiphany, and enjoying the views. Everything was WONDERFUL and I wish I could stay longer! Thank you for letting us stay! - Jessica, (age 12) Thanks again for the lovely house, views, well-equipped kitchen -- we hope to get back! - Raquel (Cecilia's mom)

Thanksgiving 2010! Staying in the two houses (Eureka! and Epiphany) with a lot of family. Parents, siblings, cousins, uncles & aunts, grandparents, and a bunch of other people I don't know how I'm related to. I got here on Wednesday and am leaving tomorrow. We drove and walked the wildlife loop a lot. We went to the Visitors Center, and went on a hay ride at 7:30AM this morning! it was freezing!. Also, when my mom tried to preset the oven to go on at a certain time it didn't work. That may just be our fault though. My grandfather's complaint is that you can't read the buttons on the coffee maker (owner's note: The coffee maker has been replaced!) Anyway, we had a great time and a lot of food!! thank you, Sarah

This is a great time to come to Chincoteague! No crowds, no mosquitos! Rainy, windy Saturday. Gorgeous Sunday. The NoVA Bird Club saw 90 species this weekend. That includes a trip to the islands of the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. A western Bluebird had been reported around Oyster for all of January, but wasn't there when NVBC arrived. Only Don's and Bill's restaurants were open. Also McDonalds. Not much choice there. But Don grows his own oysters & clams, so you are getting the real thing. Carol & I did the Sundial Bookshop on Sunday. It and the wine shop were the only ones open. We found some charmers among the new & old books. Blair-- The new shelves and TV setup are terrific! The NoVA Bird Club loved our wine & cheese party on Saturday night. Some of them have only ever stayed in motels on Chincoteague! No ponies seen. Just "piles". I walked the whole look on Sunday with Todd & Meredith. Great Day! lots of swans on the ponds. Saw: Black-capped chicadees (out of area for them!) Marbles Godwit & Pine warbler (both uncommon).

We love this house. We wish we had a house like this too. The beds are sooo comfterble (sic). The Pictures on the walls are beautiful. The TV is very helpful with the little kids. When you look out of the windows in this house you can see the beautifull nature. We had so much fun in this house!!!! -Rockville, MD "Congreshinal Lane"
