NEW in 2009: A beautiful custom-built luxury house in one of the most stunning locations on Chincoteague. New Option for 2010: A luxurious guest suite for that special couple.. from a Wedding to a Golden Anniversary.. details below.
You are perched directly above the "Deep Hole" at the end of Deep Hole creek, overlooking Oyster Bay, Little Oyster Bay, Assateague Bay and Assateague, with extensive unobstructed natural water views.
(Many other fine rentals on Chincoteague are on man-made canals with a waterview that includes houses on the other side of the canal, and perhaps an open water view at a narrow angle.) The siting of this house is unique. There is over 100 feet of frontage on Deep Hole Creek, and across the creek is marsh, bays, then Assateague... the pictures do not do it justice!!
The house was designed by Richard Vesely of Island Properties, and was completed in June, 2009. After a successful summer season, we are accepting reservations for fall weekends... when Chincoteague/Assateague are at their finest!
The 12 x 20 2nd floor deck on the North East Corner offers the most spectacular views from any house in Chincoteague... this is NOT an exaggeration. For a better view, you will need to climb the Assateague light house!!!
At ground level, there are expansive wood decks, and a long bulkhead for crabbing and tying up boats, a dock, and plenty of sun or shade (with seating and dining areas) depending on your preference. Plus a shaded picnic table and seating area.
On the first level, there are four bedrooms, each with its own bath, and each with its own private balcony. All have water views. Two have water views in two directions. Another, designed for kids, has 4 bunk beds (3 twin, 1 full) but could handle single adults if needed. Three bedrooms have king-size beds. Each of the king bedrooms has custom tiled showers. One is handicapped accessible, another has a granite vanity, the third has a custom glass vanity.
There is an open breezeway deck with stairs down to the dock area as well as indoor stairs if the weather is bad.
On the second floor, you enter directly into a large Great Room and Kitchen with cathedral ceilings, bay windows, picture windows, two large decks (one with the wide-angle view and full sun; the other covered with an outdoor grill) both have dining areas.
The kitchen is everything you'd expect: granite countertops, a horseshoe bar, two sinks, a beverage cooler, a sculptural Italian range hood, custom pendant lights, etc.
There is also a separate and cozy media room with a large flat screen TV and a sleep sofa. The 2nd floor bath is next door, so using this room for sleeping is attractive.
There is a desk nook to park your laptop and recharge cell phones. Wireless Internet. There are many built-in speakers indoors and out on the 2nd floor, so BYOM (bring your own music) on your IPod and dock it.
There are two decks opening off the 2nd floor great room. One is the open deck with the really fabulous views, the other is the covered breezeway deck, still with great views, but also with the gas grill. Both decks have dining tables.
The outdoor decks are not screened. When you are this high up, and this close to the water and wind, the bugs are seldom bad. When they are, you probably want to be inside with the AC on anyway.
The attached guest suite across the breezeway (cedar-shingled exterior, radial, almost two story window wall) will be available for an additional charge in 2010. All on the main floor, the living area has sweeping water views through the stunning curved window wall. The master bedroom (king bed), boasts a LUXURIOUS bathroom with a TILED two-person shower with body jets and radiant heat in the floor. THERE IS a WONDERFULLY private corner WATERFRONT balcony looking south. (There are no cooking facilities in the Guest Suite.)
The guest suite is an ideal choice for the special couple... whether you are planning a Chincoteague Wedding, a Golden Anniversary, or anything in between.
Other notes:
As we approach cooler weather, it is important to point out some of the energy saving features built into the house... We splurged on a layer sprayed-on closed cell foam insulation around the entire exterior skin of the house. During a classic Chincoteague nor'easter last March, this meant that the house was still warm from the residual heat from the day before, and that it was completely quiet inside while the wind was howling outside. Since we made the house so tight, we also installed energy efficient air exchangers to provide a flow of fresh air even when the house is tightly sealed. You might ask, What is the payback period? My guess is a long time... but it will make the house snug and very liveable during those winter storms. (Our earlier chincoteague house has conventional fibreglass insulation. When the wind really blows around that house, you can feel the difference..)
if you have ever built a house, you know how many decisions need to be made, from the big ones to the very little ones... We are now seeing the fruits of many decisions. We were especially pleased with how the kitchen granite counters came out, and with the choices we had made a long time ago.... There is a purple speckle in the light granite that comes close to matching the dark cabinets, which makes the whole thing sing. That's great.
I continue to be amazed by the view from the 2nd floor observation deck. I have been looking at this same view for almost 40 (wow!) years, but never from this height. It is stunning, and it changes everyday as the marsh grass turns green with the spring and the rain.
We added extensive ground level wooden decks covering the entire bulkhead, plantings, and a ladder down the side of the bulkhead to make boating and swimming easier.

Why the Owner Chose Chincoteague
As time went by, maintenance on the old clam house became problematic. We decided to replace it with a modern structure, higher and drier. We were delighted when the new house offered a charm of its own, different but comparable to the charm of the old house.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Crabbing, swimming, boating, watching the sunrise over Assateague, going to the beach and the wildlife preserve.
30 miles of undeveloped beach in the national seashore... open dawn to dusk, free parking, a lifeguarded area, Off road permits available, park ranger programs.
Owner's Map of Chincoteague
Our family has owned this place since I was a kid. For years, it was a dilapidated, but incredibly charming ancient clam house, right on the water, and, during storms, under water. I remember playing in the water as a kid, as our son (pictured in canoe) will too.
