Eureka! is simply Stupendous!!!

Truly a super house in a fantastic location! If you're looking for a large  place to gather your extended family,  or a group of friends and don't want to give up lots of amenities,  then this is the place for you. It's unique, spacious, well-designed, comfortable, well-appointed, and has fabulous views. There's no place closer to the water -- it's actually right on the water!  It's very thoughtfully equipped to handle large and multi-generational groups with an elevator, 2nd refrigerator, and even 3 coffee pots! We had a very relaxing stay in Eureka! while our house was being worked on.  We especially enjoyed watching the local watermen coming in with their crab traps, lots of birds, and being able to stargaze away from the city lights. Eureka! is such a spectacular place, that it was very difficult to leave! The Hutchings

Owner response:We are so glad you had a great time, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Eureka! on Deep Hole Creek soon. Thanks again for your kind words. -blair

Great place! Handicap friendly. Wonderful sitting room with floor to ceining wrap around windows. Great place to quietly watch the tide come and go! The TV room has a wraparound system that is better than in movie houses.

Owner response:Thanks for your comments, and for your suggestions to improve handicapped accessibility. We look forward to welcoming you back to Eureka! soon.

Excellent place to stay!

We picked this place last minute for a valentines getaway. 3 couples. it was perfect. I wish we could have stayed longer. Blair, the owner, was great to deal with and made the whole last second process a breeze. We will definately be back.

Owner response:Hi Jeremy: I'm so glad you all had a good time at Eureka! Most people come to Chincoteague in the summer, but a Valentine's getaway also works! The views of the marsh and bays are constantly changing, the closed-cell foam insulation keeps the winter winds out.. the fireplace, a fish stew on the stove... you don't need much else. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! - Blair

Great Place

Guest: Diesel & P (Arlington, VA)
Date of Stay: 12/29/11 Review Submitted: 01/02/12

Eureka! was perfect for our family of 11 (and a new born) to ring in the new year. The house is stocked with games and books. There are multiple decks and inside nooks for the family to spread out or larger places to gather together. The large room overlooking the water was the perfect place to play rowdy games and share quiet moments watching the sun rise. The kitchen is fully stocked and there is just about anything you could need. We all agreed we'd love to return.

Owner response:Thank you so much for your kind review. I am glad everyone enjoyed the New Year's weekend. We'd love to have you come back, in the summer or another time. Happy repeat guests are the BEST! Don't wait too long to make your reservation for next year. -blair

Great house and location for Pony Week!

Guest: Todd (Kutztown, PA)
Date of Stay: 07/24/11 Review Submitted: 08/05/11

My family of four along with in-laws, my wife's 2 brothers, and their families had a great stay at Eureka. We were lucky enough to be at the house during Pony Week in Chincoteague and the location could not have been better. We were within an easy bike ride of all the action. The house itself accomodated our extended family nicely, providing us with a lot of space and lots to do right at the house. The kids enjoyed kayaking, swimming and crabbing right from the back deck. The large kitchen and eating area was perfect. Our family loves to do things together so group meals were fun and the space made it easy for everyone to chip in without bumping into each other. The kitchen is also equipped with everything you need to prepare meals. The owners have done a very nice job with this property and the good news is they are accessible so if problems arise - they want to know about it and work to fix them quickly. If our family choses to vacation in Chincoteague again - Eureka is at the top of our list of places to stay.

Owner response:Todd, We are really glad you had a great time, and we hope to welcome you back to Eureka! On Deep Hole Creek soon.

Summer breeze . . . makes me feel fine

Guest: Gilligan (Ohio)
Date of Stay: 07/17/11 Review Submitted: 09/13/11

We had such a lovely, memorable time at Eureka! this summer. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery from the decks and from every window in every room, especially the moon over the water at night. No one had a bad view. Everyone had plenty of privacy. The guest house was very nice. AC worked well and kept it cool. We swam off of the back deck almost every day. The water was not quite as clean as we'd expected, but it was a great way to cool down. We kayaked in the evenings in the kayak that was provided with the house. Chincoteague itself was charming. We would have ridden bikes on the island every day if we had known how great an experience that would turn out to be. The rental bikes were clean and easy to pedal and the ride was smooth. Great fun! We spent lots of time at the ocean. The only surprise was that we thought the beach was 1 mile away. That may be true as the gull flies, but it was really a 4 mile drive. Still this ended up being no problem. We liked the media room being apart from the main sitting area. The owner was very accessible by email and helpful. The best part was having plenty of room and beauty all around for a great price. I would most definitely stay there again.

Owner response:Hi Bruce, We are glad you had such a good time, and that you enjoyed swimming in the creek... which is my favorite part of being there! You are right about the distance to the beach. Google Maps shows it as 2.4 miles of town roads (speed limit 25mph, effective speed much less) to the bridge to the refuge, and another 2.9 miles of refuge roads (speed limit 15 mph, effective speed less if you are behind someone looking at every bird and pony!). We look forward to welcoming you and your friends back soon! -blair

Chincoteague 2010

Guest: Robbie (Leesburg, VA)
Date of Stay: 03/12/11 Review Submitted: 03/12/12

We rented Eureka and Ephiphany in August 2010 and it was one of the best family vacations ever! Eureka was a standout - it had all the modern amenities (modern kitchen, comfortable Brs, clean bathrooms, internet access, media room, and the amazing view of oyster bay from the family room and the double-level decks). Able to fish and crab outside of your bedroom was amazing and really enhanced the overall experience. Taking the kayak out and paddling out on the bay was a lot of fun. Note: I could not put in the exact date of our stay since it only allows within a year, so I just picked the random date of 3/12/2011 to be able to put this review per Blair's request. We rented back in Aug 2010 under the name of 'Ker'.

Owner response:Robbie: We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at both Eureka! and Epiphany, and even more thrilled that you are planning to vacation at our house again this summer. Happy repeat guests really are the BEST! Since your last stay, we have furnished the guest house so up to 18 people can stay, added the floating dock to make getting into and out of canoes and kayaks easier, and the elevator will be installed in March, 2012. If there is anything we can do to make your stay this summer even more enjoyable, please let us know.

This is a great time to come to Chincoteague! No crowds, no mosquitos! Rainy, windy Saturday. Gorgeous Sunday. The NoVA Bird Club saw 90 species this weekend. That includes a trip to the islands of the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. A western Bluebird had been reported around Oyster for all of January, but wasn't there when NVBC arrived. Only Don's and Bill's restaurants were open. Also McDonalds. Not much choice there. But Don grows his own oysters & clams, so you are getting the real thing. Carol & I did the Sundial Bookshop on Sunday. It and the wine shop were the only ones open. We found some charmers among the new & old books. Blair-- The new shelves and TV setup are terrific! The NoVA Bird Club loved our wine & cheese party on Saturday night. Some of them have only ever stayed in motels on Chincoteague! No ponies seen. Just "piles". I walked the whole look on Sunday with Todd & Meredith. Great Day! lots of swans on the ponds. Saw: Black-capped chicadees (out of area for them!) Marbles Godwit & Pine warbler (both uncommon).

Thanksgiving 2010! Staying in the two houses (Eureka! and Epiphany) with a lot of family. Parents, siblings, cousins, uncles & aunts, grandparents, and a bunch of other people I don't know how I'm related to. I got here on Wednesday and am leaving tomorrow. We drove and walked the wildlife loop a lot. We went to the Visitors Center, and went on a hay ride at 7:30AM this morning! it was freezing!. Also, when my mom tried to preset the oven to go on at a certain time it didn't work. That may just be our fault though. My grandfather's complaint is that you can't read the buttons on the coffee maker (owner's note: The coffee maker has been replaced!) Anyway, we had a great time and a lot of food!! thank you, Sarah

Another wonderful Thanksgiving at beach. We enjoyed having all our families together one more time. The house accomodated all of us. The young ones and those that think they are still children caught lots of keeper crabs off the dock--hours of entertainment! We were joined by other family members in the other house (Epiphany) for a Thanksgiving feast to remember! Lots of leftovers for the rest of the week. The only problem was the microwave. (owners note: this is now fixed!)

What a spectacular house! Such splendid views! Fabulous kitchen! We thoroughly enjoyed our 34th annual autumn visit to Chincoteague in the best place ever. The cooks loved the fully equipped kitchen with enough counter space so all could work at once. The birders loved to practice their avocation without having to drive. The lazy among us loved to watch the sun's rise, traverse, and set from their chairs arranged inside or out. Thank you so very much.

Thank you for a most wonderful weekend in your fabulous home "Eureka!" Phil and I stayed in the Guest Suite & loved the privacy. The Great Room was enjoyed every morning & evening. The sunsets were incredible. We had three guest couples, one of which only stayed for Saturday. We all celebrated a 70th birthday of a friend at "AJ's". It was such fun, & delicious! Very nice ambiance. We all saw Chincoteague and Assateague. Very special. Saw 20 horses, lots of snow geese and other birds. Once again, we enjoyed the views immensely! Great cool weather! Thank you for everything.

Hi Blair, We want to let you know how absolutely wonderful your house is for a wedding celebration. We could not have been happier with the festivities. On Wednesday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. the ceremony took place on the guest suite side of the deck instead of the raised platform. The minister said her words would likely float away on the wind if she and the wedding party were above all the guests, as we originally planned. As it turned out, the view beyond the wedding party was delightful. The weather was very pleasant for the ceremony – very windy and not awfully hot. We were so happy that we did not see a single mosquito until Saturday night when packing up the cars. (We would have had a lesser opinion of proceedings if the bugs had been that bad during the ceremony and reception!) You might have noticed the centerpieces we had…they were filled with beach toys and Chincoteague-related items such as fly swatters and back scratchers. All the guests were encouraged to take whatever they wanted, leaving us with less to clean up. They were a big hit! This was a dream come true for all of us, especially for the bride and groom. Danika had a vision for this wedding and Eureka! was the perfect setting. Thank you for all the extra help you have given us over the past months. Eureka offers so many options for a party the size we had. Everyone on Chincoteague was so helpful. Here are some of the vendors used: · Sea Shell Café catered the wedding reception. They also made the tables, linens, chairs and bridal arch available. · Capt. Zack’s and Woody’s provided food for the rehearsal dinner. · The (ice cream)wedding cakes were from Island Creamery and were absolutely delicious! Let us know if we can answer any other questions or provide other pics or information. Thanks again for everything. Sincerely, Sandy

During our stay on Chincoteague, we have many fun adventures including going to the beach, biking 7 miles, going on the wildlife loop, mini-golfing, kayaking and visiting the wildlife refuge. these adventures would not be possible if we didn't have a great place to stay: this house! We all had comfortable rooms and the living room upstairs is cozy. We enjoyed playing your board games and are grateful for the Lord of the Rings movie. Thanks so much for letting us use your house!

Eleven people from three generations of our family enjoyed this house this week. We celebrated several milestone birthdays including a 30th and and 80th! The house provided ample space for fellowship and quality family time. We have enjoyed many parts of the islands. We drove the wildelife loop on assateague almost everyday. We played on the beach and caught crabs (little ones) off the dock. This afternoon we climbed to the top of the assasteague light house and watched egrets and falcons flying below us. The wildlife is stunning and the undisturbed natural beauty is one of the many reasons our family returns to Chincoteague. Tonight there was an eerie red sunset as bruise-colored clouds swept in from the mainland. We turned off all the lights in the house and watched the lightning. It was spectacular!! It has been 14 years since the Ohio side and the North Carolina Side vacationed on Chiuncoteague. The children who played together in 1996 are not grown women and men. It has truly been a gift for all of us to share this special place again. I am certain that future generations of our family will grow to love Chincoteague and Assateague too,. I am also certain that we won’t wait another 14 years to come back to Chincoteague and make new memories together. Thank you for sharing this magnificent house!! PS I grew up to love the natural world and study (and eventually teach) science because I grew up chasing little swimming creatures on Assateague Island! Never underestimate t epower of taking your babies outside to play! S. Hale, 32.

Eureka was a beautiful spot, with windows everywhere and situated right on the marsh. For a family with children it couldn't be a better. The dock area is perfect for crabbing, swimming, launching a kayak or canoe. Kitchen is perfect and nicely serves a large crowd.

Owner response:Ellen, I'm so glad you and your extended family enjoyed your stay at Eureka! on Deep Hole Creek. I hope you make a stay with us a family tradition. Please come back soon! I really appreciated your suggestion about the tiles in the "elevator" room next to the kitchen. They are gone, and this is now a great place for extra storage!. We hope to get the elevator installed in the next year. Thank you for choosing Eureka! on Deep Hole Creek for your vacation. -blair

Last summer, we rented both houses (Eureka! and Epiphany) for a large reunion. It is the perfect place for a reunion! The houses are beautiful and well equipped with everything you could possibly need..... exactly as reflected in the listing photos....even better. The views are gorgeous and the time went too quickly. Very relaxing on the decks or in the house looking out of the curved windows. The kitchen is awesome! We definitely want to try to return for another reunion. We would recommend these two houses to anyone.

Owner response:We are very happy that you and your friends enjoyed your reunion at Eureka! (& Epiphany) and on Chincoteague Island. We absolutely agree with you about the views from the house, especially from the curved windows. We never get tired of them. And I am constantly looking to add new toys for chefs, so nice you come you will find the kitchen even more awesome. We hope you are able to organize another reunion on Deep Hole Creek soon. My husband and I rented this house for a week-long "working" vacation--writing and photography. We were seeking quiet tranquility and we got that and more. While the photographs on the website are nice, they simply don't do the house justice. We were thrilled with the light, airy and well-appointed kitchen and the abundant pillows on the bed (a rarity for a vacation rental!). We spent many hours in the great room, gazing out the huge windows watching loons, egrets, ducks, gulls, geese and red winged blackbirds in the marsh. This house would be great for a large group (all four bedrooms have their own bathroom & deck) but it's also great for a romantic getaway. It's also very close to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which we highly recommend visiting. Don't forget your cameras and binocs!

Great Views! Best Ice Cream @ Island Creamery. If you are looking for ponies, kayak past old barn turn left then continue to cove… Must go after high tide. Free Tide Tables at Capt. Steve’s bait and tackle shop. Neighbors dock has more crabs. No fish in sight. Use bug spray on docks especially @ night.

We have enjoyed all the thoughtful amenities in this well appointed house. We have walked the beach, trailed through the woods, spied on the birds, seen the ponies and investigated the museums. We have reminisced, laughed, rad, relaxed, eaten well and leave reluctantly. Three Cousins, husbands, one nephew.

What a wonderful place! We had 4 glorious days of hiking, kayaking, sailing, swimming and beach walks. This place truly is an Epiphany! Thanks so much!

Well we had an enjoyable stay in your home. The weather was truly wonderful. No rainy days! We spent several evenings just admiring the milky way above the upper deck. Can't beat the view during the day. You can see blowing grasses and birds foraging in the marsh. At night the lighthouse sweeps it's beacon over you, while the night sky seems to be just out of reach. I guess one week is not enough to recharge our batteries. Thanks for the curtains on the doors facing the marsh.
