The Harmony Retreat is conveniently located less than 2 miles north of Mossyrock (off US Hwy 12/White Pass Scenic Byway & 20 miles east of I-5's exit 68), on the east end of beautiful Mayfield Lake in a quiet, upscale lakeside neighborhood. The west-facing custom built home has lake views from most of the rooms and from the covered deck. In the evening, watch the sun set over the glistening lake, and at night, gaze at the stars shining brightly in the night sky, unobstructed by city lights. In winter, snow sports are just an hour away at the newly-expanded White Pass Ski Resort (two new quad chairs, a new lodge, 13 new runs, 767 additional acres) and Mt. Rainier National Park.

The Harmony Retreat is large enough for a family to enjoy, yet intimate enough for a couple's romantic getaway. The upstairs "Tranquility Suite" features a queen bed with 1000-thread-count sheets, vaulted ceiling and ceiling fan, sitting area, cable TV, and a full bathroom with a soaking tub and double sinks. The adjacent upstairs open loft has a twin daybed, fine for sleeping or relaxing with a good book. On the main level, the colorful "Namaste Room" has a full bed, sitting area, and decor with an international flavor. Across the hall, the second full bathroom honors the lake setting with its rustic cabin decor.

The Harmony Retreat's Great Room invites the outside in with its two-story wall of windows facing the lake. This room features a fireplace, 32" HD LCD TV with DVD player and cable, hardwood floors, ceiling fan, and two spacious sofas (one converts to a comfortable full-size bed with thick pillow-top mattress; two twin aerobeds are also available for extra sleeping options). The large, open kitchen is fully equipped with all you need to enjoy cooking and dining at this lakeside retreat. The dining table and counter bar seat 8.

The Harmony Retreat has secure wireless Internet access, so feel free to bring your laptop or notebook. Local phone service is free; bring a calling card or your cell phone for long distance calls. Enjoy a variety of board games, books, magazines, and DVDs for all ages. Plenty of bedding is provided for the convertible beds, with total sleeping accommodations for 7, and perhaps a few more (ask about larger groups and nearby accommodations). Central heating and the fireplace create a warm ambiance in winter. Air conditioning and ceiling fans keep the home cool in the summer. There's a complete laundry room with washer, dryer, iron and ironing board too.

Outside, the 1/3-acre property features richly varied naturescaping, with stone paths, a dry creek, garden art, and many whimsical touches. Lovingly created by the original owners through years of dedicated gardening, these grounds are a retreat too, a place to become steeped in nature's beauty, while walking the paths, meditating under a canopy of tree branches, resting on a hammock, or viewing from the second floor deck. Gaze at the garden from the *new hot tub*from its covered area below the deck. Relax on weathered wood chairs on the patio, roast hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire pit, and enjoy grilling fresh-caught fish on the gas barbecue grill.

The private community dock is just a block down the street, where you can launch your motor boat for a day of fishing (lake is open for fishing year-round) or water-skiing. Or bring your jet-skis, canoe, kayak, or raft to explore the 13-mile lake and adjacent Cowlitz River canyon. Bike, jog, or walk on scenic country roads that meander through forest and meadows, where you're likely to spot farm animals, fields of flowers, wildlife, birds, and vistas of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, and the neighboring foothills. Or head out by car to visit the rural towns of Mossyrock and nearby Morton, walk through the show gardens of DeGoede Bulb Farm, take a day trip to Mt. Rainier and check out the new visitors center, in winter enjoy snow sports at nearby White Pass, go shopping at the outlet and antique stores and have lunch at historic McMenamins in nearby Centralia, view Mt. St. Helens from the northeast approach, and drive the back roads of this unique region.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2008

Our family lives in Seattle and has enjoyed staying at vacation rentals internationally that we've found on VRBO. We love the convenience and unique amenities of vacation rental homes. So we wanted to create our own unique sense of "home-away-from-home" using our travel experiences, to share with guests visiting this area.

I've been serving the rural communities of the east Lewis County area since 2005 in my spare time -- doing volunteer community and tourism development work and website development for local businesses and events, so I also wanted a place where I could stay locally for both work and leisure. Creating the Harmony Retreat has been a joyful labor of love and service, and we've been thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome guests to it for the past year!

Why the Owner Chose Harmony

Mayfield Lake is still largely an "undiscovered treasure" -- even people in nearby Centralia sometimes aren't aware of this 13-mile long glistening jewel just a short drive off of I-5! I spent more than a year looking for the perfect property to enjoy with my own family and to share with vacationers too, before finding the Harmony Retreat.

As a community volunteer for the local chamber of commerce, I was well aware of a need for more lodging options as we are regularly asked for recommendations of places to stay around the lake. So we've been happy to offer a new lodging choice for Mayfield Lake and Mossyrock-area visitors.

Through my volunteer work for the chamber, I've helped to create new local events, including the 2008 and 2009 Harmony Jazz & Wine Festival and the 2009 Mayfield Lake Summer Tunes series. It has been a joy to bring well-known jazz musicians from the Seattle and Portland areas to share their talents in such a fabulous setting, and to introduce them to this incredible location as well (they all have loved Mayfield Lake!).

The Harmony Retreat is an easy drive from Portland (about 90 minutes) and Seattle (under 2 hours) and is also just over an hour from White Pass Ski Resort. The new Mt. Rainier Visitors Center is less than an hour's drive and there are a variety of activities happening in the area all summer, including steam train rides on weekends in Elbe, the famous Loggers Jubilee in August in Morton, the Washington Hispanic Festival in Centralia in July, the Blueberry Festival in nearby Mossyrock the first Saturday in August, farmers markets in Mossyrock and Morton, and huge flea markets that line the main drag of Packwood on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Enjoy fireworks shows on the lake and in Mossyrock and Randle on 4th of July weekend too!

The Unique Benefits of this House

When my realtor showed me this home after we'd viewed dozens of others, I knew it was "the one"! Located in a quiet, upscale lakefront neighborhood, it's just 2 miles from the main highway (US Hwy. 12/White Pass Scenic Byway) and the town of Mossyrock. Custom-built by its original owners, much care went into the home's construction and its surrounding gardens. Unique architectural features provide a sense of character and class that make this home much more than a "cabin" or a "house" -- and so we call it simply the "Harmony Retreat."

Since purchasing it in Sept. 2008, my family has added unique amenities of comfort and style, including 1,000-thread-count sheets in the master bedroom, a 32" flat screen HD TV and cable, and Wi-Fi. The home and decor is uncluttered yet beautiful, in a Zen simplicity kind of way. The large covered outdoor deck has quickly become a favorite relaxing spot for guests, where they can grill on the new gas bbq grill, rest on the hammock, read, drink wine, and relax on comfortable chairs while enjoying views of the lake across the street, and the scenic foothills nearby.

Since opening for guests in April 2009, Harmony Retreat has hosted couples celebrating anniversaries, young families considering relocation to this unique rural area, active kayakers and fishing enthusiasts, and multigenerational family gatherings. Whether you're a regular visitor to Mayfield Lake looking for a new place to stay, or someone looking for a completely new place to explore in a pristine, mountain/lake setting not far off the beaten path, we sincerely welcome you to the Harmony Retreat!

This place is perfect! The hot tub and fireplace and proximity to the lake made it one of the most relaxing and romantic mini vacations i have ever been on. I could not have asked for a better deal on the house for the 3 nights we stayed. I would recommend this to all my friends and family and to anyone thinking about staying here. I cant wait to come back and stay longer next time. :)

Relax and enjoy!

Guest: Martyn & Judith L. (-)
Date of Stay: 09/23/11 Review Submitted: 10/02/11

We had a wonderful time. I came with the intention of catching up on some work away from the office; that didn't work out too well. Seems I was so comfortable and relaxed all weekend, I caught up on some relaxation and rest instead. The house was so comfortable I didn't think of anything but "relax and enjoy," "relax and enjoy." Many thanks for sharing this wonderful retreat.

Wonderful 2-week stay

Guest: Bobby J. & Nancy H. (-)
Date of Stay: 11/12/10 Review Submitted: 09/01/11

Thank you for providing a relaxing place for our 2 weeks here. It is only 5 minutes from the family that we were visiting. Sorry to have brought an IL winter snow with us! It has been an interesting 2 weeks with earthquake, windstorm and snow. (The same things that we have back home only our earthquakes are very mild, we don't usually feel them.)
