Location: Falmouth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 8)
Relax! Ocean breezes caress this lovely Cape Cod home, located just off the entrance to Falmouth Harbor. Listen to ferries whistle as they carry vacationers to and from Martha's Vineyard, just a 45 minute boat ride away. Start the day with breakfast in the sunlit dining room and watch the masts of sailboats as they exit the harbor. View the Vineyard in the distance.
Enjoy a short walk to Falmouth's quaint Main Street through tree-lined neighborhoods, and sample the eclectic fare at some of the area's best restaurants. Swim at Falmouth's wonderful nearby beaches. Bike along the Shining Sea Bikeway, through salt ponds, along the shore, and into Woodshole.
Or stay close to your home-away-from-home and catch some rays in the sunny and private backyard or enjoy a book on the wisteria-shaded patio. This true Cape Cod-style home is nestled in a quiet neighborhood and is a perfect base for either an active stay, a lazy and restorative old-fashioned summer vacation, or a little of both!
Sunny Days:
We hope that you have lots of sun on your vacation! The yard and surrounding roads are lush with greenery and flowers. Walking and biking are great ways to see the area-there is so much that is nearby. The Shining Sea Bikeway wends its way 3 miles past Falmouth's beaches, cottages, and ponds.
Whether you're a nature buff or shopper, you can find things to do within a mile of the house. Fishing boats, ferries, and scenic sails depart from the harbor daily. There are exclusive shops on Main Street, and the Falmouth Commodore baseball team plays 2-3x per week in summer.
The family-friendly Surf Drive beach is within walking distance and children will enjoy exploring the tidal pools for a variety of sea life and beautiful shells; many other beaches are a short drive or bike ride away. After biking or the beach, a great place to have a casual meal is at the Clam Shack; it's at the end of the street and has picnic seating right on the water - a perfect spot to watch the boats come and go!
Rainy Days:
We've tried to equip the house with lots of rainy day ideas and activities. There are two televisions with cable, but we also have many games and puzzles that will keep a wide range of ages occupied. A rainy day is also the perfect time to take advantage of the wonderful shops and bookstores on Main Street - a great place to go souvenir hunting or to find the next vacation book. Woodshole offers an interactive aquarium. In nearby Mashpee, there are movie theaters, a kids' craft center, more shops, and restaurants.
Excursions:
If you're feeling adventurous, there are several recommended day trips. Taking a 45 minute ferry to Martha's Vineyard from the harbor, with or without bikes, is a refreshing side trip - the Vineyard's carousel, gingerbread cottages, winery, bike paths, and scenic vistas are all memorable. Heritage Plantation in Sandwich (a 45 minute drive) is packed with history, gorgeous grounds, and an antique auto museum.
The Cape Cod Central Railroad in Hyannis runs scenic and dinner trains to the Cape Cod Canal and back. Provincetown and the National Seashore beaches are only 1 1/2 hours from Falmouth, and offer whale watches, dune tours, more bike paths, and funky shopping areas.
Location Info:
Falmouth Harbor is half a block away from the house. In the evenings, it's fun to walk around the harbor and look at the variety of yachts moored there. Night life and dining are a 10-15 minute walk to Falmouth's Main Street, but the well-appointed kitchen and dining room make it easy to have a relaxing evening at home; or use the gas grill and enjoy dining al fresco on the covered patio! On Thursday nights, pack a picnic to take to the band shell located next to the harbor for the summer band concerts.
Bring bikes to enjoy the natural beauty nearby, or take them on the ferry to explore the easily accessible islands. The route of the famous Falmouth Road Race, which takes place in early August, runs by the end of the street. As you can see from the map, there is a lot to see within an hour or two of Falmouth itself. At the house, there is an updated guidebook with information about recreation, excursions, dining, and whatever else you need to make your vacation memorable and fun.
Avoid the crush of Route 6 traffic heading out toward Hyannis and beyond! Falmouth is off of Route 28 and is largely exempt from the worst of the traffic jams that clog the Sagamore Bridge. Less than 1 1/2 hours from Boston and about 2 hours from Central Massachusetts, the Bourne Bridge transports you away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and congestion of tourist centers to a less hectic pocket of Cape Cod. The rhythm of the boats, the gentle lapping of the waves, the hypnotic fog horns in the night - all are reminiscent of a less connected and slower pace of life. Treat yourself!
