Location: Hovland, Minnesota, USA (17 Miles West of Grand Marais)

Accommodations:  Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Away from the pleasant clutter of Grand Marais, the drive back and forth to Hovland is almost traffic-free and fast. Hovland is also nicely close to Grand Portage.

The most beautiful stretch of the beautiful Great Lakes, the North Shore of Lake Superior offers a truly uncluttered, authentic big lake/big woods vacation. Nothing urban or suburban, here! You'll walk the (safe) forests on a few of the 400 miles of hiking trails, poke around the stores and restaurants in the town of Grand Marais nearby, sit on the shore, and then see more nighttime stars than ever in your life (maybe even the Northern Lights).

Our private shoreline is flat ledgerock, easily accessible. (Nowhere on the North Shore is there "beach sand.")

Our Guesthouse sleeps 5, with a sweeping lake view. The decor, in handcrafted hardwoods, is light and airy and includes a large living room/dining room with fresh wicker and wooden furniture, and an ample kitchen fully equipped, and a washer-dryer. Everything is here!

Our second VRBO website describes the main house nearby on this more than two acre wooded, Lake Superior property. The two structures are not attached and are completely private from each other - they can be rented separately or together.

Judge Magney State Park
Only 4.5 fast miles away to the west, lovely groomed trails lead to waterfalls, a canyon, then along the river.

Kadunce
Only 10 quick miles away to the west, a smaller river winds through the northwoods with several wooden bridges.

Grand Portage Fort and Interpretive Center
Just 17 miles to the east, this living history center has a full fort, wigwams, authentic birch bark canoes, and, nearby, the Pigeon River waterfall.

Grand Marais
To the east 17 miles, this town has the feel of a frontier, but with two different boat tours, four great places to eat (and several good ones), and Sivertson's Art Gallery. Stroll out Artist's Point, too.

Chicago Bay Mercantile
At 1.5 miles away, this friendly roadhouse has a grocery and a small deli with great sandwiches and pizza.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2007

Growing up in the suburbs, we've always loved the Great Lakes. Not puddles, they are our "inland sea," the most wonderful freshwater resource on the surface of the Earth! Though we once owned a place on northern Lake Michigan, we've switched allegiance to the bigger, wilder, even better Lake Superior.

Why the Owner Chose Hovland

We chose the North Shore of Lake Superior because of its extraordinary natural beauty, in a whole different dimension from our pleasant suburban life. Whether we're hiking, watching wildlife, relaxing by the lake, eating at the Angry Trout or Crooked Spoon restaurant, or talking quietly by the fire, we just love it! Forget all the "screens" of your life and look at all the stars instead!

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

The Hovland area of the North Shore is even more pristine and private than the nearby "metro" of Grand Marais, Minnesota (population under 4000). If you look (carefully) from only a couple of places on our property, you'll be able to spot another house. On our refrigerator, you'll find info about our favorite trails, places to eat, and more. You'll feel invigorated by the sound of the waves, the smell of the woods, and the sight of ravens, bald eagles, white pines, and endless birch trees, maybe even the river otters who come out on the "big lake" to fish - and play wrestle!
