Location: El Cuyo, Yucatan, Yucatan, Mayan Riviera, Mexico (2.5 Hr Drive from Cancun in Rio Lagartos Natural Reserve)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Keywords: Beach House
Tana Pepem, or "House of Butterflies" in Mayan, is a spacious beachfront house ideal for families or friends wanting to relax and enjoy nature. Only 2.5 hours from Cancun, it is easily accessible from its international airport. Perfect for long meals, beach walks, shell seeking, bird watching, and dreamy sunsets.
El Cuyo is a small, non-touristic fishing village in the uppermost tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, within the natural reserve of Río Lagartos, close to several Mayan ruins, cenotes and colonial towns. We recommend renting a car in order to tour the area and feel the culture. It is a very safe and quiet town that allows visitors to witness and live rural Mexico. All restaurants serve local cuisine, seafood being the specialty!
The house is built so that all rooms have a view of the ocean. Kitchen and living room look out to the outdoor beachfront terrace equipped with lounge bed and hammocks. The downstairs bedroom is in the back, but built on a higher level with indoor ocean view windows. Upstairs bedroom is completely private with its own oversized terrace with lounge bed, dressing room and bathroom.
There are many fun activities at El Cuyo, including swimming, tours to see flamingos, salines, shark-whales (July to Sept), fishing, ATV rentals, and many other outdoor activities.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
Yahaira and Gerardo live in Cancun but sought out the perfect beach in the area to get away from all the hussle and worries and just RELAX. We built this house in 2007 and go every chance we get! Our 4-year old daughter Andrea is a big fan.
Why the Owner Chose El Cuyo
We've been visiting the area since more than 10 years ago, since good friends already had a vacation home here. We love the place and as soon as the first opportunity opened, we bought an oceanfront lot and Yahaira's best friend designed the house entirely to our taste and needs. It's good to know arquitects! We built the house in 2007.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Relaxation. El Cuyo es a place where you can definitely get away from it all- it's another reality. Whether you choose to stay at home all day and just lounge around, or you decide to be adventurous in the nearby natural reserve, you definitely RELAX.

We rent this house for a week and everything was perfect. We are a family with two girls (10 and 14). Everybody loved the location: a small and quiet village where you can find all you need to cook or do some activities. The house, just in front of the sea, is beautiful, well decorated and offers all the facilities you need. But there's something more! The couple who rent the house is so generous and attentive to all your needs. It's a safe and wonderful place and we were... sad to quit! Just rent it!!

The Beach is just Amazing in El Cuyo, we could walk forever and never see anyone. If you would like to get away from the tourists in Cancun, this is the place to be. We loved the quaint village of El Cuyo, the locals were very friendly and helpful, and the small home buisness restaurants were just great! The food was fantastic. The house is located right on the beach and Sara the housekeeper was always available to take care of our needs or troubles, we had some power and water issues, however she resolved them as quick as possible. The home is very secure and has all the basic amenities, however bring yourself some books or board games for entertainment in the evenings. The balcony off the master bedroom is a great place to spend a night sleeping under the stars... absolutely amazing. We would recommend this home to anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing vacation surrounded by nature and the sea at its Best!

This charming house RIGHT on the beach was exactly what we needed. Our family of four stayed for a week and without internet or television, we had our teenagers all to ourselves. The kitchen is stocked with all the tools you need to cook at home. The beach is 35 miles long and after a handful of houses next to Tana Pepem, there is nothing but open beach for miles and miles. We were there to kiteboard and it was PERFECT! As there was barely a soul on the beach, we could launch and land directly in front of the house. The beach has a long sandbar, making for safe swimming with small play waves. One disclaimer: as El Cuyo is a fishing village and not subsisting on a tourist-driven economy, so there is no one to clean the beach (the pricey resorts send hordes of workers out to rake the seaweed everyday and to pick up the plastic bottles that float in from the Gulf, but even without this the beach is fabulous). The town has little to offer except a couple of great, affordable restaurants. Bring your own alcohol, games, books and all the food you will need except seafood and tortillas, which are readily available in town. We recommend taking the dirt road into the Ria Lagartos Biosphere, where you can view an amazing assortment on wildlife. The road starts in downtown El Cuyo and any car can handle it. We took a day trip to Chichen Itza with a stop at a cenote in the charming colonial town of Valladolid. I highly recommend Tana Pepem to anyone looking for an alternative to the usual tourist traps. The owners and their in-town managers were exceptionally helpful and friendly.

Peace and tranquility personified with beautiful endless beach 30 seconds from the front door. Clean tidy home with an outstanding master bedroom overlooking swooping pelicans and the sea as far as the eye can see. Great little village with friendly people and more fresh fish than you could ever eat. Highly recommend to all that like peace and quiet in genuine rural setting and very few tourists.
