When we were first invited to view Treetop House I was immediately struck by the sheer size of this uniquely remodeled Dutch Colonial home. Then there was the OMIGOSH moment when I realized the home was situated on a hillside behind the waterfront bluff properties of Port Angeles, with the Olympic Mountains and Freshwater Bay/Strait of Juan de Fuca for its backdrops. On your approach the driveway splits in two with parking for the downstairs apartment and main floor of the house on two different tiers. The oversized stained glass front door invites you in and the sparkling, honey toned wide-planked hardwood floors seem to capture the sunlight in its warmth. Please note-to accommodate twelve guests rather than nine the additional downstairs apartment with queen bed and couch must be rented as well, for an additional $150/night.
The main level of the house contains a large Great Room that encompasses friendly sitting, dining, kitchen, woodburning fireplace and breakfasting areas as well as a full bathroom. The entire east side of the house has a large deck leading from the kitchen and living room areas to an outdoor dining area and there is a northern deck as well on this level of the house.
The property would easily accommodate a larger group for an evening of entertaining-a wedding rehearsal, a birthday, anniversary or medium sized wedding. (Please contact us for details, additional charges are involved).
Up a flight of stairs (there are no bedrooms on this level of the house) one can go to the left to the three bedrooms or down a short flight of stairs to an enormous gaming room with a bar, pool table, television, gaming table and a small alcove for the quiet watcher or bookworm. From this room you can walk out to a large outdoor space with chiminea for added night time warmth while star gazing. The Master Bedroom has a king bed, en suite access to the bathroom, small television and windows facing east for sunrises over the mountains. If you are more the night owl and sunrise isn't in your vocabulary, close the blinds, forget sunrise and enjoy the private northwest balcony with a glass of wine, soft words, a warm caress and spectacular sunsets. This view has a sweeping view of the grounds, the shipping lanes in the Strait of Juan de Fuca as well as snow-capped mountains of Vancouver Island. Careful watchers may see Orcas, Grays or a submarine gently gliding by. The middle bedroom has a queen bed facing the east with Olympic Mountain views and a wooden staircase leads up to the Eagle's Nest. This nifty nook is at the very tippy-top of the house with windows on all sides. It can be used as a sleeping area for semi-independent children who might need mom and dad nearby (but can handle a flight of stairs) or as a quiet conversation and reading room away from the rest of the group. The Red Room is nicely appointed with King bed, again with eastern and southern mountain views and is L-shaped, with a twin bed tucked around the corner. It is suitable for a younger child or perhaps used as an over sized space for opened luggage.
The owner of the property is an arborist who has sculpted the lot to create spectacular views from every room. There are level parking areas and visiting/partying/picnicking outdoor areas.
The house is at the top of the hill and the owner has carved a gentle switchback trail into the hillside to allow a short cut to the beach. The property overlooks one of the loveliest neighborhoods of Port Angeles with magnificent homes which makes your morning walk to the beach exceptional. The beach is a few blocks away but the ocean is visible from some east and all north windows. You could walk there (downhill is so easy, isn't it?) or drive to the beach parking lot with all your shovels and buckets and chairs. This is a clamming and shellfish area. The beach area, known to locals as Freshwater Cove, is sheltered from a lot of the western winds and there is a very gradual drop-off, making wading safe. Although I (the property manager) live on the same body of water, this part of the beach is much more accessible with lots of sandy beach and gentle waves. At a minus tide you can walk out to the sea stack.
If wildlife is more your thing be assured that deer, rabbits, hawks, ravens and bald eagles consider the property part of their daily appointed rounds.
If more room is required, below the main floor there is a studio apartment with 800 additional square feet of space. It has a separate kichen, bathroom, sleeping and sitting area. This is a great place to put someone in the group who might get overwhelmed by the noise of the rest of the party and appreciate a getaway spot.
This property lends itself to entertaining--picture a Thanksgiving weekend with all the family away from the distractions of city life or a Christmas gathering with the tree already up, waiting for presents. An outdoor wedding would be absolutely spectacular with all the photo opportunity spots available on the property. Additionally, for those of you unencumbered by children it is so spectacular here in May and September--the weather is still phenomenal, in May spring is here and in September we still have the warmth of summer without the crowding of the summer people.
One of the neater things about renting a property west of Port Angeles is that if you are heading west to the Makah Reservation, the coast beaches, Forks and the Rain Forests, you are 30 minutes closer each trip west than if you stayed in town and 50 minutes closer than booking a house in Sequim.
