Bandon cottage description

The Irish Cottage is located 5 minutes by car from the friendly little tourist town of Bandon-by-the-Sea (named by Lord George Bennet, after his hometown, Bandon, Ireland).

The Cottage was built by hand in Prosper Village one hundred years ago by adventurous Irish immigrants who worked in the fish cannery, sawmill, and shipyards right on the Coquille River (a one minute commute!). It is said that in those days, the salmon were so thick in the river, that you could walk across the river on their backs. A bit of Irish blarney? We have the photo to prove it!

Residents of Prosper Village also worked in the shipyards on the Coquille, building ships to ferry passengers and produce upriver to Coquille, as well as ocean-going vessels for the fishery and lumber trade.

When the Cottage was built, there was no electricity in the area. The family cooked and heated with a wood burning stove, read by candlelight, and used the outhouse behind the house (you can still find the concrete path that led to the outdoor facilities!). Prosper Village had a school, a Post Office, and a General Store. Travel into Bandon, three miles downstream, was done on foot or by boat on the river.

A succession of interesting families have lived in the Irish Cottage, including that of Mr. Hall, who made fishing lures by hand. The Cottage is a sensible, sturdy, and practical home (but now updated with modern amenities for your convenience).

Bandon is a quaint beach town of 3000 friendly year-round residents. We are also located a 5 minutes' drive from world class golf and dining at Bandon Dunes.

The Cottage has been set up for vacationers with children and pets. The yard is fully fenced, and kids love to ride the tricycles around and around on the wooden sidewalk which surrounds the house. In the old days, similar wooden sidewalks linked the houses of the neighborhood with each other and with the main road, so that ladies could keep their hems clean.

Inside, there are movies, games, books, and activities to keep everyone busy and happy after a fun day exploring at the beach.

In addition to beds for big people, the Cottage has a portable playpen, and a highchair. All big beds are made with an electric blanket, so you can snuggle in and let the frogs and surf sounds sing you to sleep.

Once you make the Irish Cottage your personal vacation home, you'll never want to stay anywhere else! (Unless you prefer the Swedish House next door!).

              Car: Necessary

Permit me to plan a perfect Bandon tourist day for you! After you awake to sunlight streaming through the alder trees, get dressed (don't forget your windbreaker and hat) and make the 5 minute drive into Old Town. You may pass fishermen on the river in their little boats, pulling shiny salmon out of the water. You will also pass cranberry bogs, and may see farmers with odd machines harvesting the fat little red fruits.

Go to the Bandon Coffee Cafe for a perfect cup of coffee or tea, perhaps get a homemade cinnamon roll or egg muffin. Grab a tide table and say hello to Margaret for me! Leave your car where it is and stroll through Old Town, go into the toy store for gifts to take home, and don't miss the Second Street Gallery for amazing, beautiful art pieces and quite affordable handmade jewelry. Get some candy at the old fashioned candy store, and back in the car!

Drive South on 101, make a right on 11th street, and head west until you reach the Pacific Ocean. Fortified with your coffee and cinnamon roll, and zipped up in your windbreaker, head down the stairs and out onto the beach for some exploring. Keep an eye out for tsunami debris in the form of pop bottles with Japanese writing. You may well be the only people on the beach, but you won't be alone! Harbor seals, puffins, red fox, and sea lions are commonly sighted. Mornings are best for the beach because the wind hasn't picked up yet.

Back up those stairs (yes, you have burned off the cinnamon roll by now), into the car, and continue south on 101 about 10 minutes to the West Coast Game Park Safari. Prepare to be mobbed by the friendly goats and hungry chickens, and listen for the announcements for baby leopard and bobcat holding time, when you can hold and take pictures with the most adorable baby animals.

Now it's time for lunch! Wash your hands and go get in line at Bandon Fish Market by the boat harbor, for fresh fish and chips. If it's close to low tide, send someone in your party over to Tony's Crab Shack to rent some crab rings. Maybe you'll catch your own dinner off the dock!

Stop by the fudge shop across from Tony's for a wee bit of fudge to keep up your strength for crabbing.

If you have time, go book tomorrow's charter fishing adventure. You are guaranteed to catch loads of fish, not far off the coast (I personally guarantee it).

Keep crabbing until high tide. There's a large pot in the house to cook your crabs. If not, go next door and ask to borrow theirs.

Alright, the sun is going down. Jump back in the car and drive west through Old Town to the beach. If you look at the ocean where the setting sun is making it all shiny, you may see whales spouting. January is the best month for whale watching. If you see one pod, look for other groups as well... one day I saw three separate pods at once!

It's finally evening... take all your postcards, candy, earrings, toys, leftovers, and all the sand in your shoes back to the Norwegian House, dump them all off, and head to Bandon Dunes Golf Course, just 5 minutes North on Highway 101. McKees' Pub has delicious Irish pub fare, a full bar, lots of sports on the big screens, loads of very loud golfers, and a big roaring fireplace outside (bring your cigars, I guess). You don't have to dress up... in Bandon, if your clothes are clean, that's fancy enough.

There! You have had a wonderful day in Bandon. Now go look at the vrbo listing for the Swedish House... I'll plan a different but equally wonderful day for you there!

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: I am a 56 year old mother of 4, and grandmother of 5 boys. My ancestors came from Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, and Norway. I grew up on the West Coast and have a Biology Degree from Portland State University. I enjoy remodeling homes, interior decorating, photography, cooking, beach walks, gardening, flower arranging, historical research, and water coloring.

              Why the Owner Chose Bandon:
I wanted to own this charming little home the day I set eyes on it! We removed modern windows and put old recycled windows back in place, removed modern siding to reveal original ship-lap wood, stripped floor coverings to reveal original local wood floors. Soon it will be redecorated in honor of the spirit of Irish settlers of Bandon, Oregon. Bandon has such a wonderful climate, fresh ocean air, and friendly people. There's no better place on earth!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
I enjoy the darkness and silence at night at the cottage, and how soft and cozy the beds are. The Milky Way is easy to see, and in the morning, flocks of crows, seagulls, and pairs of great blue herons and bald eagles fly overhead on their way to and from the ocean. One of my daughter's friends was visiting from California. We were out in the fresh ocean air of the Cottage, and she said, 'this is the first time I have felt that everything was real'. Well said.
