Ananda, a stone’s throw from the Snake River on six acres of open land, balances the spare, clean lines of modern design with the rich colors and textures of reclaimed materials – a signature of the renowned designers, Berlin Architects. Thick old beams salvaged from barns, speckled Montana stone, a weathered tin roof, and wide, rosy-gold floorboards tell an old American story, while the soaring spaces and “spread eagle” layout set Ananda firmly in the 21st century. The house is a series of handsome, weathered buildings connected by glass corridors; as one walks through the house from wing to wing, one passes seemingly through the outdoors. The high mountains, the long valley, the woods and wildlife become part of the interior life of the house, a gorgeous, natural transition from space to space. Wide, furnished stone terraces and covered porches soften the progression from house to land.
Ananda – a Sanskrit word for “bliss” - is a study in fabulous materials and luminous finishes. Sinks are shaped of molded stone, walls are textured with natural fibers, sofas and chairs are upholstered in rich fabrics and soft leathers. The two-storey great room, with its huge wood-burning stone fireplace and staggering view of the Grand, is the hospitable hub of the house. Heavy, hand-hewn beams support the ceiling, and the tall airy space echoes the infinite sky outside. At one end is a fully-stocked bar with refrigerated wine storage, assorted glassware and supplies. The room spills over with sunlight. In the living room, as in the rest of the house, fine antiques and vibrant modern pieces are perfectly in accord.
In Ananda’s state-of-the-art kitchen, a large, stone-topped center island serves as the perfect springboard for take-what-you-want breakfast buffets and casual evening hors d’oeuvres. The kitchen has everything from a six-burner Wolf range with a built-in grill, and dual Sub Zero refrigerators, to a Miele espresso machine and a walk-in pantry. The intimate dining room is open to the kitchen and a terrace; the textured walls and tall windows make the dining table seem as if it stands at the foot of the mountains. There is a media room just off the kitchen. It has a huge sofa, a day bed, deep armchairs and large flat screen tv. Doors lead out to the terrace and the great wide open valley; there is a full bathroom across the hall. Further along are a wonderful, well-equipped office which comprises the whole east end of the house and is walled by glass on three sides, and – apt in a house named for happiness - a small, quiet yoga room.
From the foyer, a second window-walled hallway leads to the western wing of the house and the master bedroom suite. The suite is a splendid and open succession of vaulted rooms: the bedroom - with a king size leather bed and a gas fireplace - where enormous windows hold a panorama of Wyoming, and old beams form the high peaked ceiling; a private study with a large flat screen tv; double dressing rooms; and his-and-her marble bathrooms with a two-sided steam shower between them. Just outside, the Grand Tetons, pinked with early sun, herald the day.
A stylish, open metal staircase leads up from the foyer to the second floor, where a spacious landing acts as den, bar and sitting area and has a television and morning coffee provisions. The landing is a shared, communal space between Ananda’s three upstairs bedrooms. At the end of a hallway, two grand double doors open to the second master suite. Here a king bed faces a gas fireplace and a television; a wide eastern view hangs below the vaulted ceiling. The suite has a private bath with a jetted tub and separate shower. The two guest bedrooms have queen beds, flat screen TVs, private bathrooms with showers and double sinks; the north-facing bedroom has its own balcony. From here, the world seems made of mountains, ski slopes and sapphire sky.
Ananda is on the “West Bank” – the west side of the Snake River – in a locality known for its fine houses and big lots. Wildlife abounds here: eagles, osprey, owls, fox, coyote, elk, moose and even an occasional bear or moose may visit the Ananda property throughout the day. The wild, astounding Wyoming landscape spreads out in every direction. Winter skiing is just a five minute drive away; a slopeside hotel could not have you on the trails any quicker. The Grand Teton National Park is equally close, with all of its endless summer possibilities. And yet, since this is Jackson Hole, wonderful restaurants and local markets are just down the road as well. But back on the terrace at Ananda, with the Grand mighty against the sky, Wyoming seems to belong to you.
