Sunny Knoll is a great location, a ten minute drive to both Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor.Escape the crowds and enter your own world, up a winding private drive through old growth forest, you pop out above it all in a very tranquil twenty acres of glacial scoured meadows with spectacular views across the water to Vancouver Island.
The suite is a wing of a private home. It offers three private entrances, two bedrooms, a deck, wood fired sauna, and large library. Outdoors there is room to roam and explore with rope swings, a hammock, and tree house, as well as a half court with ping pong.
If you want to feel "away from it all" this is the place for you. The combination of privacy and extensive views is unique.
Mt. Rainier is visible to the Southeast and the lights of Victoria, British Columbia twinkle in the West. The Suite's unique location provides stunning views of both sunrises and sunsets. Relax and enjoy the ambiance in your own private hot tub. Resident deer are often seen browsing in the yard.
At night the stars blanket the sky and lights of passing freighters dance along Haro Strait below. On foggy nights and mornings you can hear the distant call of the Limekiln State Park lighthouse foghorn.

Year Purchased: 1987
As a an educator and writer I travel extensively. When I am home I get the feeling of continued travel by hosting people in my guest suite. I enjoy facilitating guests vacations and helping them get the most out of their time on the island. As a long term resident of San Juan Island I have plenty of suggestions for activities! I raised my family here at Sunny Knoll, and I enjoy hosting families with children and seeing them explore and play around the mountain top.
Why the Owner Chose Friday Harbor
I grew up in Portland, Oregon and up my family would charter sailboats in the islands in the summers. I thought the San Juan Islands were paradise, and I moved here at age 24 to live my dream life. I can't imagine ever moving away from my private mountain paradise. After my children left home I opened the Guest Suite so others could enjoy this special place.

I have stayed at Liza's a few times now. It's a great spot to get away with family for the summer time. Lots to do, great walks straight out your door and incredible views. The beds are super comfortable. I've also just enjoyed going with a friend to get away for a slow and relaxing weekend. You will not believe all the stars that join you at night. Plus the sauna and hot tub are a great bonus for any guest.

A Hidden Gem in the hills

We stayed at Sunny Knoll in July 2010 and found it be a wonderful home away from home. The pictures on the website don't do it justice. It is a perfect vacation spot, tucked away in the hills on San Juan Island with breathtaking views of the island. The living quarters are spacious, clean and filled with books and games for your enjoyment. Sunny Knoll is complete with an outdoor ping pong table, a swing, tree house, and a hot tub. You can enjoy a walk around the property and catch a glimpse of all the natural wildlife and plants. Our family of five took in many of the local attractions during our stay, which were short, easy side trips due to the convenient location of Sunny Knoll. Traveling to the north part of the island we visited Roche Harbor, Westcott Bay Reserve Sculpture Park, the English Camp, and hiked up Mt. Young. Along the western edge of the island we spotted seals and dolphins at Lime Kiln Point State Park and kayaked from San Juan County Park. We were immersed in a sea of purple at Pelindaba Lavender Farm on our way to the southern part of the island. We hiked from the American Camp, along the South Beach and out to Cattle Point where we saw bald eagles and red fox. We enjoyed the local fare in Friday Harbor where we watched the ferries come and go. Each day ended with a soak in the hot tub at Sunny Knoll and a good night's rest in very comfortable beds. I would highly recommend this vacation spot to anyone who is looking for some peace and quiet among nature and beauty. Liza, the owner, was helpful in answering all our questions. We hope to get back to San Juan Island sometime and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else but Sunny Knoll!

A magical place

Our family (two adults, two children) has stayed at Sunny Knoll three times and every stay has been great. The house sits on a beautiful knoll a short ways up a mountain off the road between Friday Harbor and the west side of the Island. The property is beautiful, with unobstructed views of the forested hills and peeks of Haro Strait and Vancouver Island. The guest suite is spacious and has a warm, personal feel. Liza, the owner, is a wonderful host. She always makes sure the hot tub (which is just off the deck outside of the guest suite) is heated and ready for use before our arrival and she goes out of her way to make sure we're all comfortable. The property is absolutely great for kids. There's a hammock, swing, outdoor ping pong table, tree fort, one room cabin, and lots of nature to explore. The location makes it really easy to get to the County Park and whale watching park on the West, to Roche Harbor, or back to Friday Harbor. We'd highly recommend this place for a great winter or summer getaway and base for exploring San Juan Island.
