“MI CASA ES SU CASA.” You’ve probably heard that description of Mexican hospitality, “MY HOME IS YOUR HOME.” If you have opened up this website it is most likely because you are considering our home, LA CASA QUE CANTA (The House that Sings), as your home for a month or a week or as little as three days. To help you with your decision, we’ll tell you about our villa.

When we were in our thirties, we had three small children, very little money, and no home of our own. (Melissa was a stay-at-home mom studying to be a social worker. Bill was a minister; we lived in a parsonage.)
We bought property and built a small home on Cape Cod. That home became a haven for our family....and also for many other families who rented it. Furthermore, it was the location for retreats of all sorts of groups, for weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, and gatherings of friends.
Three years ago – 2006 – we realized the house no longer worked for our family. Our sons lived on the West Coast with their young families and it was too difficult and too expensive to fly back East. We decided to sell and bought land in San Pancho. Then, at one last gathering on the Cape, we had a campfire on the beach and talked about what the Cape House meant to us and what we wanted to take to our new home in Mexico.

There were lots of ideas, but we’ll summarize them in just a few sentences.
• Our dream house should be large enough and gracious enough so that it would work for not only our entire family, but for each of the four nuclear families. It would have areas grand enough allow us to be together, and smaller enclaves cozy enough to engage in those all-important intimate conversations and moments.
• It would be near the ocean, ideally with a view of the sunset.
• And, finally, it would be open enough to let in the breezes, the sounds of birds, and lots of light -- and closed enough to keep out insects, animals, and the summer heat.
LA CASA QUE CANTA is the expression of that dream. In fact, it far exceeds the original dream.

These are matters to consider if you are serious about renting:
• ITS VERSATILITY: The villa is really three self-contained houses, each with its private entrance, complete kitchen, and everything necessary to serve as your home. The CASA LA CANTA (hereafter referred to simply as the CASA) is large; it has 6000 square feet, three bedrooms, four full baths, a gourmet kitchen, and large circular family room with a 180 degree view of ocean and jungle and a large screen TV; a gracious dining room; a comfortable living room; and terraces with views from almost every room. The NIDO DE LA TORTUGA (hereafter the NIDO) is a 1000 square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath home which is simply charming. Finally, the CASITA CELESTIAL is a 1200 square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath home with its own dipping pool, large screen TV, and a very nice kitchen. Oh, it also has a palapa. (See next VRBO Listing #244997 -- San Pancho's Newest Tropical Paradise with Pool, Palapa...)
Therefore, it is possible to rent two bedrooms (the CASITA), or three bedrooms (the CASA) or five bedrooms (the CASA and the NIDO) or seven bedrooms (the CASA, the NIDO and the CASITA.)
• ITS LOCATION is at the north end of San Pancho’s mile-long beach, in a jungle, a five-minute walk from the beach and twenty-five minute walk and a five-minute drive from the center of our little town.
• ITS VIEWS are breathtaking.
• ITS KITCHENS AND BATHS are state-of-the art…..with lots of Mexican art.
• ITS BEDROOMS all have air conditioning, king-sized beds with new, high quality mattresses…and lots of artifacts from all over Mexico.
• Basically all of the AMENTIES of a luxury home are provided. One most unusual features is the fire-pit, where we invite you (with the assistance of our able staff) to gather and talk about your life, as we used to do regularly at our home on Cape Cod.

There is much more that we could say, but if you are interested in making OUR HOME YOUR HOME for a while, PLEASE send us an email or give us a call and let’s talk so that you can make an informed decision.

Vacation Rental Features

  • Amenities
    • Air Conditioning: There are air conditioning units in all bedrooms (in the entire complex). There is also air conditioning in the kitchen and the family room, a large circular room with TV and 180 degree views of ocean and jungle (not shown on the VRBO website).
    • Washer: In the entire complex there are two washers and two driers, but we ask you to use the laundry services of our staff member Noemy for a small fee. You will not be disappointed when your laundry is returned to you. Indeed, you will be delighted with her work and her presentation! She is really somewhat of an artist in folding clothes.
    • Dryer: As already mentioned, there are two driers in the entire complex.
    • Linens Provided: All beds (except the bunk room beds) are king-sized and will be made up with freshly laundered linens when you arrive. We also provide kitchen and bath towels....and even beach towels.
    • Garage: There is a garage with room for one car on the street level.
    • Covered Parking: It is our intention to have a pergola (rough wood roof) over the garage. This will protect cars from the sun, but not the rain, which only comes in the summer anyway.
    • Off Street Parking: There is plenty of parking on the road
    • Parking for RV/Boat/Trailer: This can be a problem. Best thing is to give us a call and see how we can make it work for you.
    • Wood Fireplace: This is one of the most unusual features of the house -- an outdoor fire pit, which is a perfect place to sit around a fire, roast marshmallows or s'mores, and reflect on the day or life, itself. We ask that you have either Enrique, the foreman of our building crew and now our caretaker, or Abigail and Carlos, our house managers, present if you plan a fire. Especially in the dry season (from Christmas through the spring), the jungle can easily catch fire. (We had one fire on the property during construction.)
  • Beds
    • King Bed (4) : If you rent LA CASA QUE CANTA (with three bedrooms) and EL NIDO DE LA TORTUGA (two bedrooms), you get four king beds and two single beds in the bunk room. If you also rent LA CASITA CELESTIAL you get two more bedrooms with two more king beds. And all of the beds have new mattresses of high quality.
    • Bunk Bed: The bunk bed is a masterpiece. Make sure to see its picture.
    • Convertible Bed: Should you need a place for one more person, we will provide you with a rollaway.
  • Entertainment
    • Cable/Satellite TV (2) : There is one TV in the CASITA now and there will be two by late October (one in the CASITA and one in the family room of LA CASA QUE CANTA). Both TVs are connected to Star Choice, a Canadian satellite television provider that gets programing from four American cities -- Buffalo and Detroit on the East Coast and Seattle and Spokane on the West.
    • DVD
    • Video Library: We are building up a DVD library now, including several with Mexican themes and several for young children
    • CD Player
    • Private Hot Tub: There is a private hot tub on the main pool deck. If you rent the CASA and the NIDO, it is yours to use. If you also rent the CASITA CELESTIAL you also get a dipping pool.
    • Private Pool: The pool is really a family pool. It is a nice size (5 meters by 10 meters -- about 16 feet by 34 feet). It is not deep -- just a meter and a half -- four and a half feet). It is specifically designed to acommodate safely children of all ages. In the pool there is a perfect platform for infants to splash in the water, a bench which seems to delight toddlers, a great jumping off place for older children, and plenty of areas for adults to sit and sip your Margaritas, cervezas, or gin an tonics. The pool has a fine mosaic of turtles and fish done by a local craftsman. It also has a deck for sunning, reading, eating, drinking, etc. etc. As a matter of principle (nuesta casa ES su casa when you rent it) we leave our pool toys including a couple of really sweet floating mats.
  • Kitchen
    • Full Kitchen (2) : EL NIDO has a most pleasant kitchen. It has a marvelous Mexican flair, but the appliances are state of the art (See picture #12). LA CASA has a big kitchen -- really a gourmet kitchen -- with granite counter tops, beautiful wood cabinets and doors, stunning tile work, and excellent stone, refrigerator, dishwasher, two sinks, a microwave, coffee maker, iced drink maker, and a bar. We keep the pantry stocked with staples which you are invited to use. (NUESTRA CASA really is SU CASA!) If you also rent the CASITA CELESTIAL you get a third kitchen, just as nice as the others -- bigger than the NIDO'S but smaller than the CASA'S.
    • Cooking Utensils Provided: Really nice pots and pans, cooking utensils, and cutlery. As an added treat we have several sets of dinnerware -- some are made by Mexican craftsmen and some are just good, solid plates, including some plastic ones which you can't break. Finally, do we have glassware for you -- coffee cups, drinking glasses, wine glasses, margarita glasses, onix tequila glasses. I think you will be pleased with our selection, which is yours to enjoy while our casa is your casa.
    • Refrigerator (2) : There is a very large refrigerator in LA CASA and a smaller one in EL NIDO. As you can probably figure out by now, if you rent LA CASITA CELESTIAL you get a third refrigerator.
    • Dishwasher: Brand new. A Bosch dishwasher in the CASA.
    • Microwave (2) : One in each house. So the correct answer to this implied question is that you get two microwaves if you rent two places, and three places you get three microwaves.
    • Ice Maker
    • Catering Available: We will help you with this.
  • Outdoor Features
    • Gas/Electric BBQ Grill: At present we have just one grill for the CASA and the NIDO. We believe that we will also have a full outside kitchen at poolside by November. There is also a grill for the CASITA. Since we wouldn't want to run out of propane when we are cooking, we keep extra canisters on the property for you. Remember, Nuestra Casa es Su Casa.
    • Deck/Patio (4) : Do we have decks? Yes we have them, four of them (and a fifth if you count the CASITA CELESTIAL). The top deck offers the most azaming view, morning, noon, and night. (Please don't forget the nights -- moon and stars over the ocean -- it's romantic, even if you're a geezer or a gezerette!) The main deck runs from the family room all the way across the south side of the house to the end of the living room. There is a place there to have your meal or your morning coffee. The deck on the bedroom level is actually the largest deck in the complex. Even it, three floors down from the top deck, offers stunning views of the ocean. Now, if you are a child, you must stop reading right now. But if you are a full-grown adult and especially if you are the patriarch and the matriarch, please read on for just a moment. Don't tell your children, but there is a private deck off the master bedroom. Sweeeeet!
    • Balcony: Oh my gosh. How can I tell you anything more. There are balconies everywhere! Furthermore, there are custom made aluminum railings which are both beautiful and very safe.
    • Lanai: There really isn't a lanai, but if you rent the CASITA CELESTIAL you will have a palapa, which is much better than a lanai.
  • View/Location
    • Beach View: The beach view makes the viewing much more interesting than just an ocean view. You will be able to see most of the San Pancho beach and then, beyond that, Sayulita point and Sayulita itself.
    • Ocean View: Oceans from every deck. And we HAVE seen whales.
    • Mountain View: You will be surrounded by hills which are covered with jungle vegetation.
  • Communications
    • Telephone (2)
    • Free Long Distance: Free to all of Mexico. A charge for calling the States or Canada.
    • Computer: There will be a computer in LA CASA QUE CANTA, but most renters bring their own laptops and use our wireless service.
    • WiFi (Wireless Internet)
  • Suitability
    • No Pets Allowed
    • Kid Friendly: You will need to watch your children around the pool. The aluminum railings throughout the house are very child protective.
    • Smoking Not Allowed: Smoking is allowed outside.
  • Activities (on site and nearby)
    • Golf
    • Shopping
    • Sightseeing

Why the Owner Chose San Francisco (San Pancho)

In 2006 two of our sons went on a surfing-scouting trip to the west coast of Mexico, found their way to San Pancho, and immediately fell in love with the town and the beach. A month later we rearranged some travel plans and went to check it out for ourselves. Well, we also just loved the place. The Mexicans were very friendly and also very proud of their charming little town. The Americans and Canadians we met seemed to respect the culture and value their relationships with the folks whose families, in some cases, had lived in San Pancho for over a hundred years. It seemed that this would be an ideal place to build a home for generations of our family.

The Unique Benefits at this Villa

Our home, which has been lovingly constructed by a local builder, a team of twenty-five craftsmen, the insights of three architects, and, very importantly, the artistic sensitivities of Melissa Roberts, is a combination of almost conflicting characteristics.

First, it is utterly open to the world (the jungle and the ocean), BUT almost all of the rooms can be closed off to create more secure, cool, and intimate living spaces.

Second, it has all of the amenties of a very modern home, BUT it still has the charm of old Mexico.

Third, it is located within easy walking distance of both the beach and the town, BUT also is far enough away to avoid some of the noise and the dust and the traffic.

Furthermore, it has three pools and spectacular vistas and some of the most interesting architecture around.

Owner's Map of San Francisco (San Pancho)

A note from Melissa and Bill Roberts (some of which may be a repetition):
Even though you will have four marvelous hosts in our San Pancho staff, we want to take a moment and introduce ourselves to you. We have lived most of our adult life in Middletown, Connecticut, where Melissa was a school social worker and Bill was a clergyman and, more recently, a consultant. In the 1970s we built a home on Cape Cod for our family -- we have three sons. The Cape House was terribly important to our family, but as the boys grew up and moved away and had children of their own, we decided to sell that house and built a three-home complex in San Pancho, which is just perfect for our family and our hosting friends and renters.
