The best of Hawi is located at Hawi Farms, a beautiful 8 acre macadamia nut orchard, near historic Hawai Town.

Stunning natural beauty best describes this northern most point of the Big Island of Hawaii known as the district of of North Kohala.

A place, often missed by tourists (lucky for you), North Kohala is a rural peninsula, rich in the history of old Hawaii, and its unique beginnings. The birthplace of King Kamehameha I, North Kohala, gives you a taste of the Hawaiian Islands you won't find elsewhere.

Hawi town, the center of the sugar plantation community of years gone by, is within walking distance of Hawi Farms. Free from traffic, vog, crowds, and tourist traps, you will find yourself eating ice cream with the locals, and relaxing like never before, when you arrive in Hawi Town.

Your exploration of the area will take you to the works of local artisans, where you will find unique treasures, not found anywhere else. Great food and entertainment is available at your doorstep, in town, with expert chefs and world famous musicians.

From Hawi Town you have access to incredible sightseeing, beaches and tours. The magnificent Pololu Valley is minutes away. A hike down to the black sand beach, for a picnic is a must for most guests. A quiet stroll through nearby Kapau Town, and the many galleries takes a little less energy, and is also a must.

For a night filled with fun, plan on dinner at Kahua Ranch. It is a night filled with story telling, entertainment, music, dancing, and great food at a real working cattle ranch. They also offer horseback riding, wagon rides, and have a petting zoo for the kids. It is 8500 acres of beautiful ranch land, with panoramic views from the rain forest to the Kohala Coast line. You will never forget the dazzling sunsets from the ranch.

A half an hour drive over the mountain road takes you to the Paniolo Country of Waimea/Kamuela, and its famous Parker Ranch, the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the country.

Start your day in Waimea on Saturday morning at the incredible Farmers Market, (buy your fresh local grown produce and gourmet delights to stock your vacation kitchen).

On your way back to Hawi pick up your favorite wine at the Kamuela Wine and Liquor Store, or save your purchases for the next day, and have dinner at the award winning Merriman's Restaurant. Beyond Waimea is the beautiful Hamakua Coast, and more of "old Hawaii".

The rodeo in Honoka'a, the spectacular Waipio Valley, a day at the Volcano and Akaka Falls, a visit to the Vanilla Factory and Farm in Paauilo, and a trip to Hilo Town, home of the famous Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, in April, are all within easy reach from Hawi Town.

Don't miss a thing, it's Hawaii at its very best! No huge, glitzy hotels, loud tour guides, or phony trinkets. This is the real, authentic Hawaii.

Yes, this is the best, perhaps in all of Hawaii. The property itself is steeped in history dating back to the early plantation days of the 1950's. A quiet, secluded Hawaiian home awaits your visit.

Upon your arrival, our manager will meet you and give you all the information you need to make your stay one you will never forget. If you need specialized amenities and assistance with your stay, our manager, will, for a reasonable fee provide concierge service based on your needs.

Aloha, and " E KOMO MAI, NOU KA HALE", which is a traditional Hawaiian greeting welcoming you to, "Come inside, the house is yours."

The Best of Hawi in Spectacular North Kohala

Year Purchased: 1947

Why the Owner Chose Hawi

This property was owned by my husbands father. Doctor Eveleth was the country doctor for the plantation in North Kohala. When Doctor Eveleth died, my husband inherited the property. Doc Eveleth, as he was known to his patients, was the doctor who delivered over 2000 babies in North Kohala, and tended to the aches and pains of the sugar plantation workers. During your stay you will probably meet someone who knows him or was delivered by Doc. The macadamia nuts on the property were a hobby for Doc, and they were planted by him, and his two sons in 1949. We still harvest the nuts and sell to local factories. While not a huge moneymaker, it is really enjoyable for us to know that the macadamia nuts are included in that box of chocolate covered macadamia nuts going home with you.

The Unique Benefits at this Plantation House

If you are looking for a vacation experience that provides relaxation, away from stress and the obligations of your daily life, this is the place for you. An artists dream, a writers inspiration, a place of reflection, Hawi Farms is all these things and more. The birds awake you in the morning, and the large stand of bamboo whispers to you as the sun sets. Cooler than other parts of the island, the light night breezes give you a nights rest you haven't had in years. Our visitors never want to leave, and describe their stay as the best vacation they have ever experienced. We agree with them, and are blessed to have this wonderful home on the beautiful Kohala Coast.

Owner's Map of Hawi

I moved to Hawaii 25 years ago, but my husband is a Kamaaina, and was born in Honolulu, then moved to this property in 1947, when his father, who was the plantation doctor for the sugar company, purchased the land. Since our retirement, we spend time here enjoying the community, and our wonderful farm, just relaxing, and pursuing our hobbies. My husband's art is included at the North Kohala Artists Cooperative Gallery nearby, and I enjoy gardening and working on my first book. My husband graduated from Oregon State, (GO BEAVERS! )with a degree in agriculture. After years of working for the sugar plantation on the north shore of Oahu, his retirement to Hawi gives him time for his true passion, farming his own land. He is an expert on plant life, and is enjoying bringing the orchard and surrounding fruit trees to their full potential. His love of the land, and his passion for this place is evidenced by the flowers in bloom, and trees bearing guava, lemons, limes, lychee, oranges and avocado's's; all yours to pick and enjoy when you are our guests. My architectural, landscape and interior design experience, gained from 30 years as a resort home builder has given me the tools necessary to restore this home to an old Hawaii plantation style farmhouse. We hope you all enjoy it as much as we do, and are looking forward to sharing it with you.

    • What a pure delight this house is! My son and I spent several wonderful days diving and mucking about in and around Hawi, staying in this comfortable, well-furnished and supplied house. And what a setting: gigantic Norfolk pine, banyan trees and bamboo stand about the house. This often-overlooked part of the island is a thriving artist community, with-among other surprises- an outstanding and cosy sushi restaurant (Sushi Rock)serving unique rolls of locally-caught fish. Mahalo, Rita and Barton!

    • We had the HUGE pleasure of staying in this beautiful home last year while celebrating a mini high school reunion. The accomodations were absolutely wonderful - cozy, comfortable, and the open concept of the kitchen leant itself to the enjoyment of celebrating around the "cooks", leaving no one out. This all added up to a totally fun time together. The outside hot tub was a beautiful way to enjoy the lovely, cool evenings. The entertainment in the nearby town provided professional entertainment and a warm ambiance that you don't get in the big city. All in all, I highly recommend this beautiful home to anyone who is looking for a "different" concept of vacation. It lends itself well to both a group of 6 or even a single. I give it a five star rating!!!!
