The house is very private and surrounded by a variety of tropical fruit trees: lychee, rambutan, mangosteen, avocado, mango, breadfruit, jackfruit, durian, coconut, and banana. Relax on your decks and watch the birds in the trees or ships that pass by on the ocean.
This lush orchard hideaway sits behind the tiny hamlet of Wailea on the beautiful Hamakua coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is located approximately 13 miles north of Hilo, 15 miles from the Hilo airport. You can take a short walk or drive to Kolekole Beach Park in one direction and the beautiful Hakalau Bay (swimming and body boarding) in the other direction. A 5 minute drive gets you to the charming little town of Honomu for restaurants and unique shopping. A short distance above Honomu is Akaka Falls State Park with the highest waterfall in the state.
World Botanical Garden is one mile away and Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Garden is five miles away. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a must see at less than an hour away.

My wife Janet and I moved to the Big Island at the end of 1994. We started a small tropical fruit farm in 1997. We completed the rental house on the property in 2007.
Why the Owner Chose Hakalau
Big Island north of Hilo was always my favorite part of Hawaii with all the rivers and its lush green.

The house is secluded at the bottom of a tropical fruit orchard and tucked behind the little town of Wailea. It is walking distance to Kolekole beach park and Hakalau bay. Akaka falls and the small town of Honomu is a short drive.
