Quiet yet close to everything, the Blue Tulip barn sits on a hill overlooking Tenants Harbor's inner cove, a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean and two of Mid-Coast Maine's most picturesque lobster villages. It is the perfect get-away location for tourists, writers, artists, photographers, bikers and nature lovers. Built in 2009, this cozy apartment upstairs in our barn is comfortable (skylights, ceiling fan!), well-equipped and reasonably-priced. Offering gorgeous sunsets and unexpected water views, our 2.4 acre-property has towering spruce trees, backyard pond, herb & vegetable garden, beach chairs, barbecue grill, picnic tables, small porch, private entrance and off-street parking. A community park with ball field and free tennis courts is just across the street. Heat, utilities, cable TV, DVD, phone and Internet service included in all rates. We live in the heart of 'Wyeth Country'--home to the beautiful coastal views, lobster villages, lighthouses, islands and meandering roads and waterways featured in paintings by Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. A perfect getaway location for photographers, artists, writers, hikers, bikers, kayakers and nature lovers. Just 15 miles from great restaurants, shops and galleries in downtown Rockland. 'Must see' things to do include ferry ride to Monhegan Island artist colony and dazzling cliffs, sunsets at Marshall Point Lighthouse (featured in movie Forest Gump), lobster dinners on local wharfs, and shopping in local art galleries and Maine-made craft shops...including our Blue Tulip Garden Boutique!

The Blue Tulip is located about 1 mile past the intersection of Wallston Road and Rt. 131 (Main Street, which becomes Port Clyde Road). Going south toward Port Clyde, turn right onto Barter Hill Road just after you pass the ball field. Our property is on the left. Turn into the second driveway and park next to the barn.

About the owner: Dutch-born Jan (pronounced 'Yon') Limmen and his wife Rosemary (née Bouthot) bought their property at Barter Hill and Port Clyde Roads (Route 131) in 2006 after exploring every Maine peninsula and coastal community from Boothbay to Bar Harbor. 'We were looking for water views, visibility for a home-based business, and a small town sense of community. We found it all in Tenants Harbor.' Mid-Coast Maine's climate reminded Jan of his boyhood village on Holland's North Sea. After working as a landscaper in the busy Baltimore-Washington corridor for over 35 years, he was tired of traffic and long commutes and missed bike rides, sunsets and walks on the beach. For Rosemary, the move from Maryland brought her closer to her French-Canadian father's roots in Fort Kent on Maine's northern border. After 25 years in corporate communications, PR and conference planning, she too longed for a more healthy, stress-free yet creative lifestyle where she could be outdoors and work with her hands. Ready for a change, but not ready to totally retire, the Blue Tulip is the couple's dream come true. In just four years they've rebuilt their cottage, built a barn, started three businesses...including Blue Tulip Lodging and vacation rental apartment...reclaimed overgrown lawns, cleared dead trees and thickets from their 2.4 acres, and opened up views of their pond, Tenants Harbor and the nearby Camden Hills. Jan manages the Blue Tulip's Landscaping Services. Rosemary takes care of Lodging. Together, they share responsibility for selecting merchandise, designing displays, marketing and operating the Blue Tulip Garden Boutique.

Why the Owner Chose Tenants Harbor:
We were looking for a home-based business location with a view of the water and privacy that was visible from a major road so that customers and guests could easily find us. We also wanted to live in a year-round rural community of neighbors and friends that attracted visiting tourists but was not totally dependent on them. Our hilltop location in the lobster village of Tenants Harbor met all these requirements. Being close to Rockland and Camden's art galleries, theatres, shopping centers, movies and medical facilities was also a big plus.
