The Jordan Trail starting at Penney Bridge is a 17 mile trail that follows the headwaters of the river and loops back starting at Dead Man's Hill - a breathtaking vantage point that looks over the entire Valley. Or if not so ambitious just take a lazy float on a raft, kayak or canoe down the river and do a little fishing.

At the cabin cook in or grill out - we have every thing you will need. Or take the short drive to Charlevoix the beautiful and enjoy the beaches of Lake Michigan, the many fine dining options, one of the most gorgeous harbors in the state and activities in the park all summer.

It's fifty miles to Mackinaw and the Bridge and 50 miles to Traverse City for a day trip that offers hundreds of options to enjoy. Golf, Casinos, fine dining at establishments such as the Row Inn, Stafford's, Terry's Place and Murry's are second to none.

After all that come back to the cabin, build a camp fire, sit on the deck and watch the river go by. Retire to solitude and wake in the morning to song birds, wood peckers, ducks and the sounds that a river makes. A cup of coffee and a hearty breakfast and do it all again. That's what river people do. Have fun.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1999

We are three couples who love to fly fish and just enjoy the beauty of a fresh water stream fed by one of the largest watersheds in northern Michigan

Why the Owner Chose East Jordan

We live just 22 minutes from the cabin and can use it all the time. We looked all over the state and in the Upper Peninsula and this was the perfect place. 15 minutes from Charlevoix, short drive to the Row Inn a gourmet food establishment in Ellsworth, great place to eat in town East Jordan at Murry's, Jordan Valley hiking trails are just down the road and 1000's of acres of public land for exploring and enjoying.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Cabin is located only steps from the Jordan River--a spring fed waterway designated the first "wild river" in Michigan. Just down from the canoe take out at Webster Bridge, surrounded by State land and across the river from our cabin down to the next take out and not another cabin. Large deck and a westerly face make evenings on the deck warm and relaxing. Put in up stream with your kayaks and get out at cabin. Fish up or down stream but please practice catch and release. Special rental packages and transportation arrangements available through Jordan Outfitters.

Sweet Deal

My goodness, don't be swayed by the silly review from "Disappointed" in Grand Rapids. We had a wonderful time there the very next week. Yes, there are bats, which is part of the reason to go there...to get away from the city. Yes, spring fed streams are generally cold...hello. What a treat to float a crystal clear, swift water stream right to your cabin & have somebody else haul the canoe. Yes, there are mosquitos...this is in the north woods...just the same in MN, WI, Canada, and the UP. There are no mosquito abatement programs in the wilderness. The great thing about this place is it's not 5 hours from supermarkets, gourmet restaurants, upscale shopping, museums, many lake beaches, daily farmers markets, nightlife, historic sights, Great Lakes swimming & sailing, local fresh fruit, jams & pies at roadside stands, eye popping state & national parks, and a wonderful variety of scenery. All of that within an hours drive, and then retreat to the quiet solitude of a cabin in the woods and a murmuring stream. We looked at modern VRBO condos in town at 3 & 4 times this weekly rate, but those are the same in any city. On 2nd thought, why do I defend this little slice of heaven? Please stay away so we can have it to ourselves as often & as long as we want.

Should have spent an extra $100-150 for a better place

We feel this property and owner did not accurately portray the property in email conversations. We made it clear we were renting this as a relaxing vacation spot but we were disappointed with multiple items. We were told the river could be used for swimming however, the river is spring fed (which was disclosed to us) but it was ice fishing cold and moves so fast there was no way anyone could swim in with without being carried away. The river is also too deep to touch and has a mucky, debris filled bottom. It is also a popular kayaking, tubing spot so even though the traffic was not too bad and yes the passers by were generally friendly, we were told few people traveled on this section of the river. Areas of the cabin needed improvement. Bat's were living in the roof which was fun entertainment at dusk but not fun after we realized how much they pooped on us during our first night of star gazing and they were audible from the top floor bedroom. The tree over the fire pit was not taken care of and had many burnt branches and we were concerned of the fire hazard with our small fire. Finally, this was the buggiest area I have ever been to in my life. The cabin is located in a thickly wooded area that is not cut back and we literally could not sit outside no matter how much DEET we applied to our bodies and we had to run from the car to the indoors because the insects literally dive bomb heads. In the middle of the week smaller insects found a way into the cabin and were swarming in a thick mass. We had to turn off all lights and hide under the sheets. We contacted the owner with our disappointment and our plan to vacate in the morning. When we awoke the table and kitchen had a layer of dead bugs. The owner arrived as we were leaving and was initially apologetic and we explained our disappointment but he never followed up with any partial refund or apology as indicated on the spot. I have been more protected from the elements in old worn out tents than I was in this place. This cabin might be the right place for someone, and their guest book indicated that people were pleased with their stay there, but our experience was so awful we literally walked away from the place and started going door to door at motels in Northern Michigan. It was an awful experience and I never plan to return to this area. There is on outdoor shower in addition to the one inside and even though it is rustic it was the highlight of the property and everyone did enjoy it
