Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2009
We are the Henckel family. We have lived in the area since 1993. We love spending time together as a family. We started raising livestock when our oldest child began 4H at age 8. We now have a small flock of sheep with their guardian llama that pasture on this property as well as miniature donkeys.
Why the Owner Chose Viroqua
Nancy was raised on a small American Plan Resort in NE Wisconsin and is excited to be involved in tourism once again! We bought this piece of property because it is close to our own home and had lots of pasture land for our sheep. It was the perfect house to use as a vacation rental!
The Unique Benefits of this House
This is a beautiful house in a beautiful location! The solitude of country living is at it's best here. There are long country roads to bike or walk down while enjoying the wildlife and farm fields & pastures. The river is peaceful and charming. The house is warm & inviting and a wonderful place to relax whether it is in the hot tub or on the porch or inside visiting with your family/friends.

Our stay at the country farm house on the Bad Axe river was terrific. The house was clean and well-provided for and the setting was spectacular. Would recommend it to anyone wanting a pastoral, scenic and peaceful getaway. Nancy and her son were very gracious and let us bring our children to see the farm animals and collect eggs. A great time for all.

The picture perfect place...wonderful time and we going back definetly. Our kids (28 and 9 years)had blast sleding, barn was something they enjoyed a lot.House was spottless clean, all the little thing you need in kitchen (mixer, bowls, towels etc).We rent a lot of times but this one is something I can not stop talking about.Gregg was very helpfull with our car problem (our battery died and car was locked),and the kids answered all our questions about farm, animals and land. Only bad thing is we have to wait for next summer 2012 to visit it for whole week, but there is few weekends left and we hope for them

We had an amazing time in Scenic Valley. It was the perfect weekend getaway from Chicago - about a 5 hour drive. We really enjoyed sledding down all the hills, using the hot tub and cooking homemade meals (in the very well equiped kitchen!) Cell phones do not work in the home, so be sure to bring a calling card if you need to make phone calls. Overall, we had a fabulous time and definitely plan on returning in the future!

We had a wonderful 2-night stay at this beautiful country farmhouse. It was exactly as described & pictured & VERY clean. This place was the perfect mix of modern amenities (for me the city girl) & country (for my husband who grew up in a small town). Our dogs loved running freely, sniffing all the smells, playing with the friendly kitties, checking out the river & marveling at the other farm animals--they did not want to leave. We loved the cozy house, bridge, river, fire pit, modern kitchen, yummy cookies, farm fresh eggs, hot tub, grill etc. My favorite part was getting to interact with & give treats to the sheep & miniature donkeys. The lack of Internet & cell access is a true gift--I loved telling my office this! The owner, Nancy Henkel was so welcoming, responded to our initial inquiry quickly & addressed any questions we had immediately. Plus she left us cookies and farm fresh eggs. A+++ for property owner/customer relations. We will definitely be back soon--I can easily see us visiting several times each year. A few pieces of advice: (1) This house is very well- equipped-you don't need to pack all sorts of extras (they supplied soap, shampoo, conditioner, foil, plastic wrap, paper towels, bikes, wood for fire pit, flashlights, garbage bags, every kitchen item you might need, games, books, etc). I over packed, as many rentals are not nearly as well-equipped. (2) This place is secluded; you can really get away from everything. We brought most of our food & made our meals at the house. A little note, for city people like me, there is no grocery or gas station a mile or two away if you forget a stick of butter--grocery stores were about a 20-25 minute drive one-way (Viroqua). So plan ahead when you pack or go to the market. Overall, we could not be more pleased (well maybe if we stayed longer) & highly recommend the Henckel's rental.

I had guests from Boston to Colorado, ages 3 months to 73 years, and we all loved our relaxing stay! With so much to look at and do, there was no need to leave the farmhouse or property. The animals in the pasture are so fun to watch and the trout stream is a great place to go with a special book and a fishing pole. The farmhouse is roomy and we made some special meals in the beautiful kitchen. My only regret was having to leave to go back to the city! We miss Suede the llama and Connie the donkey who became family favorites, as well as the inviting hot tub.!

Our family so enjoyed our stay at Purdy Valley! The Home is even more beautiful than the photos and the Master Bedroom is huge. We would highly recommend this country getaway. The kitchen is a joy to cook in, all the dishes and gadgets you will need are provided. The farm fresh eggs and homemade cookies made for such a nice welcome. Everything on the property was well kept and towels/linens very nice. We enjoyed the well marked hiking trails at the rear of the property near the river and had fun interacting with the sheep and donkeys in the pastures. Coffee in the morning on the front porch overlooking the sheep and watching the birds at the feeder was such an enjoyable way to start the day. Lazy afternoons reading in the hammock and relaxing in the hot tub. Large grassy front yard perfect for the lawn games we brought along. Nice grill on the deck for cookouts. We ended the day around the fire under star filled skies. One afternoon we drove into Ontario to canoe on the Kickapoo River great easy trip down the river with spectacular scenery. Nice not to have cellphone coverage helped us feel like we were really getting away from it all.

We just got back from staying at this wonderful home. We had an incredible time and wanted to stay longer. It is nice to know in the future when we visit family in Viroqua, we will always have a place to rent. Having the farm animals on the property was so much fun. Roasting marshmallows at night and fishing during the day. No need to go anywhere else when you are staying here. Will recommend it to all of our friends and family. Can't say enough about this rental - fantastic!

I would recommend this farmhouse to anyone, especially if you're looking for a little peace and relaxation, or if you're interested in outdoor recreation. The area is surrounded by hills and valleys and plenty of wildlife. It's a beautiful part of the state. We stayed with our two young kids and two dogs. The farmhouse is in the middle of nowhere, so our dogs were able to run around like puppies again. Our kids loved the walking trails, and we all got plenty of fresh air. Cooking in the kitchen didn't feel like a chore. The house is immaculate and tastefully decorated. I didn't think the hot tub on the deck would matter much to me, but I was in it at least twice a day. It was so relaxing! The washer and dryer in the entryway off the deck made laundry very easy, especially for wet swimming suits/towels. We were all very sad to have to leave, but we will be back in the near future.

The house was beautiful and very comfortable. The master suite was heavenly. Being there for a week, I especially loved the great, fully stocked kitchen. The appliances were wonderful and there were no tools I needed that were not provided in some drawer or cupboard. I loved watching the sheep and Llamas. It was lots of fun, but I believe they were glad to see my dog go! It was remote enough to feel like I was getting away but not a terrible drive to civilization. I appreciated no phone (cell), TV and such as it was a wonderful break. I did listen to quite a bit of public radio, and it wasn't too far in the car before I could pick up a cell tower. It was a beautiful and peaceful ride to Viterbo campus about 30-40 minutes. For an urban commuter, the drive was a huge difference - no traffic and gorgeous views.
