Countless people describe this as their favorite house on Lake Burton. They say it is the perfect house, on the perfect lot, with a perfect view. It has been featured in Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles magazine and was on the Lake Burton Tour of Homes. The design of the house is open, warm and inviting. One of its many distinctive characteristics is the wide variety of options it provides for relaxing and dining. The house sits on a point with breathtaking views of the main part of the lake, but because it is at the end of a private road and off the beaten path, it offers cherished privacy. The 1.7-acre flat lot has over 400 feet of lakefront.

The rising entry on the lakeside fills the house with light and makes for a dramatic introduction. The two screened porches are stepped down toward the lake, opening onto a large stone terrace that is the activity center of the site. The “hammock porch” is everyone’s pick for a quiet snooze, while the main porch is a natural draw for reading, socializing and dining. The primary area of the first floor combines living room, dining area and kitchen in one large, open space… perfect for casual entertaining. The gourmet kitchen area is anchored by a large island, around which guests love to gather, trade stories over a glass of wine and see what’s cooking! Work by local artisans and furniture makers can be seen throughout the house.

The master bedroom suite was built on the foundation of the original cabin and features a morning deck, stacked stone fireplace, large jetted tub and steam shower. A billiard room anchors the house on the opposite end. Two guestrooms with queen-sized beds and a large laundry/utility room complete the first floor.

A sleeping loft with walk-in closet and full bath has a comfortable double bed futon and it’s own lounging nook. The loft, as well as the observation tower above, provide private places to view the beauty of Lake Burton, the North Georgia mountains and the world. The house also has a fold up cot, inflatable twin beds and a Pack ‘n Play portable crib for extra guests.

The boat dock features a gazebo with Adirondack chairs and stairs for the swimmers in the group. There is a second swimming and play area with a sloped entry by the boathouse, which is ideal for young children needing to swim in a protected beach type environment rather than in deep water.

Boats are available for rent at the nearby marina, or you can bring your own. A canoe is available for guest use, along with a few fishing rods to catch “the big one”. The lake has an abundant supply of bass, trout and catfish, and one of the best fishing spots on the lake is right in front of the house.

The two-car garage is attached by a covered walkway, and additional space is available for guest parking. Both a gas grill and charcoal grill are available for guest use, as well as two mountain bikes.

The house is equipped with WiFi and a modern entertainment system that provides music throughout the house and includes HDTV, TIVO and Blueray DVD. There is a copious selection of books, DVDs, games and toys from which to choose. The house has central heat and air conditioning, but most people prefer the fresh mountain air.

Well-behaved pets and children are very welcomed!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1991

RON SCHARBO - Ron has been visiting Lake Burton for over twenty-five years. For many years, he conducted “the search for the perfect lot.” He found his perfect lot in 1990 and built his dream home there the following year. A devoted fan of renowned architect, Robert Stern, Ron wanted the design to reflect Stern’s style. He describes it as a New England costal cottage with a contemporary twist. Ron was also adamant that the house, boathouse and dock fit well on the site. Ron has an advertising and marketing agency in Atlanta. You will see his creative touches throughout the house, especially his photography. He also loves to travel and to cook. Ron’s primary residence is in Atlanta, but he cherish his frequent “escapes” to Lake Burton. It is possible that his Jack Russells enjoy the visits even more! Some of his best memories of the lake are those spent with the growing family. In fact, Ron says that the house had “its finest hour” when the family gathered there for the wedding of his daughter, Dana. “Every time I look toward the gazebo, I see Dana and Josh exchanging their vows.”

Why the Owner Chose Lake Burton

Lake Burton is magical. The boathouses are like nothing else I have seen in the South. You can get away from the urban intensity and be in a different world in just two hours. There is a wide variety of things to do, or you can just relax. Every time we leave Lake Burton, we can't wait to get back, any season of the year.

The Unique Benefits of this House

This is a very unique lot, much larger than most, private and flat. You can walk from the terrace right down to the lakefront without having to go down a long flight of stairs. The size of the lot and design of the house offer many options for group activities or to get away on your own for a little while.

I have had the opportunity to stay at a variety of lake homes around the country but I can honestly say that this is one of the nicest. The home itself is unbelievably comfortable and has all of the accoutrements necessary for an upscale getaway. The screened in porch made the evenings enjoyable and the view of the lake from the patio is fabulous. For anyone looking to getaway to fish, swim, read and relax, this is the perfect home.

I had a chance to stay at this incredible house this past spring and it was one of the best cottage/lake experiences of my life. The house is immaculately presented, with a stunning kitchen/living area opening to a comfortable screened in deck and patio. It is also one of the best spots on the entire lake; sitting on a kind of peninsula that gives you an amazing panormic view of the lake. Unbelievable! I highly recommend this property! Thanks again, William Corkery Chicago, IL

This place is like vision from a movie set or a high end catalogue. The house is open and welcoming with the kind of living space that makes everyone feel at ease, rested and relaxed. It sits on one of the best spots on the lake, jutting out towards the water and giving a serene sense of privacy. Any spot on Lake Burton is going to be great. But to experience it in a place like this with the boathouse, the dock, the expansive and unobstructed view, the vast lakefront, the open living space, and the comfort and luxury of the house… I don’t know how you get a better Georgia getaway than this.

The Lake House is beautiful and a fantastic place to stay, whether you're doing a weekend getaway or a much longer vacation. Every creature comfort you could want is there and it is extremely spacious. The views of the lake are spectacular, as are the screened-in porch and stone patio. You're right on the water, whether you want to boat or fish, and you can cook in a modern kitchen, watch anything you want via satellite TV or shoot a game of pool. It's an understatement to say this place has it all. We'll be back!

I have been lucky enough to stay at this home a couple of times, and to me it is the ideal lake house, cozy yet expansive, well equipped yet not over-the-top. My favorite room is the screen in porch where you literally feel like you are on the water

My wife and I have many fond memories of Lake House on Lake Burton. First the surrounding views are spectacular, with wildlife, quite and sunrises and sunsets that are as close to perfect as one can get. The house is divine, views from every room, space to be alone to read, a joyful kitchen where many great Italian meals have been cooked with family and friends and a dining room that seems to be on the lake, a deck for conversation, sunning and a good read of the NY Times and all the special entertainment features for a rainy day, which doesn't come often. Ideal for those who want to spend time in the water or hiking, the Lake Burton house is a dream come true for a special weekend or a family gathering. We can't wait to come back!

As pretty as the photos are on this site, the actual house & setting are even more stunning. Our weekend was amazing -- spent most of our time on the cozy screened porch. You're surrounded by interesting art & photography, with all the comforts of home (more comforts than OUR real home) We've stayed on Lake Burton before, but this house is atypical in that you don't have to trek down a mountain to get to the water...a very unique flat lot. This place will spoil you rotten!
